To wonder how people afford prescription charges?

I live alone and work full time but money is tight for now.

I have been on antidepressants for a couple of years so was costing me the £10 a month charge.

Recently my gp has bit me on blood pressure tablets and vitamin b12 as well

I've left it to get the prescription because I simply can't afford £30 a month .

I need the meds , but just can't afford them . Is there any alternative to paying £30 a month ?

Get a prepayment certificate. I can't remember how much they are, but I'm sure it's less than you're paying now.

HermioneGrunger · 04/07/2021 18:00

Get a prepayment certificate, that's how most people afford multiple prescriptions a month.

PinkBuffalo · 04/07/2021 18:01

When I needed a lot a couple of years ago I got a prepayment certificate like pp said. Cos I agree it so expensive! It helped a lot so I would recommend it

Royalbloo · 04/07/2021 18:01

Here's some info:

Save money on NHS prescriptions by prepaying for them.

You can pay a set price for prescriptions for 3 or 12 months, no matter how many you need.

A prescription costs £9.35 per item, but prepaying for an unlimited number of prescriptions is:

£30.25 for 3 months
£108.10 for 12 months (or 10 Direct Debit instalments of £10.81

Sowingbees · 04/07/2021 18:01

Agree pre payment, once you have three or more. And every day I thank my lucky stars we only have to pay prescription charges. Also you should be able to get a three month script.

delilabell · 04/07/2021 18:02

Was deffo going to say pre payment. You can do.it.yearly or quarterly. Wait until.your next prescription before you buy it.

SoddingWeddings · 04/07/2021 18:02

I buy a prepayment certificate at £10.85/month. You no longer get a hard copy, you just need to keep the email. I get 2-6 prescriptions per month, and it's Alison covered me for dental prescriptions and acute prescriptions (antibiotics etc). Worth every penny.

But it only helps some, not all. Here is the link:

SoddingWeddings · 04/07/2021 18:02

@delilabell you can pay monthly now as well.

AfternoonToffee · 04/07/2021 18:02

I asked to have my anti-d prescription for two months, so that at least reduces it a little.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 04/07/2021 18:03

Yes prepayment cert.its about £30 for 3 months or just over £100 for a year so well worth it if you need 3 prescriptions a month.

Check your entitlement to benefits etc as people on low incomes usually get charges waived.

Marguerite2000 · 04/07/2021 18:03

It's £10.59/month. There's a link on this page

fuckedandbombed · 04/07/2021 18:03

Thanks

I asked to get more than one months ad but they won't do it at my gps . It's got to be monthly .

ellieeeee · 04/07/2021 18:13

I get 2 months worth of prescriptions at a time off my gp after having a conversation with my doctor about the cost, I only have to pay for one prescription but it lasts for 2 months, it's worth a try

SciFiScream · 04/07/2021 18:16

If you were spending around £10 per month then the 12 month direct debit pre payment option is a no brainer. You only pay it for 10 months of the year.

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 04/07/2021 18:19

Nhs a pre payment certificate. £10.40 per month by DD. You can have any number of prescriptions in the month and not have to pay for them. They will send you a paper copy of your certificate. They used to send out plastic cards with all the info on. So I photocopy the sheet and cut out the box with the info on it and keep that in my purse to show the Pharmacy!

Jangle33 · 04/07/2021 18:20

Can’t you just get B12 Over the counter cheaper? And if you are on benefits etc it’s free, so I’m afraid you must be deemed to earn too much.

Poppynit · 04/07/2021 18:20

Pre-payment certificate (the monthly direct debit option)! Great for those who have three or more regular monthly items, but also covers any acute items.

Last year I was so grateful for my PPC. I had two weeks until payday but within those two weeks I ended up needing my regular monthly prescription (two items), a course of antibiotics, two creams for my eczema, and two inhalers. All of those items would've cost me around £64 without my PPC!

Depending on your circumstances, you could also look into the NHS Low Income Scheme www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/help-with-health-costs/nhs-low-income-scheme-lis/ xxx

MouldyPotato · 04/07/2021 18:22

Prepayment certificate but do the maths first and only start it before your next one is due.

Get pregnant and you get a years worth free.

longtompot · 04/07/2021 18:22

My dds have HC2 certificates. I wonder if you are eligible for one? You need a HC1 from the pharmacy. My dh has prepayment which saves him a huge amount over the year. They also all get their meds from Pharmacy2U, but I don't know if that is cheaper than getting from your pharmacy.

Thebig3 · 04/07/2021 18:23

Check you're not entitled to free prescriptions etc first. If not prepayment is the best way, I have minimum 4 prescriptions a month so I do the prepayment way.

HunterAngel · 04/07/2021 18:23

Be careful if you’re on universal credit, you don’t automatically get free prescriptions. It’s based on how much you earned in the previous assessment period. Read carefully and be sure you qualify. It’s a £100 fine if you tick exempt when you’re not

Merryoldgoat · 04/07/2021 18:25

A prepayment certificate is £10 a month do as many prescriptions you need.

I have 4 prescriptions monthly (well they issue two months’ at a time now) and it’s all covered.

swapsicles · 04/07/2021 18:26

You can backdate a prepayment certificate but not for long, it might just cover the last ones you had if it was very recently, worth looking into,
