Is this a good size for a garden 70 feet by 40 feet

My garden is 70 ft wide x 40 ft deep from the back of the house. Is that a good size for a town/suburban garden. Five bed house the width of the garden. Had an estate agent out to value and he said the depth is an issue. It's almost half lawn half terrace. Green slate it's really nice. I was taken aback by what he said. For context, in the suburbs of a large town in the southeast. What do you think?

I think it depends on who is looking and where this is. People are looking for as big a garden as poss now so the size probably wouldn't be an issue 2 years ago. For a 5 bed house in the suburbs I'm assuming you will be putting it up for close to a mil so I would personally want a much deeper garden for that.

It’s a decent sized garden for an average house but it’s small for a five bed. People looking at houses that big May well have 4+ kids so would want a lot of space outside.

Also when half the garden is taken up by patio or decking then it leaves only a small area of grass which limits space for big toys like trampoline etc. And just makes the garden look smaller overall in my opinion.

How long is a piece of string? It depends entirely on your own point of view.

It doesn't sound in proportion to the house size. Was it bigger but some sold off, something like that? Or is it very modern, as newer houses do seem to have much smaller plots?

I have a three bed semi, our garden is about 80 ft x 26 ft. Ours is longer than it is wide, which suits us better. If I was looking for a bigger house I would want a bigger garden, but that's just us; other families might not care. A lot of people don't seem fussed about gardens at all.

Just thinking about it, a lot of houses in the roads around actually have much shorter gardens than us, we were lucky getting this one.

Doesn’t sound big for a 5 bed house
When we were viewing we saw a lot of larger properties which had disproportionately smaller gardens - ie they’d extended massively and reduced size etc
For a large house, assume there’s a number of kids / larger family who would want a larger garden
It is very personal tho - some people won’t mind but for others it’s a deal breaker

Mines just short of 40ft for a 5 bed house although it's more or less square. It's the one thing I compromised on and tbh, I hate it because it feels so enclosed. I think it'd be fine if there were no houses behind us though.

Reasonably OK I suppose. Ours is tiny for quite a big house (about 30ft x 20ft for a 4 bed/3 reception terrace) but then we're very near local tube, where most houses don't have big gardens, plus we have a park around the corner

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 02/07/2021 11:33

that's approx 21m x 12m.

that doesn't sound too bad

Essentialironingwater · 02/07/2021 11:42

If it's new build I'd not be surprised but in a mature area with naice houses that are period/all individual it's probably quite small. Depends entirely on your area, market and house so hard to say.

It would be large for the 4 bed we recently left in Belfast but all gardens were small in that area. We are now on 4.5 acres where everyone has at least 0.5 acres of garden around us. All relative!

Wellpark · 02/07/2021 12:04

Not per it of house but seventies. Lots of similar types around and also newer big houses with smaller gardens. So it's not unusual for this area. I think young families who would want trampolines etc wouldn't be able to afford it tbh so they are not really the target market. There's a big park at the end of the road too so it's not too urbanised here. There's ample space on the terrace for a small seating area a large table and chairs two sunbeds and a BBQ grill. Plus flower beds and lawn. I just think the estate agent was being picky. The other two who came out said it was great. But that guy has down seeds of doubt in my mind.
