Selling second hand clothes online

Happieronmyown · 29/06/2021 04:35

Does anyone find this worth while? I have some good stuff to sell & it grieves me to give it away, even to charity. I've looked at various sites to sell it and there are literally thousands of items, at a low price which have been listed for ages.
Factor on the effort of selling them, buying some packaging etc is it really worth the effort?

Occasionally sell bundles on FB market place. It's a bit of a pain and the money isn't really even worth my time answering queries, waiting in for them to come and collect (or not!). Recently 10 items from next for £10 for example. I only sold a couple of items where I was happy with the price received and both were designer handbags .. old but in good condition with original boxes and dust covers.

IncessantNameChanger · 29/06/2021 19:31

I have just realised that my 50p item was reduced by 30% as I had a Bundle discount on with Vinted. So the sake of a pen type dot on a 40p tshirt someone has got a practically new Mini Boden dress amongst my other Boden etc kids stuff for free. I'm disproportionately pissed off as that is two sales in a row on Vinted someone has done this in my first month of selling. At least giving it to charity I'm not going to be left with the bitter feeling of being scammed. I have spent most of the day stewing over it. So that isnt worth a extra few quid. I cant go over my things with a electron microscope but it seems some buyers have all the time in the world to find a reason to get a refund.

I never had this on Ebay in over a decade but with Ebay it's not worth the fees any more.

It's used 6 year old's clothes for £1 or less a item. What do people expect? The tags still on for £35 from Boden for 50p?

Can I just scream here? "Go to primark for your pristine 40p tshirt!!!" 😂😂

Exactly. And I don't give cash to charities very often, only when a friend wants sponsoring. So in a way I feel like giving my good quality used items to charity is sort of making up for it? At least I feel positive about it and I think they make more from their in store sales than I would online.
My £10 for 10 items example, they could probably have got £3 or £4 for each item. It was all from Next last year not worn much.

Could you cancel the sale? Say they have gone missing?
tallduckandhandsome · 30/06/2021 11:34

I have managed to sell new/tagged clothes for the price I paid for them (less ebay fees).

I was thinking of trying Vinted as I have a lot of new clothes to sell.

SapatSea · 30/06/2021 11:36

Depop seems to be the place to sell clothes these days

SpaceRaiders · 30/06/2021 11:40

I did a lot of eBaying when dc were little. It’s changed hugely as a marketplace, it seems some buyers want something for nothing and some sellers over price their items. Coupled with the fact that eBay always sides with the buyer despite there being plenty of scams going, I just couldn’t be bothered with all the hassle. I’ve still got a big sack of clothes that I’m moving from corner to corner, wondering who to pass onto, I may just bite the bullet and list them!

tallduckandhandsome · 30/06/2021 11:44

I always told myself that the first time a buyer scams me is when I stop selling on eBay. Hasn't happened yet but I do send everything via signed for post.

Anyone sold gift cards? I've sold gift vouchers on eBay before before but I'm so worried about scams now. I see websites like cardyard will buy them but take a 15% cut.

roses2 · 30/06/2021 11:46

I look at closed auctions and only sell stuff which goes for £5+ excluding postage. Otherwise it's just not worth the effort. Anything else goes to the charity shop.

I've a load of Timberland and Ralph Lauren clothes which DS has grown out of. These items seem to sell for £2 + postage so I'm sending them to the charity shop instead.

IncessantNameChanger · 30/06/2021 11:46

@tallduckandhandsome in Vinted as soon as I clicked on resolve the issue, hoping to just refund the two marked items, the entire sale was cancelled and all the individual things in the bundle refunded. I didnt know that would happen. If I had known I would have just replied to say I was willing to do a partial refund and let Vinted sort it. But there isnt that option like Ebay. I have brought some right tat of Vinted myself so didnt want to do nothing.

I wish I had just given it to cancer research as they would have got over £30 for it.

I channelled my anger into getting three big bags for the charity shop 😂

Wallpapering · 30/06/2021 11:48

Pre needing money everything went to charity that was before worked in one and see manager taking what fancied for free.

Have sold stuff for peanuts, I no longer do postage as people seem to think I company that can offer free or I making some postage profit, was charging rate set by Royal Mail or couriers.

I no longer put up items for free as even then time wasters so that goes in Charity bin when it’s empty, people dump any crap in it.

Recently sold 5 books which are series for £2 the lot that in excellent condition cost £6.99 to buy

2 bags of kids clothes for £1 again in excellent condition.

The waiting around, time wasting messages or don’t turn up, moaning does my head in

tallduckandhandsome · 30/06/2021 11:50

@IncessantNameChanger sorry I'm new to Vinted. Does this mean they got to keep the clothes and didn't have to send them back to you?! Shock

ChocOrange1 · 30/06/2021 12:55

Kids clothes will sell if they're an expensive brand e.g. Jojo, Boden, Frugi but for a fraction of what you paid.
Maternity clothes will usually sell, people will look online as they don't want to buy new for stuff they'll only wear for a couple of months.

Hoppinggreen · 30/06/2021 12:58

I don’t do it online but there is a 2nd hand boutique near me who takes things for me and gives me 50% of what she gets. She does have designer stuff there but what I give her tends to be Boden, Hush or similar.
The downside is that when I go to collect my money I usually end up buying something instead

Headsshoulderskneesandtoes23 · 30/06/2021 13:51

I sell on vinted and do really well on there.

cakewench · 30/06/2021 14:17

I just filled two bags of either almost new or new with tags branded clothes (M&S, Next, Joe Browns) for charity that I've been 'meaning' to sell on Ebay for easily a year or more. My advice is to only even attempt to sell clothing if it's a brand name or similarly niche.

If you really need the money of course you can try to sell anything, but you'd be making pennies on Asda brands unless you were doing bundles etc. And yes I appreciate that can all add up, but it really depends on what you value your time at and how much the income is needed.

I finally decided my mental health was worth more, as I couldn't deal with the feeling of another job on my head and I'd rather clear out more clutter and donate to a worthy cause than spend hours taking pictures/ answering questions/ dealing with someone who thinks they deserve a refund because it fits funny/ etc.

Yes. I guess I should have asked her if she wanted a partial refund then told her to raise a case. But I didnt know by replying to the problem it just automatically refunded ever item in the multiple bundles.

If I had refunded her via PayPal she could got my cash and my clothes. So I hindsight, it's not for me.

I guess you could refuse to add expensive / new items in with used high street brands. Mind you I was only selling clothes. Or just say everything is satisfactory quality and just do one photo.

Like a plebs I took lots of photos and someone then said it was nothing like the photo. If I had said used condition may show signs of wear, with just one photo I wouldnt exposed myself to this.

I might try that again in a few months. Just bundle things up to under 1kg and say no more combinations or if they do it its going to be just under £5 postage anyway.

Maybe I was just unlucky but I think maybe it was also my fault as I should have said "has been worn so will signs of use"

MyOldBag · 30/06/2021 14:42

I sold on Ebay for 20 or so years. It used to be much easier, more pleasant.

It was also said that the optimum time for ending an auction was Sunday evening, however I never fund that to be true, except for anyone that did the RTDC or MDCC charity auctions where all listings ended on Sundays. My stuff sold for the same price regardless, I tried it out when I had more than one of the same to sell.

I also used Ebid, many other sellers went there when EBay started to go down the pan, and still do. The level of help you get from the owners is far superior to the rubbish you get from the Ebay support.

Taking a break now due to ridiculous buyers and the annoying payment system on Ebay and am rather interested in VInted, will also be returning to Ebid after a break.

Ebay is not what it was, they have been treating sellers like crap for too long and allowing chancers to get away with it.

Annoying details you need to fill in when listing - they are the bits that buyers look for allegedly. If sellers would put measurements of clothing in listings they would sell more. Lazy sellers with just a crappy photo or two are less likely to make a sale if there is a description that reads 'Next dress, 12, worn once'.

So, if you plan to sell, you do need to tell people about the items. If you can't be arsed then give it to charity. Measurements, make, fabric type, colour are the minimum, and answer questions if you are asked because a lot of people don't.

lolacola77 · 30/06/2021 14:49

I decided to get rid of all the clothes that I know I'll never wear/fit into again. I hate eBay so have been using Vinted. I love it and the buyer pays postage up front. I've made some decent money.

The charity shops near me are run by bad mannered arseholes so I don't donate anything.
