To get rid of my facial hair?

Cherrychocchip · 24/06/2021 19:56

I'm in my 40's and have noticed more and more how many soft blonde hairs I have on my face. If I feel it it's dead furry Blush
Doesn't look atrocious to look at me (imo) but if I look closely in the mirror it's a shock!
So to be natural and ignore it or get rid?

@Sarahlou63

It's nonsense that hair grows back with "blunt ends" and becomes stubble. I've been (gently) removing my soft facial hair with a dry razor every couple of weeks for years and I've never had a five o'clock shadow!

My beautician used to do that before lasering, so I thought 'why bother with the laser?"

Bought a Nono, which is great, but can't beat a good dry shave occasionally!

@RickiTarr thank you for your kindness in responding. I would have to shave multiple times in the day, and get bad rashes there that hurt. I’m already on Mirena for medical reasons so definitely cannot change contraception. I’ve learnt to put a happy face on, I’m blessed to have a loving and accepting husband and children so I’m very lucky.

I had a dermaplaning facial a year ago, the regrowth is slow. Mine is still clear except the stubborn chin hairs that need maintaining.

Brunettes with a moustache- what do you do?!

Lydia777 · 25/06/2021 20:56

Despite what so many people think, you can shave it/dermaplane it. It is finally seen as more mainstream but I have been doing it for years and years. Don't believe the old wives tale that it grows back thicker - that's something that the beauty therapists will tell you but it isn't true.

I am brunette so have darker hair. After having dd I had a lot of facial hair & it was actually making me depressed. I used a razor but in my experience it did make it worse! Last week I bought a Braun SE810 Face Epilator and Facial Cleansing Brush because it was on special offer and genuinely it's the best thing I've bought! It wasn't that painful and a week later I have no regrowth but was having to use a razor every day.

I'm going to go against the flow here, I wouldn't recommend that Flawless thing. I bought one a couple of weeks ago and am now waiting for the stubbly bits on my upper lip to grow back out so I can go back to waxing them. It's driving me nuts Sad

@Saltandvinegar86 facial wax strips. Nair are better than veet but veet have the little soothing wipes in their boxes,

Word of warning, rub a very small amount of talc over the area first, really rub it on. That way the strips will stick to the hair and not rip the skin off. I know a few people who have ended up with upper lip rash/nasty pus filled little spots by using the strips straight on the skin with no talc.
Warm the strips between your palms so you can separate them but then rest them, sticky side up, on the edge of the cool sink for a couple of mins so they aren’t too gooey when you press them onto your face.

I shave it, then do IPL every 4-6 weeks (Lumea). At the beginning it needed to be shaved every 10-14 days, Lumea every 2 weeks without fail, but after a year I can go 4 weeks without noticing the regrowth. I was scared about using a razor, but it hasn't actually grown back thicker, if anything the hair is lighter.

I'm the same as @Xanadu7 in that my chin and neck hairs (or should I call it a beard?) grow back within hours. Did the whole area this morning, it's black again. I do a combination of shaving + Lumea, occasional bleaching but that irritates my skin even more. I've learnt to just not care because a man wouldn't be ashamed of it. I work in a professional, camera-facing role and haven't had one observation, ever.

I hope they can readjust medication by the next review, because it's getting worse lately. I'm eating more and more because of it, so I'm sure that's not helping either...

I would ask the GP to refer you for insulin tests not just fasting glucose. Try avoiding refined white carbs and added sugars, no fruit juice, no dried fruit or tropical fruit, just low sugar berries for sweet food and have protein at each meal with healthy fat and complex carbs, and see if the hair growth slows overnight. Do this for three weeks and if you notice a reduction then blood sugar balance is key to improving symptoms by lowering insulin levels. It is a fat storage hormone if it is released in excess, plus it can imbalance the ovaries leading to 'free' testosterone which can then stimulate androgens and lead to hair growth. Daily exercise such as a half hour walk a day or more will help. I reversed my PCOS with a strict regime, it is a metabolic imbalance and I didn't want to be overweight and hairy so I exercised, stopped being vegetarian which is a high carb diet and for PCOS unhelpful in my opinion and have to live on my plan to ensure balance is maintained. If I returned to a high sugar, inactive lifestyle it would all return. Sadly stress was a big part of my picture which spikes blood sugar so I have to include Mindfulness, Forest Bathing, Pilates to keep stress in check. Good luck you can do it !
