Lazy journalism - tabloids and MN

Anyone becoming more hesitant to post threads on here just in case it ends up in the DM, Sun or Mirror? Yes it’s an open forum on the internet but it just seems to be happening so much more often now. A lot of people come here for advice and support and these journalists use their misery as stories.

I see a thread and become a bit interested and then a little while later it’s pulled from MN because it’s made the newspaper. I definitely don’t post serious stuff anymore, just things like what do you think of this dress type questions.

No

I don’t think much real journalism exists anymore. It’s click bait, much like AIBU. So I’m not sure you can blame them. I mean that’s their job these days, getting clicks for advertising. That’s all.

I agree, I think it’s very lazy and unfair. I think it must be very difficult for someone who has posted here and ends up in the DM.

Yes, I've see two stories on the Sun online today that I've seen on here in the past couple of days - one being the two kids and £5k a month outgoings one. You can imagine the comments that has for building up on it from the Sun readers Grin

I agree it's annoying but Mumsnet terms of use do state they own the copyright on all contents and can therefore do with them what they like. Which includes selling them to others (which I think they said previously they don't do) or just 'allowing' others to use it as it's promotion/publicity to the mumsnet site. Part of the 'price' for using the site, I guess. Mumsnet terms say this:

Copyright: This Web site and its contents are copyright Mumsnet, all rights reserved. Reproduction of all or any substantial part of the contents in any form is prohibited. No part of the site may be distributed or copied for any commercial purpose without express approval.

Projectflyaway · 29/06/2021 18:15

@SerenityFlowersThey may not sell the stories but I imagine those stories do bring a lot of extra people to MN.

Lazy thread topic considering this is done to death and actually done earlier this afternoon. 🥱

GreenTeaPingPong · 29/06/2021 18:18

I agree sometimes I'm dismayed to see a sensitive thread topic written about in the tabloids. But it's not 'lazy journalists', it's online news sites having much smaller budgets for actual investigative journalism than print newspapers used to have, and they're under huge pressure to produce 'content' - it'll be someone's job to trawl sites like Reddit to find stories. They're in competition with all the other 'clickbait', which unfortunately works and gets the clicks, hence advertising money.

I saw that thread after I posted mine. It’s also a different question. I’m asking if it makes people reluctant to post serious threads.

It couldn’t be that boring if you felt the need to click and comment.
