I Love Pigeons

I think pigeons have a really bad press. Also, for me, any bird deserves to be preserved [not in a food-type way of course :-(] Several years ago I read a newspaper article whilst on holiday in The Canaries about why pigeons are judged unfairly. Since then I've championed them. I love to hear my native pigeon families cooing from my trees. I have my returning families, alongside the Blackbirds, the Sparrows and the Robins (oh, and the foxes and squirrels).

Today I looked out of my bathroom window and saw a Magpie on the patio chair. Not a fan of Magpies at all (murderers) but was thinking, 'Oh, you're not just black and white; you've also got lovely green/blue plumage'. Then noticed another Magpie by the gate next to the chair. The Magpie on the garden chair hopped onto the chair arm and I exclaimed, 'Oh you sod, you're trying to eat the bees!' The bees were feasting inside the Foxgloves on the patio. I dashed outside to frighten the birds off.

Now I realise I'm quite mad to be talking to birds from inside my house, but I wish pigeons weren't judged as thugs of the bird world as they're pretty useless as survivers compared to other birds.

@Sunny4876

I love 12 year old you! I loathe animal cruelty.

KingdomScrolls · 01/07/2021 23:28

I got shat on by a pigeon not once but twice this week. They can all fuck off as far as I'm concerned, the only bird that's worse is the seagull. Unfortunately we live by the sea....

Lavender24 · 01/07/2021 23:32

I absolutely adore them! They are far nicer than humans

BillywigSting · 01/07/2021 23:40

I also have a Fat Pigeon in my garden in a tree. He has finally found himself a lady pigeon after looking dreadfully forlorn last summer. So I now have a Pair of Fat Pigeons.

They're quite sweet but they're terrified of the magpies.

Then again even the seagulls don't mess with the magpies. Aggressive little shits that they are.

tangone · 01/07/2021 23:56

People who say they are ‘vermin.’ All farm animals carry disease - are they vermin too? What about cats?

cakewench · 01/07/2021 23:58

DS loves them and his love has made me pay more attention to them as well. He’s recently (yr7) had to read a poem called Pigeons in English class. Now when we see them we say “heads like tiny hammers!”

I haven’t shared that with anyone until now, but you feel like our sort of people here Grin

entropynow · 02/07/2021 00:01

@CheerfulBunny

I bought a bird feeder last year to encourage lots of birds to the garden and I've pretty much only had wood pigeons so you'd love it here. I was a bit disappointed to be honest, I was hoping for blue tits and the like but I've learnt to love them. They're so gormless and funny. When they turn up and the feeder is empty they look sort of offended. We refer to them each as BFP or Big Fat Pigeon. They don't half eat a lot, though.
And they come into the BLOODY HOUSE if you leave french windows open.

The definition of 'vermin' doesn't simply refer to disease. Also, I hate cats too, so sue me.

My long- departed Grandad and his brothers were pogeon fanciers (my nickname as a small child was "Pidge") and in recent years, I have become slightly obsessed with the idea of having my own pigeon loft. Just working out how to broach this idea with DH...

My biggest bugbear with pigeons is THEY SHIT EVERYWHERE: down the chimney, in the bird bath, all over the garden paths, on the car, down the front door and windows. I hate the shitters.

Tealightsandd · 02/07/2021 00:10

I love them too OP.

I haven't forgiven Ken Livingstone for banning the bird feeders from Trafalgar Square in London. Nasty anti pigeon man Angry

Pigeons are fab! Smile

XenoBitch · 02/07/2021 00:12

YANBU
There is a railway bridge near me, and it has a load of street pigeons nesting there. I love to walk by and just listen to them coo, and smile at the males getting all puffed up and trying to court the females. The females always seem to be "oh, fuck off!". They seem to come in a variety of colours too... I do like to watch them and pick out the interesting ones.

Tealightsandd · 02/07/2021 00:13

Pigeons are also very old

They used to be dinosaurs. (Sort of).

You need some collared doves. One squared up to a pair of magpies on our garage roof, last summer, and the magpies stayed away after that. Hard as nails are collared doves.

We've had a woodpecker visiting our feeders. Boss blackbird tried to have a go then saw its beak! It didn't bank on local male house sparrow who is quite the little bugger, though. He, and 2 other sparrows, flew at woody from different directions and scared the shit out of it. I love a good sparrow mobbing, so long as it's not at me.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/07/2021 00:23

I like pigeons - we have some Fat Wood Pigeons who drink from and bathe in the barrel ponds on our patio, right by the doors.

But... does anyone else find that their cooing sounds like words? About a year ago or so they started sounding like a repeated phrase. I'm not going to say what as it's incredibly irritating and I don't want to put it into anyone else's head. But if anyone 'hears' a phrase which isn't annoying I'd like to know as I'd like to displace mine.Grin

I recently had two collared doves botn in my privet bush. I loved watching them grow, surprisingly quickly. I called them bawbag and scrotum. They look like testicles when they young.

Gavellar · 02/07/2021 04:31

I love you, please be my friend. I love pigeons too and call the ones I feed my duckies Grin

Macncheeseballs · 02/07/2021 07:37

I like pigeons too, however I am sure young children (as well as cats/dogs and other animals) have been chasing them for centuries the world over, I'm not sure it's done them much harm?!

Mydogisagentleman · 02/07/2021 08:14

They aren’t quite as bad as gulls but not far off.
About an hour ago, I watched a threesome on one of my neighbours roof.
Poor blackbird was caught in the middle and kept flying up in the air, settling down and the shagging began again.
I saw four episodes of shag, fly, shag, fly… before blackbird dad flew away

skybluee · 02/07/2021 08:55

I love them.

It's surprising some of the things they've done.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_pigeon

They get a bad rap.

LEMtheoriginal · 02/07/2021 09:23

They taste prrtty good too

AllesAusLiebe · 02/07/2021 09:28

I've loved reading this!

Pigeons are great. I really like them. We're moving house soon and I'll be sad to leave the pair of woodpigeons we have in our garden behind. We also get lots of city pigeons here, too, and DS loves them.

We were in a local park last week and brought some seed for the ducks and geese by the lake. DS decided to give a little to the pigeons and was so happy because they came right up to his feet, when some horrible woman walked past and made a remark about the seed should be for the 'proper birds' and 'why is he feeding the pigeons?'.

Much to my husband's embarrassment, I barked back that he's 2 and a half and has been brought up to show compassion to all animals.

Pedalpushers · 02/07/2021 09:36

I mean, I'm absolutely terrified of all birds, but I'm glad other people like them. I absolutely can't stand kids running after them, it's so horrible.

thebabessavedme · 02/07/2021 09:58

tbh I think half the reason I'm not that keen on them is because I'm jealous that they get to shag far more than I do, they are just constantly having it off, its very blatant and just basically not fair! People feed them and house them and they don't need to work for a living, just get to spend all day having orgies.

And, btw, they are very inelegant plodders, I have a static caravan and you can hear them plodding about all the time (when they are not having sex)
