Clintons are selling Christmas cards already

And you can't even avoid them. They're not tucked away in a corner, they're a huge window display.

FFS it's nearly six months to Christmas, leave us alone.

And I know there'll be people who think it's great, they can get everything done well ahead, but I'm definitely not one of them. I like Christmas but I'd be happy if it didn't start until 1st December at the earliest.

AIBU?

@phoenixrosehere

Is it the “Christmas in July” malarkey?
Is this why shops are selling mince pies?! I love a mince pie as much as the next person but not whilst it's 23c outside and gorgeous sunshine, it just isn't right.
newnortherner111 · 02/07/2021 17:06

If it were my decision there would be double VAT on Christmas goods at this time of year.

I understand mail takes time to some countries, but surely wait until the beginning of October? Or are they expecting non-urgent shops to be closed at some point owing to yet more incompetence from the Prime Minister?

Feedingthebirds1 · 02/07/2021 17:07

@TrashKitten10

That was Junemas (not kidding). Which PR person came up with that one, and can I get my hands on him/her?

I thought it was bad, but at least it would be over after June.

I don’t buy anything from Clinton Cards.

Many many years ago there was a piece about them in the financial section of a Sunday paper and the two founders bragged that when they started out in the wholesale trade they would send out slightly less then was ordered. Sharp practice - no thanks.

StoneofDestiny · 02/07/2021 17:51

National Trust have been selling them for weeks.

Demelza82 · 02/07/2021 19:23

People who even notice this stuff alone let alone get riled up about it need hobbies

porkincider · 02/07/2021 19:27

For some reason I read this as The Clinton’s and opened the thread expecting to see their Christmas card

Ericaequites · 02/07/2021 19:31

Drapers have Christmas fabrics and craft kits on sale now, but making Christmas takes time. A quilt can’t be run up in a week, unless you do nothing else but sleep and eat prepared food.

Crankley · 02/07/2021 19:47

IMNOTSHOUTING I was just about to ask if it was Hilary or Bill. Grin

Ponoka7 · 02/07/2021 20:04

December 2st is too late to start Christmas. It might suit you but it would mean that people would miss out on Christmas activities because everywhere would be booked up and time was taken up with shopping.
Boris is saying that if another lock down is needed over winter, then it will happen. Some people want to be done by November so they don't have to go into busy shops. The high street needs to sell as much as possible or come a few years, they'll die out.

That's different to cards though. A card only has to be bought, written and posted. It can be done in a day.

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

I was just wondering what Hillary & Bill were up to
Same here Grin
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/07/2021 20:08

Probably last years stock! Card shops suffered badly last year.

TopTabby · 02/07/2021 20:12

Nooooo! The earliest I've seen them before was August Bank Holiday. Dd's birthday is September & there's always loads then meaning g less of the usual cards to choose from.
I like to get organised but not this early, no way!
Maybe trying to cash in on scared people thinking there might be more Lockdowns?

MorganKitten · 02/07/2021 21:19

It’s based on the American Junemas, selling the last of the old xmas stock in June and then getting it all back out again in November

EastWestWhosBest · 02/07/2021 21:21

@phoenixrosehere

Is it the “Christmas in July” malarkey?
I think it might be. Our Co-Op is selling mince pies with the same reason.
ViciousJackdaw · 02/07/2021 21:44

We don't know what's going to happen between now and then though. Christmas just isn't important to me at all, I'd gladly see the back of it. For some though, it's the highlight of the year and means so much.

As irritating as it is, I don't begrudge these people the chance of getting organised well in advance. If people have more time to get what they need, it could theoretically help with social distancing etc. in the winter months. I expect Clintons need to have a real push on sales too - if they went bust that would mean yet more empty shops and more job losses too. Nobody wants that.

OP, just turn the other cheek and think of the greater good. There's enough things in this country for us to fume over already, life is too short to create more.

Lunificent · 02/07/2021 21:49

@ZingDramaQueenofSheba that’s what I thought the post was about!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/07/2021 21:49

I love Christmas, but there’s no way I want to see anything Christmassy in the shops before October. And preferably not until after the clocks change. A tall order nowadays though, when there are usually mince pies on sale on once the schools go back in September.

Illogicalmadness · 09/07/2021 09:24

I think retailers know something we don't about the coming winter. Don't take the prime minister's word for anything, he can't tell his arse from his elbow. The new delta virus is unpredictable and retailers are selling early to ensure they're not left with unsold stock. Plus they get a steady cash flow coming through the next few months to offset any closures later.

Christmas cards come out in June/July at all big retailers every single year and have done for many, many years.

It’s unrelated to the pandemic/government.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/07/2021 09:28

Really?! Good grief.
Ok, where are the ear plugs? ….. Noddy Holder next.

Illogicalmadness · 09/07/2021 09:28

Round my way, the earliest I've seen Xmas cards has been late Aug (national trust) & early Sept. Never before the school summer holidays.

NannyAndJohn · 09/07/2021 09:30

They want to get the sales in before the next lockdown.

LettyLoman · 09/07/2021 09:34

PRET in the city have their Christmas decorations up on Wednesday this week.
