I wasn’t told a time when I need to start fasting does anyone know when it needs to be?! My appointment is at 8.30am. Thanks!

It's usually 8 hours before

Ragoo · 21/06/2021 19:40

I had mine at 9am and was asked to fast from midnight

Summersun2020 · 21/06/2021 19:41

From midnight tonight. Water or black tea/coffee is fine.

xsjrx · 21/06/2021 19:42

Mines is next Monday and I've been told to fast from 12am night before and only allowed water next day....I can't imagine staying up that late these days 🤣

xsjrx · 21/06/2021 19:43

Sorry should have said my apt is 9.20am.

Elkey · 21/06/2021 19:48

I was told midnight. From PPs that seems pretty standard.

JJSS123 · 21/06/2021 21:51

Thank you so much everyone. I had 7.30 in my mind for some reason and that felt really early! Thanks, let’s just hope I pass it now 😂

NamechangeTTC · 21/06/2021 22:59

We’re from 1030pm and water only.

Sceptre86 · 22/06/2021 08:31

I had my appointment at 9am and was told to fast from 9pm the night before. Mine was two weeks ago.

JJSS123 · 22/06/2021 12:42

Thanks everyone. Had my blood test and then the drink 🤢 and I’ve got hyperemesis so struggled to keep it down but I managed! Waited two hours and she couldn’t get my blood out my veins aren’t the best anyway and she said with the fasting that didn’t help me so she went in seven different places and still none felt so bad for her!!! So now being referred to the diabetic midwife for home testing apparently. Does anyone know anything about this?

Summersun2020 · 23/06/2021 21:23

No idea tbh OP. If it was in a hospital, usually they’d ask a doctor or anaesthetist to come and obtain the bloods. It sounds like you’re being referred as if your gtt was impaired and treated as diabetic with home blood glucose monitoring? Maybe call tomorrow and discuss.

Rememberallball · 24/06/2021 04:55

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. Home testing is easy - you will be given a blood glucose monitor and test 4 times a day - on waking up and then before each meal. They will give you a range that your blood sugar should be within and, if you have 3 or more readings higher than that range, then you are given the diagnosis of GD

peoniesandpastels · 24/06/2021 06:30

Don't worry too much about the home testing. I have gestational diabetes in my current pregnancy and I was really nervous. The finger pricks aren't so bad. I test four times daily, when I first wake up before eating anything, and then an hour after the first bite of each meal. They will give you target readings which, if you don't have GD, they will expect you to be under. I think the targets vary by hospital trust - mine are significantly stricter than the NICE guidelines.

They'll probably have you test for about a week, and then send in your readings. A diabetes midwife or dietician will look them over and either tell you you're fine, or get a care plan in place for you.

My sympathies about having to drink that awful drink and keep it down. I really struggled to tolerate it in both of my pregnancies. At least they aren't making you do that again!

xsjrx · 29/06/2021 12:57

@JJSS123 If it's any consolation the midwife didn't manage to get any blood from me yesterday. I got up early too and drank about 1.5L water to try hydrate myself beforehand but no joy. Back to see a phlebotomist on the 15th. Luckily I didn't have to take the sugary drink but geez 75g of sugars/glucose in it...can safely say not looking forward to drinking that. Hope you get everything sorted.☺️
