To lie about having pets to potential Landlord

So we’ve been stuck on the renting wheel for years and have been in our current home, which we love very much, for 2 1/2 yrs. We took this property under the understanding of a ‘long term’ let but we’ve just found out our Landlord wants to take advantage of the current RIDICULOUS house prices and are selling it from under us. We’re gutted, especially our 9yr old daughter who has friends all along our road that she plays with daily and her school is just a 10 minute walk away. Now we are looking around for an alternative property in our town (where we have family, friends, childcare, daughter’s school etc) and there’s literally NOTHING around. Not even anything unsuitable, just nothing. Started to panic obviously, then low and behold our neighbours 3 doors down told us they’re handing their notice in for their place as they’ve bought a house! It’s identical to our current home and means barely anything has to change. However, we have a large dog and a cat. This Landlady doesn’t allow pets. Now I’ve always left rental properties in perfect (often better!) condition, I’m very clean, tidy and house proud and our pets are completely house trained and never cause any damage.
So bearing in mind we are pretty screwed here with impending homelessness......AIBU to lie about having any pets?

Really great news and also shows that being honest, kind and decent still exists; including your new LLs . Star

Hope you can stay longer. Glad you were honest. Seriously, though, there are pets and there's a big Rottie who slobbers. Far different from a cat or a hamster or fish.

Brilliant news! Am so glad you asked, not only it sets tone on relationship btwn you and landlord but you won’t have stress and worry having to keep dog secret.

So pleased for you

Great news OP

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 30/06/2021 21:26

Great outcome! All the best for your move.

I've been following this as I spent decades in rented homes and always had pets, it is so unfair when there is a blanket ban on pets. I always thing it should be taken on each persons situation.
I am so happy for you, sounds like you have the ideal landlady too, win win!

lockef · 01/07/2021 12:47

Great news, you did the right thing.
Enjoy your new home!

@RottieMum80

*UPDATE* Ok so I took all your comments into consideration and felt it wouldn’t be right or fair to lie. I invited the landlords round for a chat and was honest about the doggo. They were absolutely lovely and saw how I nice I keep the place and wouldn’t have even guessed I had any pets. I reassured them I would keep their property to the same standard and that we’re willing to pay a little more deposit/rent to allay their fears. Good news!! They have agreed to take us on Grin Honesty is the best policy! Thanks for all your comments and opinions Star
Great news! Good luck with your move OP.

Fantastic news congratulations!

I has that problem 3 years ago. I have a cat and I was looking for an apartment for a long time and everybody the same: "no pets, sorry". The last landlord I asked for pets suggested me to throw my cat on the street... that terminated my pacience. The next apartment I liked I say nothing about my cat, it's forbidden by the contract but I don't mind, I'm not going to be a homeless due to stupid people, home is a human right and take account there is a consumer law that determines any "unreasonable" term in any contract is null by right (as forbid any kind of pets in general, for example), if my landlord wanted to fire me due that reason he would have to go to the court with no success guaranteed... But he discover my cat, I am a good tenant, I pay puntual every month and he said "I don't care meanwhile you pay good and take care of the house"

We said no pets because the fencing between our properties isnt 100 percent solid

We found out they had a large dog when it got into my living room jumping up at my pregnant belly

Be upfront your landlord will find out and lying makes you look like one of THOSE tenants , which they indeed turned out to be

However we've got new tenants with cats that they were upfront about

Not your fault, ridiculous new MN stuff!

RedHelenB · 16/11/2022 16:47

How about you offer for them to come and look at your current house so that they see you had by pets isn't detrimental to the state of the property?

Zombie thread - but if you'd RTFT you'd know thats exactly what they did.

Pachilond · 16/11/2022 18:06

I don't know what is a "zombie" thread, I found this forum looking for the question topic in Google.

I didn't read through it, bit great minds obviously think alike on this occasion.

ImPickleRickSpartacus · 16/11/2022 18:51

We had 2 indoor cats that we kept hidden. You won't get away with hiding a dog.
It's worth trying to get references from previous LLs to prove you're a good tenant that leaves a clean property.
