As the title says, what was your first job as an adult, ie. not doing a Saturday shift as a teen but your first full time job?
Did you enjoy it, did you hate it?

Banking. Straight from school, loved it and spent over 20 years working my way up. I never had a job before that.

SorrySoldOut · 01/07/2021 19:00

Saturday job merged into full time when I turned 18

Went from a waitress at a Little Chef to a cook at the same Little Chef!

Really liked it too

NaToth · 01/07/2021 19:02

Selling office furniture. That was a waste of my hard earned history degree.

StraightsAStraightHair · 01/07/2021 19:02

Teacher. 21 on my first day. The first time I did the register, my hands were shaking so much I nearly dropped the pen Grin

Wrotten · 01/07/2021 19:04

Brantano while in sixth form.

Fucking hated it.

Keepyourdistance000 · 01/07/2021 19:04

Customer Service Agent in a cliquey Call Centre run by cliquey hierarchical women who only promoted their friends. Favouritism was rife.

BikeRunSki · 01/07/2021 19:05

Graduate engineering geologist

Wrotten · 01/07/2021 19:06

Oh. I've read this wrong. That wasn't a proper job.

Selling advertising space in a crappy newspaper. Awful, awful job. I got fired for not meeting targets after two month. Refused to even look at a sales role after.

ladygindiva · 01/07/2021 19:10

working in a care home with the elderly. Loved it. I would go back to it but the pay is shite and an insult.

Mintjulia · 01/07/2021 19:11

Tech support analyst at a systems integrator in London.

I loved it.

SaltyAF · 01/07/2021 19:12

I worked as an Account Executive for a marketing consultancy. One of my main accounts was Arizona inward investment. It sounded very grand but in reality I was googling beef jerky and hand warmer stockists. Wasn't long before I thought fuck it and decided I might as well teach.

purplesequins · 01/07/2021 19:17

proper job, i.e. contract, payslip & taxes?

working in a children's summer camp age 18.

SimonJT · 01/07/2021 19:21

Rugby player, yes, it is a proper fulltime job! Absolutely loved it, but the pay is crap, so I now play on a part time basis.

After that my first more traditional fulltime job was as an actuary. Its boring, but it pays the bills.

As a teen/very young adult I did work a lot, but I typically had multiple jobs rather than one fulltime job.

isitjustlockdown · 01/07/2021 19:23

Insurance Advisor. I wouldn't say I loved it, but had a great team around me so it was fun. The actual work was very full and repetitive though, and customers were a nightmare (particularly when they're claims were refused).

whiteroseredrose · 01/07/2021 19:24

Sainsbury's when I was 16.

I've had loads of jobs over the years and am now in a NMW job that is fine.

I still don't think of it as a proper job though. My proper job in my head was my pre DC career!

Contactlesslenses · 01/07/2021 19:24

Site engineer working for a main contractor building stations for London Underground. I now travel through one of the stations I worked on to get to my new job!

lazylinguist · 01/07/2021 19:29

Teaching in a secondary school in London. Age 23. Loved it. Still a teacher over 25 years later. Still sometimes love it Grin.

Jaffacakeinmypocket · 01/07/2021 19:35

Care home for adults with learning disabilities. Spent first few days scared witless thinking I'd never last the month.... 27 years later still work with adults with learning disabilities but not in a care home setting. Absolutely love it but the pay isn't great

thelongwayhome · 01/07/2021 19:47

Thanks for all your replies! After finishing Uni I'm applying for jobs and it's getting me quite excited Grin and got curious about other people's first jobs

Cashier at Yorkshire Bank. Aged 18 and fresh out of sixth form. Absolutely loved that job! Worked my way up until we were all made redundant and the branches closed :(

gwenneh · 01/07/2021 19:53

Project Assistant at a market research firm.
I didn't know what my duties were supposed to be.
My supervisor didn't know what my duties were supposed to be. The role had just been created -- why, I have no idea.
Lasted about six months before we moved abroad and I took a call centre job; better pay and at least there was some direction on what to do!

FizzyPink · 01/07/2021 19:53

Recruitment consultant in the city. It was absolutely brutal as a first job but was the making of me and taught me so much in a very short space of time.

nokidshere · 01/07/2021 19:56

My first job was a live in nanny for a rich family who specialised in furs. Loved it and got to wear the coats on nights out. Disclaimer: this was 43 yrs ago and I'm about to retire .

YesThisIsMe · 01/07/2021 20:01

Trainee Library assistant in a college library.
Not a completely proper job, because I was on a gap year before going onto a post-grad course, just marking time, and it was a one year temporary placement, but it was full time and it was my only source of income to pay my rent, food etc.

I absolutely loved it.

SummeHoliday · 01/07/2021 20:06

Ecological survey work. Awesome people (still in touch with some 30 years later) but fuck it was cold & miserable in winter!!
