I've just spent £50 on tickets ... for the second time. I didn't win a dream house last time. Maybe this time I will. Blush

Depends really. How often it is and whether you can afford it. Im always worried they are scams; so Id probably save the money in my buying my retirement cottage by the sea fund.

Besides which I saw one the other day for some big fancy home worth 1.5m and all I could think about was how much the insurance and council tax and upkeep would be! But then we have our own home (not by the sea) and the mortgage is paid off, if not I might feel differently!!

It's by a big charity, so I don't think it's a scam but you never know.

This is only the second time I've done it but what if it becomes an addiction like gambling?

I spent 150 and still didn't win even one of the other prizes. don't intend to do that again

MidnightHangingTree · 01/07/2021 20:38

I'd spend maybe £5, not £50... you'd be better off putting the £50 in a savings account towards your deposit rather than just throwing it away.

Paddingtonitspaddingtonbear · 01/07/2021 20:41

Omaze?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 01/07/2021 20:47

Yeah that’s a lot to gamble - would you spend £50 on lottery tickets?

I’ve entered a couple of those draws for cars/vans for £5 a ticket. That’s as much as I’m willing to gamble on anything with such an unlikely chance of winning.

And those houses, I always think why are they being given away rather than sold? One I saw recently was prone to flooding. People were saying “well it’s a free house, so if you have to spend a few thousand to flood proof it and lay new carpets etc what’s the problem?” But you still have to find the money to do all that and to furnish it, and insure etc

Great Ormand Street?

HeronLanyon · 01/07/2021 20:57

Well good luck and quite right to keep an eye on it in case it becomes addictive. Maybe ‘allow yourself mn to do this say twice a year (or whatever).
I gave my dp some scratched cards s for a silly birthday present. First I had ever bought. That week I then bought more two further days because I found them really rather exciting. I had to have a sharp word with myself !

Unihorn · 01/07/2021 20:59

Yes Omaze gets me every time. The Devon one looks nice!

Flavabobble · 01/07/2021 21:01

Is it the Wimbledon one or the Devon? I quite enjoy checking out the layout of the Devon one, I've yet to see a plan of the Wimbledon one.

it's not like gambling, it is gambling.

I'm sure I read an article recently that the people who won the omaze one are struggling to ensure it because it had already flooded whilst being built......

Yes

Yeah the most I've spent on lottery tickets is £10.

Wimbledon. I live in Morden and love going to the village and the common, and dream of living in one of those mansions.

The funny thing is, I don't particularly like the Wimbledon house, I just love the location. I didn't see the floorplans, do they get released separately? Maybe I can build a version in the Sims Grin

My husband has spent £25 so far. 🙈 he works in Wimbledon (from home atm) and would love that house haha.

Kendodd · 25/07/2021 10:05

I don't think I'd spend £50, £10 maybe (I think even that's too much).
I do buy a lottery ticket occasionally.
For me the point of these things is to buy a fantasy for a little bit (let's face it, you're not going to win) and for the dreaming and planning, I think it's worth it. You can buy that dream for the minimum spend though, one lottery ticket buys you as much of a fantasy as 100 tickets. My top tip would be not to check the ticket until the latest date so you get the best value for money, once you've checked your ticket, and not won, your dream is over.

EmeraldShamrock · 25/07/2021 10:09

I have bought tickets 3 different times.
If you're not in you can't win, however I wouldn't spend a lot the win would be priceless and life changing.
I'm not very lucky, never win anything. Grin

ineedaholidaynow · 25/07/2021 10:12

When we see the adverts for these houses, DH and DS just want the cars! However, we also commented on the cost of insurance and running costs for both house and car.

I suppose if you have a house to sell so you can move into the new house the proceeds would give you savings to help fund the expenses.

I assume most people who win a house ultimately end up selling it

Kendodd · 25/07/2021 10:18

Just looked, the Devon house looks like it would be boiling in the summer and freezing in the winter.
