Is it common to have both Dyspraxia and ASD?

I'm posting here for traffic

Me and my DS who is 21 are both in agreement that he may have ASD, for context he was diagnosed with dyspraxia when he was very young, at nursery age. At the time they said he had some ASD traits but not enough to diagnose him with ASD.

Is it common for people to have both dyspraxia and ASD? And what did it mean that he was not officially diagnosed back then. Throughout his school years and university no one has mentioned that DS may be autistic. However I have read that many adults go in to adulthood undiagnosed.

Yes I believe so.

Diagnostic criteria for ASD has changed in recent years so he may have just missed the threshold.

Yes, it used to be part of an aspergers diagnosis but is now usually labelled a co-morbidity with ASD.

My DD was originally diagnosed with dyspraxia, the psychiatrist who carried out her ASD said it is common in girls to be diagnosed with dyspraxia when they have ASD.

Robotindisguise · 01/07/2021 19:42

Yes, very common. The educational psychologist who diagnosed DD said his typical patient was hypermobile, dyspraxic and had ASD or ADHD

I don't know about common but it definitely happens. In my case, the ASD was flagged up during my assessment for dyspraxia when I was 27. It helps to know why I mess up but fwiw, I really struggle because I desperately want structure but my brain is too chaotic to create a reliable one. It makes me a sad and anxious sort of person. Don't know if any of that applies to your son but it is worth keeping an eye out.

I'm autistic (adult diagnosis). I haven't been diagnosed with dyspraxia but I wouldn't be surprised if I have it; it's something I wondered about long before I considered ASD.

Lots of symptoms eg rubbish at PE at school; awful hand-eye co-ordination; struggled with handwriting at school; frequently walk into doorways; find it hard to ride a bike and can't cope with trying to pedal and turning my head to look at something at the same time; little sense of rhythm.

Yes, very common.
ASD is rarely found alone. It's often the primary diagnosis, then other conditions are listed after it on health records.

Any combination of ASD ADHD, Dyspraxia Dyslexia JHS EDS SPD (before it was included in ASC) are very common.

Anxiety isn't always listed separately, but it's very common to have that alongside ASD.

CFS/ME/other fatigue and brainfog conditions are common too.

What tends to happen is each child or person presents with some of those conditions at the point of assessment, but over time, some conditions are more easily managed, masked or coped with by the person so they are not as obvious to an observer. Then another condition seems to be prominent until interventions are sufficient for it not to be so easily observable.

My son was diagnosed with both aged 10 & at the time I was told it was told it was very common to be diagnosed with both.

Sl0wM0 · 01/07/2021 21:04

My dd was diagnosed with dyspraxia, hyper mobility and sensory processing at 10. Autism at 16.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 01/07/2021 21:07

Yes, they're very common co-morbidities. DS has diagnoses of both.

Clymene · 01/07/2021 21:08

Yes. We got dyspraxia, hyper mobility and sensory processing disorder dx at 6. ASD at 11

HotPenguin · 01/07/2021 21:10

Yes, I was told about half of people with ASD also have dyspraxia.
