So frustrated trying to find something to wear to a wedding.

I'm short. The current trend for maxi dresses and midi dresses doesn't work for me. Neither does the trend for wearing a smock that looks like you're wearing a giant billowy tablecloth. Tight fitting dresses are also out thanks to the mum tum.

There seems to be little outside of this. Not helped by the death of the high street.

Where can I find something flattering that doesn't cost the earth? Budget is max £70.

Popsy do a wide range of styles, and you can ask for free alterations at checkout 👍

I'm 5ft2 so maxi dresses are a big no go. What shape is your body? I have large breasts, a tiny upper waste and bigger hips/thighs and I have found that A-line midi dresses or A-line tea dresses suit my shape perfectly and are very flattering. Not to tight or fitted and really compliments my height and shape.

Midi dresses do look more like maxi dresses on me but they are nice and summery and very comfortable.

BlueVanilla have some really nice summer/formal dresses just now. Worth a look.

Big boobed here as well - which again isn't helpful as a lot of dresses are plunging, and wrap dresses etc I always have to wear a modesty vest underneath which ruins the look.

I've had a few dresses from Blue Vanilla in the past so will take a look. Good idea!

I’m five feet one and although haven’t bought a formal dress since before lockdown I used to buy lots for weddings and cruises from Quiz.

Bathshebahardy · 05/07/2021 10:03

Seasalt dresses tend to be short waisted and knee length and fit me
well but probably not formal enough for a wedding.

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 05/07/2021 10:04

I have this from New Look.

www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/dresses/petite-black-floral-frill-mini-wrap-dress/p/687721209?_cclid=Google_EAIaIQobChMI-OLNncnL8QIVie3tCh3_FgHAEAQYBSABEgI8FfD_BwE&extcam=UK_PPC_PLA_Designer_NC_Google_DV_m&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-OLNncnL8QIVie3tCh3_FgHAEAQYBSABEgI8FfD_BwE

I know what you mean though, as soon as I see that the ‘model is 5ft8’ I think we’ll fuck it, no point me buying that.

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 05/07/2021 10:05

*well not we’ll.

I did have to size up to accommodate the boobs but it’s fine.

Trudij123 · 13/07/2021 19:06

Joe browns usually have a really nice selection at sensible lengths and flattering :)

I feel your pain OP.

I’m also short. Maxi dresses are either so long I’m falling over them and even if they’re not they make me look even shorter than I am. Midi dresses are an even bigger no and they are an awful really unflattering mid calf length on me.

My only suggestion is to find something you like and get it shortened to fit you.

CaptainSweatpants89 · 13/07/2021 21:09

Hi OP!

I'm also short and always been quite an athletic figure (huge thighs, broad shoulders, big boobs) and since having my son 7 weeks ago I now have a tum to match!

While I transition my size again (and even when I'm not) my go to for dresses is popsy clothing. They do skater dresses with an assortment of gorgeous prints, jumpsuits and even "chub rub" (pardon the phrase) shorts for your thighs to go underneath!

Their patterns go from wedding style to quirky, and even suitable for the office!

www.popsyclothing.co.uk/

And their reasonably priced at around £36!!

Defiantly41 · 13/07/2021 21:19

If you search for 'petite' on the John Lewis site, you will get loads - Hobbs petite, Fenn Wright Manson petite and Boden petite amongst others

I'd also recommend a personal stylist there, virtual or in person, they know they stick really well and will know which designers come up small and neat vs the billowing/generous ones - sometimes Ralph Lauren works well for example

wiccamum · 13/07/2021 21:34

Harkel and Hell Bunny have some lovely dresses. Skater style, lovely patterns to dress up or down. Hell Bunny is great if you want a 50s look, which I’ve found can be very forgiving on the mumtum

Italiangreyhound · 13/07/2021 22:02

Really like the Lucinda Jersey Midi Dress - Navy, Regular Dot version of that for £80.00. shenanigans

Italiangreyhound · 13/07/2021 22:46

Wow, Trudij123 love this one www.joebrowns.co.uk/perfect-pink-dress-we421

Saw lovely red print dress in M &S today tried on knee length on average size, midi on me at 4 11.fine but neckline came too low so thst was that no good. Then tried Vera moda one, fitted fine at top im 6/8 but swept the floor and shortening wouldnt work on this dress, loved the unusual animal print so bought skirt in same print also very long but can be shortened to midi.

Why the hell are there so few clothes for petite women, and please 6/8 models nay be 5 9 or 10 but most normal women that size are 5 foot nothingslol

casualnamechange · 14/07/2021 00:13

It’s not very helpful because I like midi dresses and smock dresses - I’m 5 ft 1 and I find they work! ASOS is good for dresses.

Creativenina · 16/07/2021 12:24

I’m short 5’ so always have the same issue. Monsoon do really nice clothes for special occasions and they are reasonably priced. Karen Millen are also good, Jigsaw and Hobbs. They are all doing sales so I am sure you will find something nice within your budget. Boden do a petit range. I’ve bought a few dresses from there and they fit really nice.

Creativenina · 16/07/2021 12:26

A wrap style dress is usually flattering on most shapes. It gives us petites a bit of height.

Creativenina · 16/07/2021 12:29

I’ve also bought a few lovely clothes from Esprit. They do petit sizes.
