Just been bitten by a mouse the cat brought in

I foolishly picked the mouse up just to get it out and it bit my finger. It has draw blood but has stopped hurting. What should I do? Ring 111? Just keep an eye on it? Will I need a tetanus jab? I know I sound thick but I'm in a panic here and the cat couldn't give a shit. Any advice?

Have you had a tetanus jab before? I'd wash it out with antiseptic and leave it open and keep it clean and keep an eye on it. If you're still worried give the GP a ring in the morning. Hope you're OK and the cat didn't get a telling off

I have put antispetic on it and there's no swelling (yet)

Give it a really good scrub with soap and warm water. Not just a quick hand wash, but for at least a good few minutes.

I believe that tetanus shots aren't as liberally given out as they used to be.

I’ve been in your position. I went to the walk in centre and they have me a tetanus booster. 111 will tell you if you need to go tonight, although i see the guidance says that if you can’t remember when you had your last tetanus booster shot or it’s been over 10 years, you should see your doctor for a tetanus booster. When necessary, you should get the shot within 48 hours after your injury.

Make the bite bleed clean it antiseptic on it and a tetanus injection (personally I'd wait till the docs open tomorrow for the jab)

I would imagine it comes under the “very minor” category - so clean, apply pressure to stop bleeding and plaster / bandage.

If you want to make a massive deal out of it go to a&e / walk in 🤷‍♀️

DS hamster bit me - my fault entirely as I hadn't washed my hands properly and i smelled of lovely lemon cake. Rang GP, Receptionist couldn't stop laughing (until the nurse told her hamster bites were incredibly painful). They checked my records and I was up to date with tetanus and didn't need anything

This happened to my daughter last summer. We rang 111 who said to go to urgent care for a tetanus. There was some sniggering when we got there as even though it drew blood the cut was minute 😂 they did give her a tetanus jab though!

Nhs guidance says seek immediate medical advice. You might need antibiotics and tests for other nasties. Id ring 111

And I'm shit scared of mice/rats and am horrified at what has happened to you. I definitely would not have approached the mouse. I'd be fuming with the cat. Surely their job is to get rid of mice, not bring them in the house, ffs

Thanks all. I know I should have gone straight to the NHS site. I have scrubbed the wound and covered it as suggested by their website and will ring the GP tomorrow. It's actually my birthday today so maybe my fecker of a cat was bringing me a present

Why would that matter? Rodents broadly all carry the same diseases.

I have bitten by a mouse twice. I was at the work the first time and had to go to Occupational Health where I was given a tetanus jab. Everyone thought it was very funny but I was the only person prepared to pick the mouse up (it was on someone's keyboard), and put it outside.

Second time was at home, I was rescuing a live mouse my cat had brought in; I washed where it had bitten me, applied antiseptic and it was fine. Mouse bites are very tiny.

I'm not scared of mice at all which is just as well as it escaped and ran up my back so I had to get it off my shoulder which is when it bit me.
