Hi, currently Isolating..one more day to do. Aibu to cook 1 day out of date chicken well and make a curry or bin it and starve. Well not starve 🙈. Will I get food poising?

If it smells OK, I would definitely eat it

Strawberriesandcream21 · 06/07/2021 09:45

If it smells okay eat it. I've eaten chicken 3 days out of date before, 3 days is my max on chicken. Just cook it well and you'll be fine

SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/07/2021 09:45

If it was off you’d know about it, it would be slimy and stink the place out.

Most use by dates are very cautious.

MatildaTheCat · 06/07/2021 09:46

We did yesterday and I did give it a good sniff. It was delicious 🤤

Paddingtonitspaddingtonbear · 06/07/2021 09:47

I wouldn't. 🙈

WorraLiberty · 06/07/2021 09:48

Use your nose and your eyes.

If it's gone off, it'll certainly let you know about it.

greensnail · 06/07/2021 09:50

If it smells ok and your sense of smell is ok then go for it. I accidentally cooked chicken that had gone off when I had no sense of smell after having covid (luckily my taste had come back and I realised as soon as I tried to eat it) so I would probably sniff a few things to make sure my nose was working first if I were you.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/07/2021 09:53

@greensnail OP says she’s isolating, not that she has covid.

GroggyLegs · 06/07/2021 09:56

If you haven't opened the pack & cook thoroughly it should be fine.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 06/07/2021 09:57

I would eat it, if it looked and smelled okay

Movinghouseatlast · 06/07/2021 09:59

I would eat it as long as it looked and smelled OK. These dates are always very conservative anyway.

Make sure it is cooked right through and is hot.

LindaEllen · 06/07/2021 09:59

It'll be fine. Just make sure it looks/smells okay and that it's cooked thoroughly (like you should with all meat!)

It doesn't automatically become poisonous at midnight on the date on the packet.

ShowOfHands · 06/07/2021 10:01

My mate is a microbiologist and says the "if it looks and smells okay" test is a nonsense really because it only works for v obviously spoiled food. Hence why food poisoning still happens. She says chicken can look, smell and taste fine and still make you very ill.

A day out of date and probably you'll be fine. Would I risk it? Not a chance. But I'm a vegetarian so the wrong person to ask.

greensnail · 06/07/2021 10:02

@SmidgenofaPigeon I know she's isolating. Presumably because she's a contact of someone who has tested positive and therefore there's a small chance she might develop covid herself and lose her sense of smell. No harm in sniffing a few things to make sure before you rely on your nose working properly in those circumstances.

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 10:14

I agree, test your nose on some things and then give it a sniff. If it’s been stored properly it should be fine - it doesn’t magically go off at the stroke of midnight.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/07/2021 10:18

A day is absolutely fine

OkSpiritualknot · 06/07/2021 10:18

I'd bin it without even opening it. I've has food poisoning once from okay smelling/tasting chicken... Wouldn't risk it again...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/07/2021 10:19

Clicked too early. As long as it looks fine.

Dates are mainly so you can't sue them😁
Apparently red meat has way too conservative dates and it leads to massive waste

chickenyhead · 06/07/2021 10:20

You will definitely know if it has turned.

Backhills · 06/07/2021 10:21

The dates are very cautious, if it was OK at midnight, it's going to be Ok now

Notaroadrunner · 06/07/2021 10:23

I wouldn't even open it. I've found even chicken in date goes off so quickly, there's no way I'd risk eating it out of date.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/07/2021 10:24

Meat never gets wasted here even if it’s on the turn- the fox eats it. Hate wasting stuff over being too conservative about dates though!

Dixiechickonhols · 06/07/2021 10:30

Sniff it if it’s ok I’d eat it. It doesn’t automatically go off at midnight day before.

bellalou1234 · 06/07/2021 10:34

Thanks everyone.. I am going to eat it

When I was newly married the first time I didn't follow the instructions given by my butcher Grandad and on Christmas Eve the turkey smelled really bad. I went to Grandad in floods of tears and he came round and basically bathed the turkey (no bubble bath or soap!) and when he'd finished it didn't smell at all. If you're going to eat it, I would wash it thoroughly first, even though the advice is not to wash chicken now.
