I want to delete Facebook but….

I’ve applied for ‘my dream job’. Would it look odd if I deleted my social media? (Yes vote) I’m in isolation with DS6 as his class bubble ‘burst’ and found myself wasting so much time on Facebook. I also spend more money as I buy stuff advertised on there, have been let down by a few people I’d like to delete and generally spending more time watching people decorate biscuits than is necessary.
If I delete, do you think it would make potential new employer suspicious? The application deadline was last week and really want this job (civil service) TIA

I don't have FB. I don't think this makes me unemployable!

covidcloser · 29/06/2021 21:48

I have tried but I just cannot see the connection at all. Lots of people don't have Facebook.

outofservice · 29/06/2021 21:53

Ok, I’m not sure why I thought of it. Just popped into my mind. I’ve nothing much to hide. I’m a bit sweary but not controversial. The cricketer who lost his place because of things he put on social media when he was young might have made me wonder.

I got rid of fb a month ago. Best thing I ever did. I don't think it makes you unemployable, why would they judge you for having no online life? They may prefer that! I'm sure they won't use that as a reason to turn you down OP. Best of luck Flowers

SprinklesMcDoodles · 29/06/2021 21:55

Just deactivate it and you can go back to it later if you want. The civil device won’t trawl for you on social media.

PTW1234 · 29/06/2021 21:57

It was the best decision I made.

Macncheeseballs · 29/06/2021 21:59

Surely you know if you've ever posted anything suspect, the cricketer guy you mentioned posted some right dodgy stuff

Billandben444 · 29/06/2021 21:59

You mean that it might look suspicious that you've deleted fb right now just before the job interview? Can they find that out though? If you think it might be an issue then perhaps wait until afterwards to do it.

worktrip · 29/06/2021 22:04

Put all your settings to friends only or 'just me' and trim your friend to close friends and family.

Sunny4876 · 29/06/2021 22:09

Got rid of it in February, best thing I ever did so you are not being unreasonable in that respect.I know what you mean about the timing, ut if the employer were to check and not find you, they have no way of knowing if you deleted this week, last year or had never joined at all.
Good luck for the job Flowers

Sunfla · 29/06/2021 22:10

Nope. Most the time I can't be found on FB because of my settings (because of my job). I only change that when I'd like to be found once in a blue moon. Delete it if it will make you more productive.

TrickorTreacle · 29/06/2021 22:13

Keep your FB account but just don't post on it very often. Then any HR department that finds you knows that you're on there but they'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel to find a reason to get rid of you because you hardly post on there.

I post probably once every 3 or 4 months. I don't find FB that interesting.

ChippyTea16 · 29/06/2021 22:13

Absolutely delete it. Is your profile public? If not change it to friends only so your employees can’t see anything anyway. I deleted mine a year ago and haven’t missed it at all. Best decision I made!

Slothbynameandnature · 29/06/2021 22:17

I'm not on FB, Twitter ... I waste all my time on MN!

MsMeNz · 29/06/2021 22:17

I have no LinkedIn in an a field where everyone else seems to and my FB.page is under a different name work don't know me by. So I'm basically a social media ghost to them. Only time it's ever come up is when I'm recuiting ppl and they mention they couldn't find me in LinkedIn and I amaze them with the fact I don't play that game. And that's that 🤷 I've never not got a job because of that.

Arrierttyclock · 29/06/2021 22:19

If you delete the app your profile still remains so if an employer was to look for you you'd still come up.

MrsFin · 29/06/2021 22:23

You could always lock your FB account so that only the people you want to see it can see it.

Redyellowpink · 29/06/2021 22:23

That's not how the civil service recruit. They use the success profiles which have nothing to do with facebook.

TheLeadbetterLife · 29/06/2021 22:23

I've never had Facebook, it's never come up or been a factor in any job application. Why would it? It's not mandatory to use social media and lots of people don't. I don't even bother with LinkedIn (the "networks" on there are all bollocks anyway and so many people don't keep their profiles up to date).

Redyellowpink · 29/06/2021 22:23

Good luck with the job!

Heyyeahyouwiththesadface · 29/06/2021 22:23

I came of FB 3 or 4 years ago. It was life changing. No more having to like birthday photos of kids I’ve never met or pictures of them in their uniform on their first day of school. No more ‘liking’ people’s decorating choices or baking efforts. It’s brill Grin

Heyyeahyouwiththesadface · 29/06/2021 22:24

#Off

outofservice · 29/06/2021 22:24

Thank you. I’ve deactivated my account (after a quick glance at a lovely dress for £45 I quite liked). I realised I have a few friends with different names on there and my settings were private so not much to see if any employer had the time or inclination to look. When I pick up my phone, I automatically press Facebook, it’s like an addiction!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/06/2021 22:57

I deleted in 2012 after finding myself ducking into a shop to avoid a FB “friend” from school. I initially deactivated it, had itchy fingers for about a week, then it was like I forgot about it completely, so I deleted it permanently. I also deleted LinkedIn.

Panaesthesia · 29/06/2021 23:00

You do sound quite addicted, and coming off would be good for you.

No, employers don't look for your Facebook account, it isn't 2006 any more. It's very unfashionable, a haven for boomer relatives and those who share minion memes about how it's Wine O'Clock.
