Hi all,

I am posting here for traffic I'm sorry but I'm just really worried, my DS is in his 6th month, he's 23 weeks old and we've started him on some puree food a day, only a bit but he's a big hungry baby which is the reason we've started a bit early, I'm unwell in bed with the flu and my mum is here looking after Ds, she's fed him but hasn't sterilised his bowl or spoon, it's been washed obviously but not sterilised, what should I do? What do I need to look out for? I'm don't know if I'm over reacting but I'm terrified of him getting really poorly, it's my fault as I forgot to mention it but in all fairness I didn't know she'd feed him as I normally do it a bit later on in the day, is there anything I should be looking out for?

I never sterilised the bowl and spoon. I’ve never heard of it! Just bottles.

Hallyup6 · 03/07/2021 13:39

First baby? Bless you. He'll be dining on floor tapas soon enough. Absolutely no need to sterilise bowls and spoons. He'll be fine.

dottiedodah · 03/07/2021 13:39

Dont worry OP .Children love putting earth ,slugs and anything else they can reach in their mouths! An unsterilised plate or bowl will not harm him! Hope you soon feel better!

AdaHopper · 03/07/2021 13:40

My DC started experimenting with solids at 5 months. I have never sterilises anything except bottles. And I stopped that at 6 months too.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 03/07/2021 13:41

That's funny, Mumoftwoinprimary, did you get a secret photo never to show your husband? Grin

Hope you are reassured and feel better soon, PennyDreadful66

bobby6678 · 03/07/2021 13:41

I didn't need to sterilise at that age..or clean up..my dog licked them clean.

Chill out, it's great for the immune system.

speakout · 03/07/2021 13:43

I never knew sterilising stuff was even a thing.
I know bottles have to be sterilised, but my baby plates and spoons were just washed with the normal washing up in hot soapy water.
None of my children had tummy bugs.

Tvscreen · 03/07/2021 13:43

I wouldn’t worry. My DS licked a pram wheel around that age and is a rowdy 2.5 yo now. I hope you feel better soon!

Marmite27 · 03/07/2021 13:44

I never sterilised plates and cutlery. Seemed pointless when they were licking the floor.

speakout · 03/07/2021 13:45

My neighbour'sbaby started crawling at 7 months. She had to put a baby gate around the cats bowl. On several ocassions caught her baby happily chomping on the cat food.

notacooldad · 03/07/2021 13:49

I'm don't know if I'm over reacting
You are.

WeatherSystems · 03/07/2021 13:52

In America the advice isn’t to even sterilise bottles and teats unless there’s a specific reason, for example premature babies. They just say it’s fine to give a hot scrub in the sink.

Nothing to worry about here OP, at all. Don’t get into the habit of sterilising plates and cutlery once you’re well as it’s not needed :) hope you feel better soon!

speakout · 03/07/2021 14:00

Sounds such a faff.
I have never sterilised anything for my babies- but never used bottles.

Nat6999 · 03/07/2021 14:01

I didn't sterilise bowls & cutlery, just put it all in the dishwasher, I always put bottles & teats in after a quick rinse & then sterilised afterwards. Once ds started crawling & shuffling I stopped sterilising bottles & teats especially after watching him putting his dummy in his mouth after trying to draw patterns with it on the floor.

girlmom21 · 03/07/2021 14:08

You don't need to sterilise bowls and spoons...

skodadoda · 03/07/2021 14:09

@MagnoliaBeige

I didn’t know sterilizing bowls and spoons was necessary with weaning, I only ever did that with bottles. He’ll be fine!
This; not when mine were babies, (1970s), nor the grandchildren, (2000s)
Imapotato · 03/07/2021 14:09

It’s a while ago but I don’t think I sterilised my dds cutlery ever.

By that age my two were sticking all sort from the floor into their mouths. Sterilising seemed like a lost cause.

So relax, he’ll be fine.

What's the worse that can happen
There it is again - where is the swapping of worse and worst coming from?

Seesawmummadaw · 03/07/2021 14:18

I don’t know why but describing a 6 month old as 23 weeks tickles me.

I have a 574 week old and stopped sterilising when he started putting his hands up the dogs nose and playing with dirt.

Hope you feel better soon. Trust your mum, she probably knows what she’s doing.

bishbashbosh99 · 03/07/2021 14:28

I've never sterilised a thing. You'll be fine

snowdaysalldays · 03/07/2021 14:35

I understand why you’re worried but he will be fine. At that age they are putting their hands in their mouth after touching lots of things. Try not to worry.

RainbowCrayons · 03/07/2021 15:24

I was like that at this age. We did baby led weaning too so I gave DS the sterilized spoon, he licked it and threw it on the floor. I sterilized it and gave it back with the next bite. He licked it and threw it on the floor again. Repeat for however many bites he could actually be bothered to take at that age. It lasted a week and I came to my senses. I don't blame you at all but it really isn't necessary so don't feel bad!

imaginethemdragons · 03/07/2021 15:28

Holy moley is sterilisation of bowls etc a thing?!!!!!

I never did and mine have survived to good ages so far.

Chuck that into the fuck it bucket op, it’s a non issue.

NewlyGranny · 03/07/2021 15:33

DD2 wasn't walking when I was travelling without DH with 3 under 4. We were in transit somewhere in a gulf state airport; the water was off, the toilets were footprint ones which the twins had never encountered, we couldn't wash our hands afterwards and then suddenly the baby was chewing on something she'd picked up off the floor. It was a cigarette butt. 😱

We all survived and everyone grew up healthy.

23 weeks is probably a bit less than 6 months.

It's usual to describe age in weeks up to 1. Then in months up to 2. They change so much during the first year or two it is relevant.
