Was this cashier rude?

In a supermarket earlier today I was queuing to pay. There was one woman in front of me in the queue already loading her items onto the checkout and I was waiting behind the marked line on the floor behind her.

The cashier shouted across to me "madam can you get behind that line please!" In a very officious tone and I said "I am behind the line". She then looked exasperated and said "you need to get behind the next line you're blocking the walkway!" It was early this morning and no one was trying to get past but I moved to the next line. The way the lines are on the floor is that they are in a "corridor" type space before the aisles start if you know what I mean? But I mean it begs the question of why they have lines on the floor if they don't want people to stand there. Anyway I didn't say anything else I just moved back to the next line but I was riled by her headmistress type tone.

As the customer in front was packing she gestured for me to move forwards and I put a divider on the conveyer belt as some of the previous customers items were still on there and I started loading on my shopping. The cashier then said "just load your shopping madam!" I was confused because that's exactly what I was doing, and thought she wanted me to stop so I asked "what? Carry on loading?" And she said "just load your shopping!" She then grabbed the divider from the checkout, slammed it down on the side and said "load your shopping without the divider, that's what I'm trying to tell you!" She was quite angry. At this point I snapped back "how am I supposed to know you don't want me to use a divider, if that's what you're trying to say you need to say don't use a divider!" She then harumphed and was silent.

I hate any kind of confrontation and the whole thing left me confused. I wanted to complain but then I was worried she would spin a different tale so I decided to leave it but it shook me TBH. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Should I complain?

@InTheNightGarter

I think I will complain about her. I did get her name from the name tag so next time I'm in I'm going to tell customer services what happened. I would hate to think she would try and bully older or vulnerable people this way.
do you have the till receipt? In some stores, they state 'you were served by smiley sue or whatever - clearly in your case grumpy Greta, Even if it's not that overt, there is probably some way of the store checking back.

I work on a checkout. It really pisses me off when people don't use the dividers. Like I'm supposed to guess where your shopping ends and the next customers starts. Bizarre.

She was rude and obnoxious. I’m sure she has customers being awful to her, but that doesn’t give her the right to make you feel crap.

After being barked at once too often, I now use the self-scan. I pack as I go along, which makes it quicker for me and I don’t have to put up with being barked at by cashiers. Win, win for me.

This happened to me in M,and S last December. I have not shopped there since. Shouting at me as customer ahead was giving out. Please use markers there was none there. I was in distance..i run a retail shop. Assistant was very rude. Saw the manager on way out and complained. He said to me we only have markings on every second till. Please ring head office if you wish to complain. I have a small retail shop where all notices are visible. I shopped in supermarket 3 tines per week.

I've had loads of instances where I've been spoken to like this since covid. Barked at for not standing in the right place or not having my trolley the right way etc, I've not actually been back to morrisons since the first lockdown after the way I was ordered around, as though I should just know what they wanted me to do. The fact that each shop has different rules doesn't help.

I’ve worked in retail at a number of places and I know how rude customers can be, so I’m always respectful to staff.

My local Tesco self-check out assistants do annoy me though. They don’t tell you when a till is free, even when they’re just standing there. Fine, I can deal with that and will just keep a look out for a free one, but sometimes I ask if a till is available and they say yes, and then when I get to it, it’s not working and they then get annoyed with me.

I find the Asda self- out assistants are much more engaged even when they’re busy.

Don’t have a Lidl in my town but when I do go, there’s anyone at self-check out.
