Stick to rules or let DD15 attend?

Name changed but long time member. DD15 is due to play at a national competition this weekend, cancelled last year, and the first opportunity for her to be seen by the GB selectors for world competition next summer since Jan 2020 due to lockdown etc. She has been sent home from school to self-isolate until Tuesday due to a positive close contact at school. She has tested negative twice with the official covid test, last one yesterday, negative LFT every day, and no symptoms. OH and I know the rules but we are debating ignoring them and letting her attend on Sunday. We have stuck to the rules for 15 months but I'm completely torn with this one. WWYD?

A friend was in a similar position this week. She was advised to get child to do PCR test 36 hours before event.

This was for a non contact, out door sport.

Thanks for reply - I can book her in for another one tomorrow.

I would say she needs to continue to isolate. I am currently isolating due to prolonged contact with someone who did not tell me they were actually on day 9 on their ‘isolation’. They tested positive on day 11.
It’s not fair to potentially make other people have to isolate (or actually become infected) because you don’t want to follow the rules.

Is the sport an outdoors sport?

Do you know which child has covid and was your daughter actually a close contact?

WeDontLikeCricket · 01/07/2021 11:41

I would take her but just do another proper test beforehand.

DeathByWalkies · 01/07/2021 11:43

I'd go, unless she actually tests positive. This is your daughter's potential career by the sounds of things, and cannot be delayed.

covidcloser · 01/07/2021 11:44

It's unfortunate but I don't think that the rules should not apply simply because of what she would be doing.

We are supposed to be away on a week uk break right now but DS has been told to isolate as a close contact through school. We cancelled the holiday. DS is isolating.

The most frustrating part is seeing/hearing locally of how many parents just didn't bother.

mrsnoodle55 · 01/07/2021 12:19

I too would test, then go (dependant on result, obviously!)

I really hope this approach comes in soon, my daughter had covid 2 weeks ago and I was approached to take part in a government study to ascertain whether daily LFT’s and the rest of us carrying on as normal (if -ve) is feasible, as oppose to close contact isolation as a routine precaution. Hopefully official practice will soon change; the ‘science’ is somewhat dubious anyway. I am surrounded by poorly coughing covid positive patients all day at work, wearing the same PPE you would wear in Sainsbury’s, and yet that’s deemed fine. I don’t have to isolate and never have, all the way through (we would have no staff if that was the case!) Yet I can be pinged in Sainsbury’s wearing the same mask, and I should officially isolate. It’s a bit bonkers to be honest.

Unfortunately this is why it's spreading, everyone thinks they are an exemption. You do know the answer don't you!

flower246267 · 01/07/2021 12:26

I would go ! You've done all the tests etc what more could you really do stay in another 2 days until isolation is up? It's not really going to make a difference .

00100001 · 01/07/2021 12:26

I'd go 🤷‍♀️

Jaxhog · 01/07/2021 12:27

This.
Juststopasking · 01/07/2021 12:28

Id go.

Strawberriesandcream21 · 01/07/2021 12:30

If youd asked 6m ago I'd have said stay home but with so many others doing what they want I think you should get a test 48hrs before and go

Chaotica · 01/07/2021 12:30

I would get her to do the PCR test and go.

CustardyCreams · 01/07/2021 12:38

Get another test and go. I say that as a cautious, boring, usually-law-abiding person.

So few people are really following the rules properly now. Thousands of people going to football matches. Track and trace is crap (my DH got told to isolate for a grand total of 8 hours one weekend!). I don’t see the point any more, in following the rules to the letter.

Knitwit99 · 01/07/2021 12:43

Johanna Konta missed Wimbledon.

What will it do for your dd's reputation at this sport if they find out somehow she should have been isolating or if she does test positive and infect other people?

It's shit. So much is shit right now but there you go.

covidcloser · 01/07/2021 12:47

I came back to say I had changed my mind and she should go, even though I was strongly on the stay at home side not so long ago.

However, @Knitwit99 has raised a really valid point...

What will it do for your dd's reputation at this sport if they find out somehow she should have been isolating or if she does test positive and infect other people?

I think the potential damage in going is actually a huge risk for her career anyway

I'm sorry it's a really shit situation to be in Sad

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 01/07/2021 12:48

Definitely she should go. She can't miss this! She could test beforehand. How many people are out there when they're meant to be isolating, or not even aware that they should be. There's talk of this isolation business being stopped soon anyway I thought?

Quartz2208 · 01/07/2021 12:48

She is 15 she must know the rules, how would she feel if she breaks them (even with a negative test) and other people get it.

Can you speak to the organisers and see if she can test her way out of it - surely her future career is more in jeopardy if they find out (and they could I assume it is common knowledge about both amongst her peers)

Youdiditanyway · 01/07/2021 12:49

I’d go personally. Have her tested 48 hours before, if it’s negative then go. My DS was asked to isolate last year when they sent full school bubbles home (now just send close contacts home) and it was 2 weeks then rather than 10 days. Had him PCR tested twice and both were negative, no symptoms at all so we dropped the isolation on day 10. No qualms about doing so, the rule is 10 days now anyway so…

JustLyra · 01/07/2021 13:03

If they find out she should be isolating the consequences could be very long lasting.

A teen in our village has been kicked out a county squad for their sport for attending a training session when they were meant to be isolating. Most sports seem to be taking it very seriously.
