Following some recent incidents and a sense something may escalate I am in urgent need of a cctv system at home.
Main points I need to consider;

  • Has to be wireless and battery operated as it's going in a porch without plugs
  • Must have SD card and or/low cost cloud option
  • It can't be screwed into anything as I'm in rented so I can't get a Ring type doorbell
  • It must be a piece of piss to set up as I am a technophobe
  • Budget is £50

So I know IABU to post here but IAnotBU to be feeling vulnerable currently and need the peace of mind/recording should things kick off
Thank you nest of vipers!

Make sure you comply with GDPR if you put a camera up outside.

DorotheaDiamond · 25/06/2021 12:25

I think you will struggle without fitting at least a screw - would your landlord not allow that?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 25/06/2021 12:40

I don't think you will get something reliable ticking all these requirements. You can get nice small cams for well under 50, but they are not battery operated. Battery operated will not be probably under 50 etc. Any chance of being able to bring a cable through?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 25/06/2021 12:49

You're not going to get reliable & battery-operated for under £50, and you're unlikely to get something that doesn't need to be fixed to the wall... Ring doorbells are fairly easy to fit but even they need screws, and they're still stolen all the time. Ring replace them for that reason.

I'd have a chat to your landlord about fitting one. You'll need a cable and to be able to fix it to your doorframe, but most landlords will be alright about that as long as you make it good at the end.

Ring doorbells are the most popular because they are pretty easy to fit and use, you can get a decent easy-fit version for £89-ish.

You will need to set it up so that it doesn't film over your boundary, or make sure you are in compliance with GDPR.

I'm sorry that you're in this situation and I hope the escalation doesn't happen Flowers

SW1amp · 25/06/2021 12:53

Do you want it as a deterrent or because you’re worried about something happening that you need footage of?

If it’s the latter, nothing you can get for £50 will take good enough footage to be of much use afterwards, nor will anything fitted with a magnet or glue to able to withstand someone who wants to get rid of the evidence once they realise they’ve been filmed

cctvshy · 25/06/2021 13:17

This is the kind of thing I've looked at but I don't know if it's any good. Absolutely no way landlord will let me fit a ring doorbell as it's a upvc door and framed porch.
Deterrent is one element and recording should something happen.

For back ground - it's ex. He has already committed a fairly minor assault on me at the doorstep a couple of months ago that was NFA'd by police due to lack of evidence. Something has happened in the last week (I have no idea what) and he is a seething ball of anger currently so I need something to help keep the peace at drop offs. Police and DV worker have both advised I should get something.

No option of an alternative address or someone being here sadly.

Having something visible with recording I'm certain will cap any incidents as he absolutely will not want hard evidence anywhere. Like most men like this, they can control it when the stakes against them are too high. He will not want a conviction for assault and I absolutely want to protect my children from repeat incidents.

Bit of a long shot but would a wildlife camera work? Something like one of these: www.amazon.co.uk/garden-wildlife-camera/s?k=garden+wildlife+camera&tag=mumsnetforu03-21. We have one for watching hedgehogs in our garden. It was under £50, battery operated (though it churns through them quickly so rechargeable is a must), has an SD card. When it senses motion it will take a picture and then record for about 10 seconds. It could sit on a windowsill if you have one in there to save screwing into the wall?

chompinglettuce · 25/06/2021 13:37

Also forgot to add, really sorry you're experiencing this [Flowers]

cctvshy · 25/06/2021 14:45

@chompinglettuce thanks. I'll look into that. Could be nice for the kids to watch for wildlife too.
I've had over two years of his shenanigans but there's just something in his behaviour that has changed recently and I just don't know why so like very good Girl Scout I want to be prepared!

My ring doorbell is attached to my pvc doorframe with double sided sticky pads, it isn't quite so secure but it records footage to the cloud, so if someone did pinch it they'd be on video.

FixTheBone · 25/06/2021 14:53

If it's just for drop-offs etc, id there anyway you could just film on your phone, or set up an old phone nearby?

foobio · 25/06/2021 15:00

Won't stop it being stolen, but to mount without causing damage, you could use command strips www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LOQMCDM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_FRX27FM92J7ZC5254TTJ?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

cctvshy · 25/06/2021 15:08

I never thought of adhesive pads. I live in a fairly low crime area so it likely won't get nicked. I'm hoping to buy my own property in the autumn and will set up a more robust system then. Me and the children moving into our own home is likely to be another trigger for him as he will be furious I've saved enough despite him withholding maintenance.

Is there a window that overlooks the front door? Our neighbour's have a camera on their inside windowsill which can then be plugged in.

hippidyhiphip · 25/06/2021 15:13

Have you looked at blink cameras? My friend has them. Think they have 2 year battery life, but are closer to the £80 mark.

Sadly not. The porch protrudes out so anything on the living room windowsill wouldn't capture the front door

@cctvshy they're £69.99 in Very at the moment.

chickenyhead · 25/06/2021 15:18

If you have a window at the front, I use this one...
NETVUE Outdoor Security Camera... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CNJLBKN?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Sd card, but needs plugging in. They do a windowsill one too. Great app, no monthly cost.
