Is this racist

So DS says some boys at school are picking on him - he's Year 8. Today they had to move places in the classroom and he's ended up beside these 2 'mean' boys. They said to him 'just shut up and go back to Ireland to eat your potatoes'. I think that's racist - or what do you think.

YABU - not racist
YANBU - racist

Are there two threads with "Southern Ireland" now. 🤣 At least the vaccine seems to be working. 💪

doublemonkey · 24/06/2021 21:41

For clarity I feel I should point out what is probably confusing Pixxie7 is the fact that Ireland is part of the British Isles.

MumofSpud · 24/06/2021 21:42

Yes it is 100% racist - the boys need to be dealt with by the school

doublemonkey · 24/06/2021 21:44

@Pixxie7

@ doublemonkey that is offensive and unnecessary. I am not stupid, however rising to the bait of some of you probably is. Read the whole thread before making personal comments.
I don't need to read the whole thread nor consult Wikipedea to know that my country is not in Britain. Many people have tried to politely correct you but you've doubled down on your dumb comments.
MurielSpriggs · 24/06/2021 21:45

Ireland is part of the British Isles.

British Isles?? Shock

You're in trouble too I'm afraid!

EmeraldShamrock · 24/06/2021 21:45

I feel I should point out what is probably confusing Pixxie7 is the fact that Ireland is part of the British Isles. Yes but no I don't think that is the reason Pixxie7 is confused.

EmeraldShamrock · 24/06/2021 21:46

Forgot my Hmm face.

wowhie · 24/06/2021 21:47

@Pixxie7 you replied to my post

"Ireland is not part of the UK, it's a separate country."

with check Wikipedia.

What am I supposed to be checking? C'mon prove you're not an idiot!

wowhie · 24/06/2021 21:47

or an eejit!

doublemonkey · 24/06/2021 21:48

@MurielSpriggs

Really? Please explain!
MurielSpriggs · 24/06/2021 21:49

I'm going to step to Pixxie's defence here. The politics of the island of Ireland, its history and the rather confusing sensitivity around names is (rightly or wrongly) of as much interest to most people in GB as the nonsense of brexit politics is to the rest of the world.

And to be honest is of no relevance at all to the subject of the thread!

Some in Ireland would strongly object to their landmass being labeled "British". Especially by the British! It's a very loaded word, and it might be geographically accurate, but it's a sensitive point.

doublemonkey · 24/06/2021 22:03

@MurielSpriggs - right! thought I'd done a spelling mistake or something 😉.

I don't expect anyone to know or understand very much at all about Ireland's politics or history but I would expect a British person to know what parts actually constitute their own country.
LizzieW1969 · 24/06/2021 22:07

@doublemonkey

Exactly, especially as it’s been constantly in the news over the last few years, as a central part of the Brexit negotiations.

Knowledge of the politics or the history of ireland is not required to know that Ireland is not in the UK. I would think pretty basic primary school knowledge of the geography of their own country would tell any British person that the UK consists of Scotland, Northern Ireland,Wales and England. Throw in another smidgeen of European geography to know that the two closest neighbours are Ireland and France.

If the education system is so bad in the UK that they don't have those very basic facts about tjeir own country's geography, then they are really on dire straits.

And as for the assertion by @doublemonkey that the source of confusion is the fact that ireland is part of the British Isles, would you also lay claim to British Colombia just because it has the word British in its name?

And a seahorse is not actually a horse! Unfortunately I've met many people who were confused by the fact that Ireland is a part of the British Isles. Make of that what you will.

Despite growing up during the height of the IRA campaigns- and being evacuated from a cinema due to a credible bomb threat- I didn't even know that Northern Ireland was part of the UK until I was in my 20s (and did some reading for myself). I don't recall learning any Geography other than about volcanoes and hurricanes.

I think you mean the Celtic Isles.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 24/06/2021 22:18

@NeverNotChasingDreams - sad state of affairs.

doublemonkey · 24/06/2021 22:24

When I came to the UK quite some time ago now people used to ask 'What part of Ireland are you from?' and I'd happily reply 'County x' and they'd say but what part of Ireland is that? and I'd say it's near Dublin, and they'd say 'but what part of Ireland is that? and I finally realised they didn't give a fuck where I was from they just wanted know Northern Ireland or Southern Ireland because after all those are the only two parts of Ireland.

I copped on eventually and responded to subsequent questions by telling people that I was from Eastern Ireland. The enjoyment from watching people try to get their heads around that never gets old.😂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/06/2021 22:28

Ok. Since two threads descended into this, I have to ask😂
Is this that geographically the island named Ireland is part of the isles, but the Republic of Ireland, aka Ireland, is politically seperate?

Kind of like how central european countries keep being called Eastern Europe, unless they speak the cool west languages?

MurielSpriggs · 24/06/2021 22:32

I finally realised they didn't give a fuck where I was from they just wanted know Northern Ireland or Southern Ireland because after all those are the only two parts of Ireland.

You were dealing with the intellectual elite there! They actually knew that there are two countries on the island and the political significance of that.
