Scared

Does anyone else have children who are scared of just about everything?

I feel like my kids are missing out on their childhood because they are scared to do anything.

We plan adventurous trips and holidays, all for the kids, however getting them to do any activity that's more that soft play is hard going.

It's so frustrating, and I don't take it well when they start crying because they are scared to do the activity.

I was like this. I didn't like getting wet, didn't like loud places, didn't like things with lots of other kids, didn't like heights.

Was then diagnosed with sensory processing disorder as a teen.

What age are your children?

BarbarianMum · 04/07/2021 21:21

How old and what sorts of things? And if you encourage make them have go, do they tend to then enjoy whatever it is.

I forced my kids to try a number of things when they were little as I knew they would enjoy them once they got over their cold feet. But they are not fundamentally thrill seekers and I respect that.

Everyone is an individual and if they don't like it, don't pressure them to do it!
I went through a period of life where I was a complete adrenaline junkie, risk- taking and doing dangerous sports. Now I'm scared of lots of things.
Cautious children won't necessarily turn into cautious adults, and if they do, that's fine anyway.

I was the same as a child. My DCs are all somewhere in between.

Not try anything daredevils but not as scared of everything as I was.

My son just turned 9 my daughter is 5. The frustrating thing is know if they tried they would enjoy the activities. For example if we go to holiday parks with a swimming pool that has a slide, my son will cry and be anxious about going on the slide, but when I push him to try it, he enjoys it and then spend the rest of the time going on the slide.

I remember holding dd over a sandpit so she could dig without having to touch the sand.

Today she is 11 and cycled down a hill at 58 kph.

Ah so just like my sons then. Water slides are what I was thinking about when I wrote my post 😁. Just keep pushing them.

My two are teens now and are still cautious by nature but happy to give most things a go unless they involve heights.
