Climbing plant all over rented house

Hello all! Is anyone able to identify what this is. Photo attached. Just moved into this rented property and it is half covered in climbing plants. It's a nightmare. But all over the walls is this and it looks like it's covered in white paint. The walls look like they have white paint on using a sponge? Is it to prevent the climbing plants or even to aid it or do you think its old pices of plant covered in paint. The walls are covered top to toe with this stuff

Looks like where the plant used to be and it’s been removed, don’t think it’s anything much to worry about

Cupcakeschocolate · 01/07/2021 00:04

Thank you. It was driving me mad. Need to get rid of the climbers now! They are wild!

Definitely looks like someone has taken a climber down and those are the residual roots.

caringcarer · 01/07/2021 00:07

I would spray with a weedkiller.

Taliskerskye · 01/07/2021 02:17

What’s wrong with some plants
Even climbing ones

Yes, spray the shit out of it with carcinogens Bricks are much nicer. Fml

You know there's only 1 thing on earth that officaly "doesn't cause cancer".
QueenOfPain · 01/07/2021 02:25

Is your landlord happy for you to remove the climbing plants? Perhaps they are there deliberately?!

I’d be fuming if someone took it upon themselves to remove a matured wisteria from the property I was letting to them!

FictionalCharacter · 01/07/2021 02:31

Why are climbing plants a nightmare? Why do you think you can get rid of them when they’re not yours?

Not all buildings are suitable for soggy mass of biomatter to be on the side of it
Dannyandsandy · 01/07/2021 04:45

You absolutely can’t remove a climbing plant without your landlords permission.

helpmewiththisnew · 01/07/2021 06:03

Is it salt coming out on your bricks or is it mould? I think it will hard to remove the bits of dead plant off the bricks without doing it by hand. Most climbing plants damage walls, there are a few nice ones but they need caring for and pinning up.

Peppallama · 01/07/2021 06:08

I think you've got too much time on your hands.

Temp023 · 01/07/2021 07:10

Send us a picture of this climbing plant OP.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/07/2021 07:14

I see no plants in your photos.

jessycake · 01/07/2021 07:42

looks like that after you pull ivy off a wall

Conchitastrawberry · 01/07/2021 07:47

Has your landlord said you can remove it? There are different climbing -oats, wisteria is beautiful and I’d be furious if you removed it if it was my property. Some climbing things are awful and grow under tiles and into lofts etc and can cause damage. I’d definitely check with the landlord first.

knittingaddict · 01/07/2021 07:47

Don't remove climbing plants from a rental property. Just keep them under control and away from windows etc. Agree with others, that looks like the remains of a plant ie ivy that has been pulled away from the wall. You could use a stiff brush to get most of it off.

knittingaddict · 01/07/2021 07:50

Some of it looks like the salts that sometimes seep from brickwork. We had it on a new extension we had built. Possibly a combination of the two.

Hesma · 02/07/2021 04:29

Why move into the property if “it’s a nightmare” ? Seems like a strange decision to me 🤷‍♀️

Sciurus83 · 02/07/2021 05:34

It's where it's been cut back. You need to check about removing any more, it seems likely it has been removed to a manageable level already and if they wanted it all removed it would be. As PP say you cannot just remove it on a rental.

Cupcakeschocolate · 02/07/2021 12:35

Thanks all. Well it wasn't this much when we moved in and we have had a lot of rain. Oh and not many properties to choose from at the moment! Renting isn't a pick n mix of houses. Our last landlord was selling and about 30 people are looking at one house so we where lucky to get the property. The house is covered in different growing plants

Some of the plants that are still existing. We haven't taken anything down. No need for people to be rude and start assuming things

The plants do not belong to you OP so you can't just cut them down without permission.
You stated that you needed to get rid of the climbers now. So why are you getting stroppy to people that are telling you that you can't just do that?

Yesitsbess · 02/07/2021 13:59

That looks like Virginia creeper and it's an absolute bugger to keep under control. I would speak to your landlord about having someone deal with it, it gets in guttering, soffits, windows, everywhere and grows like stink. I had to pay a lot of money to have it controlled in my last place, oh, and to make it worse they're always full of spiders!

jasminoide · 02/07/2021 14:04

Not helpful OP, but my dream house has a climber like that.
