Neighbour drilling!

Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 15:29

I’m absolutely demented. My neighbour (other street but backs onto us) has workers round drilling up a big concrete base under their decking. No warning at all. My head is banging and I’m struggling to concentrate enough to work!! I get these things have to be done but some word of warning would have been nice or do people just not bother anymore!?? So pissed off!

What radius around the house would you like them to warn?

Would you expect them not to do it if you said “actually please don’t”?

Schrutesbeets · 30/06/2021 15:32

Yabu to expect him to tell every house that borders his. He may well have informed his direct NDNs but even then I probably wouldn't expect that either.

SnarkyBag · 30/06/2021 15:32

Meh if it’s a one off job I wouldn’t expect a warning and I’m completely noise averse!

Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 15:33

Of course I wouldn’t expect them not to do it. However I could have organised going into work if I’d known. They’ve came round and parked their vans all over our street so would have known it would have caused disruption.

It’s at least three days drilling.

You know to go into the office tomorrow then 😅

ScienceSensibility · 30/06/2021 15:35

I’m with you, OP.

For such a noisy job, I would always offer a warning, plus let neighbours know how long it is likely to last.

You could then plan to work elsewhere, if possible, plan your phone calls etc.

Today though, selfishness seems to rule the roost and so many people have no care for good manners whatsoever.

Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 15:38

Its just frustrating there’s no consideration for anyone. If I went over and totally prevented them from working I’d be in the wrong to the fact they’re stopping me from working doesn’t seem to matter. I could have made other plans! I’ve got loads to do and I’ve got nothing done as I can’t concentrate!

TBH it would not enter my head to inform neighbours we were having work done unless it would directly affect their property or i knew they had a special circumstance i.e. new baby.

I might apologise in passing if I saw them but we all have to put up with things from our neighbours/utility companies/ local business.

I would find it really odd if someone informed me of work being done.

Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 15:43

See I would want to let people know if it was going to be that noisy. Especially with so many people working from home. It’s driving me insane it’s that loud!

Before my recent experiences I would let people know so they can plan. But people do not think like this OP.

LakieLady · 30/06/2021 15:52

Until last week, I endured 3 months of drilling, builders lorries, diggers, cement mixers etc at a house barely 50 yards away.

It never crossed my mind that they should have warned me, not that I could have done anything about, because we're still only allowed in the office for a few very specific reasons.

It was hellish, but I just gritted my teeth and got on with it.

There is consideration though? Being that they're doing it during working hours and not during the evenings/weekends.
ineedaholidayandwine · 30/06/2021 15:54

I agree OP a heads up would be nice.
At our old house we were on a small crescent so i posted a note through all the houses to warn we were having a drive done which meant breaking concreate and cutting blocks, gave them start and end date plus estimated daytime work hours

Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 15:55

We’ve literally had months of roadworks going on behind us which was bad. That’s ended early this week and now this. Just seems like common courtesy has gone out the window and it’s every man for himself. Why wouldn’t you warn your neighbours if you’re going to be disrupting them so much? I can’t understand why you wouldn’t.

OP posts:
Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 15:56

Definitely no consideration. They would be paying overtime if it was any other time of the week.

OP posts:
Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 15:57

That was for @Senorasurf

OP posts:
Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 15:58

This literally two car lengths away from my house so I don’t think it’s unreasonable for some prior warning.

OP posts:
Icantstopeatinglol · 30/06/2021 16:03

@ineedaholidayandwine see that’s what I think is reasonable. Obviously these things need doing but just some consideration for others will make things a bit easier for everyone.

We had four months of hell from our neighbours attached building refurb Sad My DH bought us both Soundcore Life Q20 noise cancelling Bluetooth headphones from Amazon. Best £50 spent could hear conference calls linked to work iPhone etc but really minimised the horrendous drilling.

ineedaholidayandwine · 30/06/2021 16:27

I agree, the house next door was gutted and refitted last summer so we also had a nightmare trying to work. They also cut into brick to fit patio doors but didn't give us a heads up and as a result my laundry got covered in brick dust, resulting in me frantically running down the garden grabbing clothes

GlassOnTheLawn · 30/06/2021 17:12

It’s frustrating but part of life. Road works, extensions, loft conversions, neighbours who enjoy woodwork and power tools!

I’m guessing the drilling won’t last much longer.

Canigooutyet · 30/06/2021 17:25

3am we had work men show up. They loudly took up whatever metal things they had to. Had loud calls. Loud beep beep beep as vans reversed. Loud talking until around 6am when deliveries, aircon systems and street cleaners start.

Would have really appreciated a heads up on that one as I could have sorted myself out so I could sleep.

Not sure why those who wfh haven't even requested headphones from their employers or bought them by now. Outside noise can be unpredictable.

Icantstopeatinglol · 01/07/2021 17:00

@Canigooutyet I have headphones but that doesn’t help avoid the noise from concrete being drilled. I’d need noise cancelling headphones for that and work definitely don’t supply these for a general office job.
