Chinese buffet at a party

Once restrictions end we are having a party. Various things to celebrate.

It will be family and close friends, timings approx 7-11pm. About 40-50 people. A friend's band will play for a bit.

Instead of getting stressed out with organising the food and putting it all out myself I wanted to get it catered in some way.

The local deli does a lovely spread but I found their quote expensive. A friend had an Indian curry buffet a few years ago and it worked well!

DH has suggested Chinese food. His favourite.
I have looked in to the cost and it is actually a fairly 'cheap' option, making it doable for us. They even provide plates and cutlery and dish up/serve.

But is it a bit weird to be offered a Chinese buffet at a party? AIBU to think it's not quite right for a party in a hall...
or maybe it's a great idea?!

Daisychaincarrot · 28/06/2021 23:13

Where do I sign up to come please?

jelly79 · 28/06/2021 23:14

I've been to a party with Chinese buffet. Brilliant

therarebear · 28/06/2021 23:15

Holy shit, can I come?!

duckroll · 28/06/2021 23:16

God I would love this

DeflatedGinDrinker · 28/06/2021 23:17

If I arrived to a party in shall expecting picky food (which I love) and got chinese I'd be loving my life. Even better if there was cake after

DeflatedGinDrinker · 28/06/2021 23:17

A hall **

minniemoll · 28/06/2021 23:17

That sounds AMAZING.

poshme · 28/06/2021 23:17

I want to come!

Clearly MN need a meet up which is a Chinese buffet.

whenimwrongiknowimwrong · 28/06/2021 23:18

I also want an invite

MrsFlinch · 28/06/2021 23:19

I knew someone that ‘was’ going to have this at their wedding and thought it was a great idea. Wedding got called off in the end but I should imagine it would have gone down well.

Once restrictions are ended I wouldn’t be bothered if it was self serve tbh I’d just be glad to socialise properly without worrying who’s doing what.
And for a Chinese buffet then I’m game!

motogogo · 28/06/2021 23:20

Sounds good though might be quite expensive.

Percypigg · 28/06/2021 23:21

I'd love it as long as the food was piping hot for the duration of the buffet.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/06/2021 23:21

We often do this albeit on a smaller scale when we have a get together, it's lovely.

EL8888 · 28/06/2021 23:23

I would love this! Go for it. Way better than soggy crisps, vol au vents etc

user1493494961 · 28/06/2021 23:24

I wouldn't enjoy the food.

GreyhoundG1rl · 28/06/2021 23:25

Sounds great.

Haenow · 28/06/2021 23:26

I would love this but would prefer it wasn’t self served because many people are not hygienic and covid has brought this to light.
That said, I’d probably get over it for the sake of a duck spring roll. Grin

BrilliantBetty · 28/06/2021 23:28

Well my DH will be pleased that his idea has received so much approval.

Yes, I have found a restaurant who carer for parties in this way. I'm assuming they use the equipment from their 'Sunday buffet' to keep everything warm.

It is less £ than the nice deli I had approached first. Who seemed to charge extra for an awful lot of essential things. And could only do a cold option. So actually the price suits our budget well. It's not expensive really for providing a hot meal.

Would you prefer a Chinese buffet to an Indian buffet?Perhaps that's a whole thread on it's own.

Chinese buffet definitely’

Nannyamc · 28/06/2021 23:32

Chinese please hate Indian food

VestaTilley · 28/06/2021 23:33

Sounds lovely- but be aware some may not be able to eat it (I’m coeliac and can’t eat from Chinese takeaways because of the soy sauce in everything) and some children may not be keen.

But otherwise it sounds great! I’d have loved it in the days before my diagnosis.

BastardMonkfish · 28/06/2021 23:36

AMAZING
But you'll need to order three times as much food as you would have from the boring old deli so it won't be any cheaper Grin

dudsville · 28/06/2021 23:37

What a great idea!

XiCi · 28/06/2021 23:40

This is the dream, sounds fantastic Smile
Would not be bothered in the slightest if it was self serve
Definitely Chinese over Indian. 100%.
