To think UK residents shouldn't have priority for quarantine-free travel

DH, our kids and I are all British citizens living in an EU country with high vaccination coverage. DH and I have both had 2 jabs and our teenage DD has already had her first.

All the rest of our family including two sets of elderly parents are in the UK and we haven't seen them since the start of the pandemic due to restrictions on travel in both countries.

We were over the moon when the government started talking about quarantine exemptions for fully vaccinated travellers, but now the news is saying this will only be for UK residents. WTAF? People who live in the UK can go on holiday just for fun, but those of us who want to return to see family will have to wait? What if the school holidays are over by the time we can go and we have to wait until Christmas? I could cry.

What is the reason given?

Orf1abc · 28/06/2021 19:34

You're not unreasonable, the same standards should apply to all. But it's a populist policy that will play well with Tory voters.

Would I have to quarantine when coming to your country from the UK? I'm fully vaccinated.

No, you wouldn't.

I don't know and I can't think of one. Maybe I would feel better if I could.

Uk residents may want t to visit their family abroad!

Aprilx · 29/06/2021 08:59

If it makes you feel any better, there are very few UK residents that are off on holiday for fun and most people would say travel is highly restricted.

dreamingbohemian · 29/06/2021 09:07

I would wait and see what gets officially announced. They've floated a hundred different ideas, anything can happen.

MrsClatterbuck · 29/06/2021 09:57

I'm with you on this and have a relative living abroad but not the EU who I need to come over to do with care for another relative. They are double jabbed. Hoping they can come in September but who knows what the rules will be come September. Without covid they would have been over last April/May and we would have had things sorted by now.

I agree unreasonable, assuming it is a vaccine approved in the UK. Not very trusting of that used in China or Russia, for example.
