To say you're all wrong about Aldi?

Just that really, I've nipped into Aldi in the past for the odd loaf and picked up a few bits. DP and I discussed and decided to do the 'big' shop there last week.

It's been a disaster, to start with I couldn't find fruit or veg with more than a couple of days shelf life on them and everything I've substituted so far has been either underwhelming or disgusting (1/4 pounders filled with gristle) 🤮 with a couple of exceptions (salmon Wellington, sliced ham) the bread was mouldy the next day and still had 2 days on the use by. The nappies are just awful.

I spent £219 on Friday last week and I've since been out and spent another 150 and will likely need more before the next "big shop" on Friday.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Is it even possible to spend £219 in Aldi?!

I honestly never have a bother with Aldi stuff. I dont even check the dates on fruit and veg - but I go more than once a week and it all gets eaten so never really needed it to last too long.

Burger gristle sounds vom.

Where do you usually shop?

Not without raiding the middle aisles, surely? 😂 I will say that I don't think I could do every shop at Lidl/Aldi but they work fine for us for every other week alternating with an online shop at a bigger supermarket. I think the baby stuff is one of the best things they sell tbh.
switswoo81 · 04/07/2021 17:42

Not on a low income and do all my shopping in Aldi. Fruit and veg is perfect, most of the meat is local (I'm in Ireland) . I know a farmer who produces eggs for Aldi and there standards are extremely high.
Tesco would cost multiples of the amount I spend in Aldi and it's an absolute rip off for lower quality.

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/07/2021 17:42

I have a £50 budget so Aldi it is. I buy staples there but meat from butchers and veg from the farm shop.

borntobequiet · 04/07/2021 17:42

I’ve never had poor quality or less than fresh meat, veg or fish from Aldi, and I visit three branches on rotation, depending on what I’m doing. Everything else is fine and I’d be happy to do all my shopping there, though I also visit Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda, again depending on where I am or what I’m doing. I’m quite baffled by the idea of whole trolleyfuls of horrible gone off items but suppose it can happen sometime/somewhere.

Camomila · 04/07/2021 17:43

Maybe it's just your Aldi. I can happily do a whole big shop at Aldi, apart from toiletries but that's because we all have allergies.

I don't really buy meat when its my turn to do the foodshop though.

Katyy · 04/07/2021 17:43

Oh at last somebody agrees with me 🤣 it’s my closest supermarket but I just can’t get on with it all. If I find something I like, the next time I try it I’ve gone off it .I’ve tried lots of things now, the only things I don’t mind are the cleaning stuff and their diffusers for the bathrooms.

Rabbitheadlights · 04/07/2021 17:43

I usually shop at Asda and or Tesco I'm definitely not having a pop at anyone who can't afford to shop anywhere else. I am genuinely shocked I've seen so many posts raving about the place and it just totally jars with my experience.

I find Aldi fruit and veg very hit and miss.
Chicken, if I'm not using it bt the next day I freeze it or it goes off ime.

Mrstamborineman · 04/07/2021 17:44

Once overheard blatant conversation by two cashiers “it’s so busy still, where are they even getting their money I though people were furloughed.

peboh · 04/07/2021 17:44

I've never been a huge fan of Aldi personally. I don't find them that much cheaper than other supermarkets, and their fresh is usually really poor (from my own experience). I do enjoy the middle aisles though 😅

ThatOtherPoster · 04/07/2021 17:45

I shop at Aldi all the time and I love it. My favourite shop is Waitrose, so I go there for certain things. But I get 95% of my shopping from Aldi and it’s fine.

I wouldn’t buy readymade burgers though. They’re so easy and quick to make that I make them

HighHighHopes · 04/07/2021 17:45

I agree OP. My two sisters are die hard Aldi fans but I find it all poor substitutes and I can't get a full shop there anyway. The fruit is particularly bad.

LemonWeb · 04/07/2021 17:45

219 is a lot for a weekly shop Shock was it for a fortnight or do you have a big family to feed?

bruffin · 04/07/2021 17:46

cheap but not quality and they lie on their adverts as they compare their own brand prices to main brands in other supermarkets, so not like for like.

Rabbitheadlights · 04/07/2021 17:47

@MouldyPotato ... There are 9 of us and a cat.

I do nearly all of my shopping at Aldi and rate it highly. Don't tend to buy processed meals so can't comment on those but the fruit, veg, meat and fish I buy is fine and the range of groceries seems to expand all the time. There are only a few things I have to go to Sainsbury / Tesco for now and if I do pick up a basket of shopping whilst there, I'm usually shocked at the price of similar items (often double for seemingly same quality items). There is an Aldi bit further away that I occasionally pop into and the quality of stuff there seems to be less good, fruit and veg looks wilted so wonder if there's variability between stores, perhaps down to good / bad management

Comedycook · 04/07/2021 17:47

So in the space of mine days you've spent over £350 on food?! Shock. How many are in your family?!

Comedycook · 04/07/2021 17:47

*nine days

BeachWalk1 · 04/07/2021 17:47

I don’t have Aldi or Lidil close to me but on the occasions I’ve went to see what all the fuss was about I’ve been disappointed. One time I’m sure the shop was more expensive that my normal shop and another time I couldn’t get half the stuff I needed.

Cam2020 · 04/07/2021 17:47

Never had any problems but haven't used them in a long time. Recently had an Ocado delivery of M&S items and several fresh fruit/veg went moldy before their expiry date and other products had very short dates. I've found the same in my local Sainsbury, so I'm assuming this is a genereal issue recently.

I'm surprised about the nappies. I always found them so much better than Pampers, however my DC is 4 so I've not used them in years and it's possible they've changed since then!

Shmithecat2 · 04/07/2021 17:48

I buy bread and veg from Aldi - never had an issue with any of it being bad or out date. Their bacon and sausage are great, as is their hummus range. Their salted butter (with salt crystals) is divine. Ds prefers their choc chip brioche to any others, and I can't resist the mystery aisles. I can't do a full shop there (I prefer certain brands of laundry and cleaning products), I buy most meat joints etc from my local butcher, but I think its great, very well priced, especially their pull up nappies.

Snaketime · 04/07/2021 17:48

I love ALDI, but then again I spend £80 on 2 weeks worth of food for 4 of us and I think that is a lot of money, but then again I have 2 low paying jobs. How the hell younger to spend over £200 in ALDI is beyond me. The most I ever payed there is £150 and that was food to take on holiday with us with extra to keep in our freezer for when we got back.

MouldyPotato · 04/07/2021 17:48

I spent £50 and did a weeks shop for 2 adults and a baby including nappies last week. Not sure I could spent £219 if I'd tried.

Kottbullar · 04/07/2021 17:48

I wouldn't imagine supermarket quarter pounders to be anything but gristly tbh.
YANBU about the fruit and veg. It's virtually always mouldy or mushy.
There's a few things I like but I couldn't do a full shop or spend £215!

Stevearnottsbeard · 04/07/2021 17:48

Love aldi, never had a problem with anything from there, I do every weekly shop there
