What kind of businesses do people have where they work from home and have such flexible schedules?

I read all the time about people having their own businesses and working from home yet managing to go to the gym, do the school run, get a bit of housework done etc. I'm intrigued as to what kind of businesses people have that allow them such an amazing work/life balance whilst paying well too?

My husband and I have worked from home for many years. When we had jobs, my husband worked as a telecoms sales engineer based from home for over a decade and I was a representative for a wine company for three years. For the past five years, our family has owned an event photography business.

Most of the work is securing bookings by online ads on google, wedding/event sites, networking online or in person with event and meeting planners, restaurant owners, etc...

The actual work is on the weekend with a few days during the week editing unless, of course it's a midweek event. We put in approximately 15 hours of work a week but over seven days.

Covid-19 completely decimated our business so I got a retail job and my husband returned to doing contract work as a telecoms sales engineer, based from home. However, restrictions have been lifted where we live so we are ramping up the photography business again. But we are retraining to add another business as a hedge against another bust like we had in 2020.

I don't think either of us could ever really return to a working environment outside the home. 25 hours a week is pretty sweet.

Good luck OP!

I mostly do research and write reports. I have zoom meetings and site visits but that’s only about six hours or so a week. I do about 30 other hours that are flexible - so in winter in particular I tend to exercise in the daylight and work later.

Web design. Being flexible means that I work weekends and evenings when I have lots on.

I'm an editor. My hours are mostly flexible, it's very rare that I have to work a set time.

I’m self employed helping businesses with visual branding. I love my job, I set my own hours and work mostly from home around my primary aged kids.

flexible because I am a public health researcher (for a university).

I do need ethernet connections and big screens and specific software, so am equipment dependent but not schedule fixed.

dunno what "paying well" is, though, how does OP define that?
