To ask what days beds are more likely to be available on a mental health unit

I would assume Mondays? Ds is currently waiting for one. The trust have said they are usually full at weekends.

That's not really how it works, and having an answer to your question won't make a bed available any quicker.

People are being admitted and discharged every day of the week. There usually isn't a set day

purplepoppet92 · 03/07/2021 17:07

It doesn't really work that way. A bed will be available when someone is discharged, and depending on urgency of those on the waiting list, the highest priority will be offered a bed.
You are right in the sense that people are less likely to be discharged/admitted on a weekend though

Anothermother3 · 03/07/2021 20:19

It’s dire at times and I’m so sorry you are waiting. I hope there’s a bed soon and it’s local. Let them know if he deteriorates and don’t stop letting them know

minimadgirl · 03/07/2021 20:32

Weekends are defintely the busiest for admissions. But as for when a bed is most likely to come up, its pot luck and depends on when Ward rounds are, which differs per hospital.

More likely Tuesday-Friday in my experience. Gives them chance to discharge patients on Monday if they’ve had a good weekend.

Sadly services have been underfunded for years and there simply aren’t enough beds in England for people who need them. And it’s not like a 2 day stay is enough for a complex mental health problem to get assessed, sorted and a discharge plan made.

It could be a very long wait, sadly. How old is your son? Will he be going to an adult ward?

Wildtimes78889 · 03/07/2021 21:57

He’s 25 so yes it will be an adult ward. Yes I feel the stays they often give people are too short to do a proper assessment.

When my relative was admitted, there was a strict 3 weeks & you're discharged if meds have kicked in. Sometimes it was 3 weeks when they hadn't kicked in, if they regarded a 'frequent flyer' as too much hassle - which appalled me tbh. Busy days for admitting were Thurs & Fri.
