To ask for an extension for an assessment I have to do as part of a job application?

I'm applying to new jobs in a field where getting an assessment to do is pretty standard. I applied to several jobs and was surprised to hear back from several already. At the moment I have three writing assessments to do and an interview to prepare for. I'm also working full-time.

I have two assessments due on Friday. I do have Wednesday and Thursday off but I feel like I need more time.

WIBU to ask for one of the assessments to get an extended deadline? If so, how should I phrase it? I feel like it's going to look so unprofessional but my work days are 12 hours, I tried to do some of the work on my 15 minute break at work but by the time I sat down with my laptop I didn't have long to actually get into it.

@greyhoundG1rl obviously I didnt mean it should be in someone else time Hmm just that if its a project for a job interview it really shouldn't be taking more than 2-3 hours or so when people applying are already likely to be working full time etc, its an unreasonable expectation

Nah, you're OK. I'd ask the company you're most serious about to see if you can send it on Monday morning.

I've done this before -- even gotten multiple extensions. Most of the people here have no experience in hiring. I can assure you that at the early stages you'll be dealing with either an internal or external recruiter, and that person is interested in placing you in the job if they can. They also understand that you're working on your free time outside your regular full time job, and that in all actuality these writing assessments are a labor law grey area to begin with (as they sometimes turn into unpaid training or work projects).

Some time has passed on this question, but in case anybody else is curious: YES YOU CAN AND SHOULD ASK FOR AN EXTENSION. DON'T SCREW YOURSELF OVER. EMPLOYERS (at least in my experience) HAVE NEVER, EVER MINDED.

...heck, full truth? My last two assessments I turned the assessments in late by about half a day and still got the job. How about them apples?
