To ask for coffee machine recommendations

I love my coffee but our Nespresso Creatista has died so I'm looking to replace it. I would like to move away from pods completely but I haven't a clue what makes a coffee machine 'good' or what I should be looking for or avoiding in a new machine?

My pod machine died and I’ve moved to filter coffee. I didn’t want the noise of a bean to cup machine and I’ve gone off the milk pods for cappuccino etc anyway but since having the filter coffee, it’s so nice and smooth I’m drinking it black. I have a milk frother so could make cappuccino style using that with filter set on strong.

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/07/2021 20:37

I have a low-tech system of coffee grinder, small milk pan and electric whisk/frother, with a large Bialetti stove-top coffee pot (I bought 30 yrs ago for uni, and found replacement seals for a recent refurb).

It’s fab. Not a faff when you get used to it, and very economical. Spend the money on great beans. I can make a large latte for about 25-30p.

:D

ILOVEALLCAKES · 04/07/2021 20:39

Sorry for jumping on this thread, but I would be grateful for recommendations for a grinder. We’ve recently inherited my DF’s Classic Gaggia and would like to buy my DH one.

Youarenothere · 04/07/2021 20:41

Filter coffee household here. Have the Techni Vorm Moccamaster. Great coffee, stays heated for 45mins, easy to clean and is still going strong after 10years. Down side is it uses more coffee than a standard cafetière, and I tend to drink a jug full instead of one cup. (DH worked for years in s posh coffee shop with amazing machines and this was his choice)

Chickpea22 · 04/07/2021 20:43

Same question as ILOVEALLCAKES. I love my stove top but the hand grinder is a real faff.

nevisbump · 04/07/2021 20:48

We used to have a pod one and moved to a standard filter machine and so glad we did. Coffee is nicer and not using lots of pods each day

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/07/2021 20:50

@ILOVEALLCAKES & @Chickpea22 I have an electric Krups grinder. Think it was about £25. Needs pulsing (no longer than 5secs each pulse) to not stress the motor. No of pulses depends on how coarse or fine you want it.

m0therofdragons · 04/07/2021 20:55

I went for a Smeg filter jug purely for looks but any with a timer you can set for the morning would be good as it’s more about the coffee you use. I like Illy classic.

Wow! So many responses - thanks everybody for all of the advice & recommendations. I'm going to take those suggestions and see what's available & best value x

Thank you, I read pulsing is key to most grinders. That’s his birthday sorted.

We're on our second Delonghi magnifica bean to cup machine and it is by far the most popular gadget in our kitchen. Love it.

HOkieCOkie · 04/07/2021 21:18

I have a sage filter i love it.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/07/2021 21:18

I need to have my coffee milky so wanted an espresso machine when I moved on from pods. But not knowing what was good or not I bought a cheapy from Currys and it's great! Not the best recommendation but if you're used to the creatista and like that sort of coffee then an espresso machine is probably where you want to go. Delonghi do a machine that does both but it's big!

HOkieCOkie · 04/07/2021 21:21

I also wanted to move from pods.

RandomMess · 04/07/2021 21:22

I use a one cup filter machine by Slater, hardly takes up any room, washable filter cost £20

Obviously I just use a normal cup rather than the travel one at home

Percolator.

Three cups of water. Four rounded scoops of 4 strength coffee (e.g. supermarket Italian or French style ground coffee that you'd use in a filter machine or cafetiere). Takes about 5-7 min. Fresh, delicious coffee that is actually hot, and the device will keep it hot for another 10 min or so if you press the button again after pouring your first cup. No waste apart from the leftover coffee grounds.

I’ve got this grinder. Pricy but it’s perfect.

Tossblanket · 04/07/2021 22:09

Best coffee I've had is using a chemex.

Such a nice way to spend a little time using it.
I'm a bit nerdy, so I roast beans in a popcorn popper the previous day and grind fresh the next.
Freshness of the coffee is key.

I've got a bialetti stove top and an aeropress but nothing beats the chemex.

Timemore Chestnut C2.

Amazing grinder for the money.

LakeFlyPie · 04/07/2021 22:13

You really need a decent burr grinder (not blades)
My coffee nut friend recommended investing in a decent grinder (£100) and getting a second hand espresso machine (plenty of decent Gaggia machines available as they last for ages and can be refurbed)

Perfectlystill · 04/07/2021 22:15

Delonghi Magnifica bean to cup. It's fabulous - we've had it nearly 11 years and it still works perfectly.

Super easy to use and maintain, and the coffee is delicious.

Heronatemygoldfish · 04/07/2021 22:26

I haven't got much kitchen worktop space so I got a decent burr grinder (Krups GVX231 is current version, a MN recommendation!) and a cheap one-cup drip machine with a permanent filter (Breville VCF050 Coffee Express, now discontinued) which is not a brilliant design but makes good coffee which never tastes burnt. I spend daft amounts of money on coffee beans. I tend to have flat whites and if I have the urge for a latte then I froth warm milk using a cafetiere. Works a treat!

Enko · 04/07/2021 22:52

I really like my sage machine but it's not the bean to cup one. We have had gagging and jura been to cup but this sage one is my favorite

Ooh, never heard of Chemex. A quick google suggests it's a nice looking jug to hold a paper filter. Is that it, or is there more to it than that?
