PumpkinKlNG · 05/07/2021 11:12

I feel really upset, Im 32 and have started going grey already ☹️ I have loads of grey hair and I mean loads. Surely this is really early to be going grey? And no I’m not ready to “embrace it” aibu to feel upset.

Doesn’t help that my hair is dark brown / black so very noticeable

I started to go grey in my 20s, started with a small patch & just spread from there. I've had years of enjoyment trying different colours on my hair to see which suits me/my job at the time/the mood I'm in. Highlights, solid colour, full colour with highlights, lighter or darker.

OK it costs a bit more, but if you find a decent quality colour that suits you it's only a fiver every 4-6 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows.

ThePearlOfDumbarton · 05/07/2021 11:22

Don't blame you. You're too young to embrace it.
I'm 51 and I'm not embracing it til I'm in my 60s.
I don't want to be like George Constanza's mother! But ... I need colour.

My advice is to go quite a walnut shade of brown, my hair was conker but a walnut shade of brown is fairer and blends better.

PurBal · 05/07/2021 11:24

It's normal. Most people I know went grey in their twenties. But I know at least one person who was 17, and a male friend went utterly bald at 21.

PumpkinKlNG · 05/07/2021 11:24

The trouble is I should have added that I’m allergic to hair dye I’m not sure exactly what but I get an awful reaction when I use to dye my hair in my 20s I’ve been in hospital as well because of it so really didn’t think I would have to be dying it already for the next 20/30 years! My mums in her 60s and still dyes hers. Feeling very self conscious of it though ☹️

I feel you, I’m 34 and getting greyer by the day, started as the odd strand I could pull out now it’s everywhere! I think it may be stress related as a year ago I had about 2 greys

ThePearlOfDumbarton · 05/07/2021 11:26

I get it done professionally, that was just to show the shade.

ThePearlOfDumbarton · 05/07/2021 11:28

oh no! Just read that you're allergic. Yeh I got a chemical burn from doing it myself once. Never again.

Have not had any problems from going to a salon.

RealMermaid · 05/07/2021 11:29

If you're allergic to normal commercial dyes you could look at using henna which doesn't have any of the harsh chemicals - obviously do a patch test first but it's very effective and long lasting.

PumpkinKlNG · 05/07/2021 11:30

Thank you I will look at henna, feel so down was only in my 20s 3 years ago 😢 I think it’s probably stress for me as well

Me too but I think quite a few people this sort of age are starting to get greys. A lot dye over it. I cant be bothered ill just accept going grey!

Rapskallion · 05/07/2021 11:51

I started going grey in my late 20s. Also a brunette. I’ve always dyed it at home, using semi permanent box dye at first, moving to permanent colour when I got too many stubborn greys to cover with semi-perm, and gradually going a bit lighter now I’m in my forties (more chestnut brown than black/brown these days).

I also use the brown root touch up dye in between full head dyes to zap my greys.

I’m interested in henna, too, but maybe for the future. My hair is still long and it sounds a faff. Maybe when I eventually chop the length off I’ll give it a go.

PattyPan · 05/07/2021 11:57

DP has white/grey hairs in his otherwise ginger beard and he’s 25 Smile

Essentialironingwater · 05/07/2021 12:21

My husband has started going grey at 30. I still think he looks sexy as hell. We need to change beauty standards - how come men can get away with it and women can't?!

When you daily allergic to hair dye, was that at home stuff or salon? There may be alternatives you can use that a professional can advise on?

laurasecord · 05/07/2021 12:44

My DH was fully salt and pepper by the age of 25. He's more salt now as we approach 40. I think it's lovely on him but I know it's different for men. I spotted two greys on my 18 year old son while cutting his hair, so I think he may be headed for his dads look too lol 😆
I have a FB friend who is embracing her grey at 30 and it looks dreadful, she looks so old. Hair dye is your new best pal.

PumpkinKlNG · 05/07/2021 13:15

Yes that’s the thing its ageing and I’m sorry I’m just not that much of a confident person to pull it off!

Im 31 and found my first smattering of greys last week!!

Im also dark brunette and my hair is quite resillient so I knew I had a box dye in the cupboard somewhere bunged it on.

If your allergic could you try a demi perminent? Rusk shades from sallys are great no ammonia?

Screamingcowboy99 · 05/07/2021 13:21

Time to start looking at wig then OP?

I went grey in my 20s. I'm not quite ready to embrace it yet in my 40s. So I'm clinging onto my black box dye.

In all seriousness, have you tried semi permanent dyes? Some have different ingredients you might not be allergic to? Speak to a hairdresser perhaps for some advice because salon products do have different ingredients too.

Comedycook · 05/07/2021 13:22

I'm 39 and getting lots of greys. I'm not embracing it. I'm dyeing it today. Grey hair will not look good on me...I'll look like a witch

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 05/07/2021 13:25

I started going grey at 28 and couldn't care less. I'm 46 and I wish all of my hair was beautiful silvery grey because I love that look (but I ain't dyeing my hair!).

YANBU to feel how you feel.

ShortColdandGrey · 05/07/2021 13:37

I got my first grey hair at 12 years old so have had a lot of time to get used to it, but I am still dyeing my hair. One day I will just embrace it but not yet.

Do try henna OP.

I have very dark brown/black hair and am also going grey.

The henna gives me lovely red highlights throughout my hair and also leaves my hair in good condition. I love it and its far more natural looking and cheaper than constantly dying the roots.

I started last April and henna it around 4 times a year. This just about keeps on top of the grey, although I do have to pluck out any strays along my parting.

PumpkinKlNG · 05/07/2021 14:02

I read a few reviews for the henna hair dye and quite a few are saying they didn’t cover the greys 😢

Most people I know went grey in their twenties.

Seriously? I really don't think it's the norm. At all.
