My dogs barking

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 23/06/2021 19:06

My dogs bark. They only bark when people go past the house. Or if people are standing outside the house winding them up. I know this as I have cameras.

My neighbours have complained. They complained last week about this but my dog was out with me so it can’t have been my dog.

My dogs don’t bark late at night as I have kids and they’re asleep. I’m a single parent so they’re never alone at night as I’m here with the children.

My dogs are literally never left for more than a few hours due to the nature of my job. They don’t have separation anxiety. They aren’t bored. They are extremely well trained. They just bark when they can see or hear people go by the house.

I’m getting constantly nagged at and was previously reported for this. The man from the council said probably malicious and not to worry. That was months and months ago.

Are my dogs expected to never ever bark? Surely, surely some barking is not unreasonable? I can’t control who walks past and when.

From my cameras I know today has been a particularly busy day on out street though.

@Undisclosedlocation

Keep the dogs out of access of the front window, keep the radio on to muffle the noise of people outside and see what difference that makes.

It is absolutely possible to train dogs not to bark, or to manage them in such a way to stop it through lack of stimulus. Just assuming that your neighbours should suck up their noise is unreasonable imo

yeah keeping mine away from the front of the house and having the radio or tv on definitely helps. Some dogs are just prone to be more barky than others and I think if there's more than one dog they can set each other off.
proopher · 23/06/2021 19:48

I don't think 'dogs bark' is an excuse. None of the dogs I've had have barked other than in exceptional circumstances like fear or pain, because they were trained not to when they were puppies.

SueSaid · 23/06/2021 19:48

Op, kids are noisy too but imagine if you lived next to someone whose dc shouted all day every day. It is torture listening to a dog yapping constantly. Have you tried a muzzle? They can still bark but not quite as easily.

Dogs should bark occasionally, not constantly. You need to pay for a trainer and address it.

Gothichouse40 · 23/06/2021 19:53

I actually cannot go into my garden as neighbours dog barks for hours on end. I cannot have a conversation with anyone at my door as dog constantly barks. I being on the receiving end understand how hellish it is, you dread going out your door. If you have visitors, they are startled by the dog, in particular small children. Why are so many dog owners oblivious to this? We have THREE dogs in our street, all in different houses who bark constantly. It gets very wearing. I don't know if the owners are deaf, oblivious or just don't give a s*t about other people. Im actually glad when it rains.

@damnthisvirusandmarriage

But dogs bark?!
Yes, and it's incredibly annoying to have to listen to it.
CatalinaCasesolver · 23/06/2021 19:56

You poor neighbours!

ShortHamstrings · 23/06/2021 19:56

Nightmare for your neighbours. We used to live next door to someone who had 2 dogs, one was quiet and one barked loads, whenever anyone walks past or came to the door.

Believe it or not, this does disturb your neighbours.

Imagine if they played loud music every time someone walked by?

You should do the decent thing and work out a way to minimise it.

Susannahmoody · 23/06/2021 19:58

I'm your neighbour.

Me and my husband can't work because every time someone walks past your house (ours too, BTW!!) the dog goes ballistic.

I called the police last week and they came to see you. Please take note.

Susannahmoody · 23/06/2021 20:00

Imagine if they played loud music every time someone walked by?

^
This is my next step if they don't stop barking. Speakers outside, Iron Maiden blasted out LOUD every time they come out of the house. Every single time. Home from work??? Maiden. Digging the garden. MAIDEN!!

StoneofDestiny · 23/06/2021 20:00

but dogs bark?,

Geez

But people shout! But it should be a rarity, only in exceptional circumstances, if necessary and not as a norm. Try living next to someone who shouted so loud you heard them every time someone used the pavement near you.

StoneofDestiny · 23/06/2021 20:03

I'm your neighbour

Now it gets really interesting.........

MaleficentsCrow · 23/06/2021 20:04

Yes dogs bark, but you have to limit it best you can.

I have a mastiff he barks when people walk by or come to the door.

I have restricted his view to the window, he now can't see people walking past. He does not bark.

If I go out he's in the kitchen with the radio on. He can not see anyone so does not bark. I have a large kitchen diner he's fine in there.

If someone comes to the door I tell him not to bark, he stops or if I'm expecting a delivery like food, I put him in the kitchen and I wait by the front door to avoid the door knock, door bell barking. He does not bark then.

I've never had a noise complaint about him. I can't stand him just barking so I limit it.

imaginethemdragons · 23/06/2021 20:05

Are you my mums neighbours?

My mum, about 7 or 8 of her neighbours are gathering evidence (recordings, film) regarding dogs in one property barking constantly and throwing themselves at the fence in the garden when neighbours are in their own gardens.

They have each phoned up numerous times over months and months to complain to environmental services. Advised to gather evidence.

The effect on these neighbours is profound because of these dogs.
Anxiety levels are very high. They can’t sleep, can’t go into their own gardens, can’t walk past, can’t relax or settle.
The owner is completely oblivious. Will not accept that there is a problem when the neighbours have approached and asked her politely to do something about her barking dogs, she just says “dogs bark”.

They are about to be removed from her.

Have some awareness and consideration. You have had previous complaints, there are now more complaints. This IS a problem. You need to sort it.

aggathapanthus · 23/06/2021 20:09

Our neighbours’ dog barks when they’re out every (bloody) day for “just a few hours”. Drives me, the people the other side and the 3 sets behind round the bend (we have a dog, as does one of the behind neighbours).

YAU

FindingMeno · 23/06/2021 20:10

Our dog only barks when someone comes into our garden. He is supposed to bark then.
He doesn't bark when people walk past.
Plenty of people are glad for the security of a dog alerting them to someone's presence on their property, and that surely must be reasonable.
Barking at everyone who walks past should be stopped.

RocksOnTheHill · 23/06/2021 20:12

Yeah, sorry I have to agree with PP. Ours neighbour's dog barks whenever anyone goes past the window, if there's food in view, if they're being ignored and when they play with it in the garden. This happens anytime from 5.45am to 11pm. It drives us insane and they've aggressively said, so what, dogs bark. I hadn't realised I could complain to the council though. Thanks.

Fartymcfart · 23/06/2021 20:13

Currently sat here listening to a dog bark which has barked all bloody day (I work from home, so have been here). They do nothing to stop it.

So you are completely unreasonable

HalzTangz · 23/06/2021 20:23

Why are your dogs barking when someone walks past, surely they should only be reacting if someone knocks the door. They can't be as trained as you say.

I have dogs and they have never barked at people walking by, only bark for seconds if someone knocks on the door

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 23/06/2021 20:23

Hearing a dog bark every time someone walks past is absolutely awful. I think dog owners don't realise the impact this can have on neighbours.

It is an annoying thing and you should be able to keep them quiet, ie. keep them away from being able to see people walking past the house while you aren't there.

Rosebel · 23/06/2021 20:26

Our next door neighbours dog barks a lot and it's incredibly annoying. I wouldn't and never have complained but I know the people on the other side have.
Can you confine your dog to the back rooms of your house so they're less aware of people walking by? Does he stop barking if you tell him to?
You say he's only left for a few hours but if someone is home (and trying to get their baby to nap) it can feel like a bloody long time.
However if your neighbour is complaining about the dog when it's not there then they are just being difficult so ignore them.

Douchebaggette · 23/06/2021 20:27

Window film. Honestly. Cheap, easy to apply, comes off again pretty easily, still lets light in but stops dogs seeing out.

HalzTangz · 23/06/2021 20:27

Barking can be trained, using the work quiet and standing Infront of the dog every time they bark. Give them a treat when they stop. They will soon learn

jasjas1973 · 23/06/2021 20:30

How did you do this without using aversive techniques making your dog afraid of you?

Barking is often attention seeking and from youngsters they were taught simple commands not to bark at all and everything, a reward when they obeyed.
One was a rescue puppy and was always a bit fearful, the other was a happy go luck bitch that took everything in her stride, very clever and would pick up tricks like running up/down ladders, playing dead, twirls etc broke my heart when she died young, never had another.

MaleficentsCrow · 23/06/2021 20:32

I just stood Infront of mine with the shush hand signal. Finger over mouth, and gave him a treat when he stopped barking.

Repeat repeat repeat, now I just go "shh" and put my finger on my lips and he's quiet 🤷🏻‍♀️ no shouting nothing. Takes like a second.

Dog listens better than the 6 year old 🤣

Mykittensmittens · 23/06/2021 20:33

We live next door to a dog. It’s categorically ‘not his fault’ Hmm as he has ‘issues’. Apparently I should tolerate his ‘issues’ as dogs do this.

He barks at planes and motorbikes. And other dogs. Now when a plane goes over I find myself going ‘here we go….3…2…1… YAP YAP YAP’ it drives me nuts.

A previous PP is spot on. Imagine every time something ‘set me off’ I blew a whistle. A very loud shrieking whistle. Sooner or later you’d be mighty pissed off as my neighbour.

I don’t dispute dogs bark but please remember other people didn’t choose to have dogs you did. Other people shouldn’t have their lives invaded by them whatsoever.
