Possibly relocating to Surrey

We are possibly moving to the UK from ROI and just looking for some advice. Will be working in Surrey, Feltham. Just myself and DH, both early 40's. Will definitely be renting (with pets) We are currently living in a tiny rural village. Would love to move to a nice, medium sized village with shops, cafés, nice walks, etc. Prefer something a little more quiet with a community spirit, rather than buzzing, our children are adults, so not interested in school catchment areas, etc. We have absolutely no idea where to start looking! Was Looking on rightmove and the rental prices are insane compared to what we are currently paying and all the places seem to be in bigger towns. Was really hoping to get a detached house with a nice private garden that is not in an estate within an hour's drive of Feltham. Any advice will be appreciated!

£1k pcm will get you a tiny one bed flat in the sorts of areas people have mentioned. I think you may need to exercise some expectation management!

Merryoldgoat · 30/06/2021 23:38

@TheBeesKnee

Are you going to be on £100k? What on earth is paying that much in Feltham?! Grin
That’s what I thought!!
BIWI · 30/06/2021 23:41

How about this place in Twickenham? . 2 bedrooms, £1795 per month

Merryoldgoat · 30/06/2021 23:45

OP - I would rethink Surrey as driving from Surrey to Felthan every day will such the life from you.

I lived in Teddington (lovely) but moved as I couldn’t afford a house there and I’m in London/Surrey border. The traffic is too much.

I’d suggest staying north of the river in Middlesex.

Teddington, Walton, Shepperton might all suit you.

A salary of £100k will give you around £5.5k a month - more like £5k after pension.

You will probably need a min of £2.5k for your rental so that should be fine to live on provided you don’t have debts/school fees etc.

Merryoldgoat · 30/06/2021 23:47

Sorry - £2k for rental

lawandgin · 30/06/2021 23:52

You are going to struggle to find somewhere that fits your criteria that is an hours drive from Feltham in rush hour. Feltham to Hounslow or Staines can take 45 minutes in the rush hour and each is less than 10 miles from Feltham! The train would open up a lot of Surrey, somewhere along the M3 corridor could work. Prices will be pretty eye-watering though. If money were no object I'd live in Hampton or Richmond.

StaffRepFeistyClub · 01/07/2021 00:05

Shepperton

RosesAndHellebores · 01/07/2021 00:05

Frankly, if you are starting out with no equity, in that area I think £100,000 will be pretty tough going if you are used to a 4 bed detached in a nice area. £100k each may do it. In the areas mentioned you will be hard pressed to find a 4 bed detached for much less than £1m.

Life nearly passed me by.
Never had a reason to hurry.
Then it came to me one day, now I’m

@GirlInterrupted

Your rental budget for what you want does need to be 4k.
The best advice was the apartment advice.
Even a town house would cost 2500 plus

Dannyandsandy · 01/07/2021 05:04

Completely off the point, but why do you rent in Ireland? It’s really unusual unless you live in the city? And house prices are generally very cheap (unless you’re in Dublin of course) in Ireland, especially on 100€k plus salary?

Dannyandsandy · 01/07/2021 05:05

Sorry if that’s nosey, just curious as I’ve never heard of it before! Grin

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 01/07/2021 06:12

Is that £100k joint?

Markesmithh · 01/07/2021 06:22

I hate Surrey, full of absolute wankers (helpful)

Passionfruitpizza · 01/07/2021 06:25

Ashtead is nice and was a bit cheaper than some parts though that was pre pandemic.
There are nice bits of Egham although there are less nice bits too.

OrangeBlossomMacaron · 01/07/2021 08:25

£100k is of course a decent salary, but it won’t go far on the type of house you want, in the type of area you want in Surrey (I live in Surrey in this type of property). It is lovely here though (and not full of wankers as one of the charming posters commented up thread)

CraftyGin · 01/07/2021 08:48

Putting max £2k into Rightmove, there are several 3-bed options in nearby towns.

Sunbury-on-Thames is very close to Feltham and has the vibe that you have described in the OP. Ashford has options too. Shepperton is a good option and an easy drive to Feltham.

Following the train lines out from Feltham, Staines-upon-Thames, Egham, Wraysbury, Chertsey, Addlestone.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 01/07/2021 08:56

Chertsey and Addlestone aren’t all that pleasant, so might be a bit cheaper, but not somewhere you’d want to be.

Staines and Egham might be a better bet.

Spicedgingerbreadlatte83 · 01/07/2021 09:01

I work in Feltham (really wish I made 100k but that’s beside the point). Just wanted to echo previous posters re the traffic because as someone else said if I leave the house at 7 I get to work at 25 past but if I leave at 7.10 it can take 45 minutes/an hour on bad days. I’m the other side of the river so I have to go through Hampton Court every morning and over the bridge- this is best avoided ! Also I’m in Chessington which definitely isn’t a little village so I’m not sure I’d recommend here if that’s what you’re looking for. I love it here but I was born here so I suspect that’s probably got something to do with it Grin Good luck!

sirfredfredgeorge · 01/07/2021 09:09

Forget about the village, you need to live in suburbia and find a way to public transport or cycle / e-bike or similar to Feltham, the places mentioned in this place will regularly take you hours to drive. And 2k won't get you the detached etc. you want.

You can have a little terraced place in a nice area nearer the river than Feltham, you'll get your walks from the river and parks or drive out, and there's obviously plenty of places with cafes etc.

Notjustanymum · 01/07/2021 09:56

You can rent a 3-bed terraced house in Sunbury from £1550 pcm. Sunbury is quite nice and there is a community spirit there, with events like the regatta, and horse racing at Kempton Park...

unfortunateevents · 01/07/2021 15:49

If you are living in rural Ireland in a 4-bed detached with garden for 600 euros you must be living quite out in the sticks. I think you need to be prepared that life anywhere in Surrey is going to be quite different on any budget that you can afford, even on what is a decent salary. Have you spent much time in Feltham or surrounds?

looptheloopinahulahoop · 01/07/2021 15:54

@ShitPoetryClub

I was going to say Bagshot but I think it's too far away.
30 mins drive along the A30? I don't know what the house prices are like there though.
looptheloopinahulahoop · 01/07/2021 15:58

OK maybe not 30 minutes, I was judging it on a Sunday so probably not wholly representative of rush hour, though I don't think the M3 is that busy on a weekday these days. Might be worth investigating the train.

unfortunateevents · 01/07/2021 17:49

There's a four bed detached to rent in Bagshot - for £3.5k! That's Bagshot. If you are hoping for about £1-1.2k that will get you a two bed flat. I think it might be time to embrace the new job as a whole new lifestyle? So maybe something more suburban - and smaller - frees up some money for fun and travel (hopefully!) and easy access to restaurants, etc?
