AIBU to think 5 year olds do not need to learn about gender and pronouns in their maths lesson in the name of diversity

Honestly, this is getting ridiculous. It's #SchoolDiversityWeek. (which actually just covers gender and some sexuality, nothing on race, religion, or disability) which appears to be a week completely made up by a charity called Just Like Us.

The guidance and resources completely contravene the Education Act (on political impartiality) and the DfE guidelines on using resources from credible sources. The DfE also says that schools should not suggest non-adherence to stereotypes means a child may be trans. Again, these resources are riddled with it.

These resources are pretty bad, but this maths lesson for 5-7-year-olds is frankly bizarre. It's confusing, it doesn't need to be there, does nothing to actually address homophobia or bullying, and smacks of indoctrination. The same-aged kids are also told in assembly that some people will feel like a boy, some will feel like a girl and some will feel like neither.

All of the resources also undermine safeguarding. I wonder if schools have checked that people working for Just Like Us have gone through safer recruitment.

YANBU What a pile of arse.

EmeraldShamrock · 21/06/2021 12:33

Yep . wait until your DC starts wondering which is their fit. Sad
My DD was convinced she was non binary after these lessons as she wasn't like the other girls in her class.
She brought herself on a mission to learn all about it, only wearing gender neutral clothing, hair chopped off.
3 years later she believes she is not non binary and is just herself.
Finally. Confused

ValancyRedfern · 21/06/2021 12:59

That's so good to hear Emerald. I think this is appalling. The poor kids are tryi g to work the maths out, they don't need to be worrying about their pronouns at the same time. Dd is 7 and still gets he and she mixed up a lot. I couldn't care less. Also the sheer amount of words on the maths problem make it way more difficult than it needs to be. I hope any sensible teacher would realise this and not set this task.

superduster · 21/06/2021 13:08

Yes, there is random shit on the internet. There is no need to put it on here and be outraged every time you find some new rubbish. Just because it is made and online doesn't mean it will get near a classroom.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 21/06/2021 13:16

I would rather be aware that such school resources are out there so that if my dd school does decide to use it and my dd talks to me about it I know what she's talking about.

On that note - can anyone share a screenshot - I can't get tester to work on my phone, frustratingly.

Nonmaquillee · 21/06/2021 13:18

It’s indoctrination and I would be bloody livid.

Please do let the school know your thoughts ASAP.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/06/2021 13:19

Ah jesus.

Its frankly irrelevant if the water bottle giver is Male or Female or any other combination of feelings and biology. So why on earth is it even needed in a question!?

Except it is getting near classrooms. There are quotes from head teachers on their website and they are funded by big corporations. They are providing guidance for schools which breaches the Education Act.

Of course parents should care!

I question the motives of anyone who says we shouldn't.

It's in absolutely loads of classrooms.

I'm all for diversity but this is not the way to shoehorn complex identity issues into schools.
Doesn't the KS1 curriculum have a requirement to teach about male/female bodies?
Doesn't this hugely undermine this (unless they actually teach it properly, which might be difficult seeing as no-one is able to give a comprehensive definition of 'gender identity' etc here among educated adults?)

2fallsagain · 21/06/2021 13:46

There are so massive safeguarding red flags with this organisation. They recruit young people to be ambassadors, to go into schools and talk about their experiences. I am waiting to hear about their sager recruitment practices.

Erikrie · 21/06/2021 13:46

No they don't need to be indoctrinated into gender ideology in their maths or any other classes.

TheWeeDonkey · 21/06/2021 13:47

Its bullshit and its harmful bullshit, but this is how indoctrination works. Get into the kids heads and the rest will follow.

No wonder kids are so messed up today

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 21/06/2021 13:47

Good god - having home schooled my 6yo I can confidently say that this excessively wordy question with utterly irrelevant details would not get her to do her best maths work. Fuckssake.

2fallsagain · 21/06/2021 13:50

Yes Beware, not only is it indoctrination, is shit in terms of a resource. You have to wonder if these people have ever been near a classroom or indeed a child.

If Harley has any sense they will ask their other classmates first before getting more water . I bet quite a few of them are allergic to water and only drink filtered yaks milk or organic coconut water that has been harvested under a full moon.

And why are they buying in bottles of water in the first place ? Shouldn’t they be using their own non toxic environmentally friendly drink containers .

We've got some way to go to catch up with Canada. twitter.com/christophelston/status/1405283441373958149?s=20

Twitter link. A school/school district over there is asking parents of Kindergarten to Grade 4 pupils what their child's gender identity is. For Grades 5 and above, they ask the child (not the parents) about the child's sexual orientation. Grade 5 is 10 years old.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 21/06/2021 13:56

Honestly, if children are trans they can work it out for themselves later. A child in DD 13's year is genderfluid but worked it out for herself a couple of years ago.

Whatwouldscullydo · 21/06/2021 13:57

Oh ffs.

Why is it schools allow bullying if all.kinds all year round then only give a crap about one particular kind of bullying when uts pride month or diversity week ir whatever other week they can shoe horn in gaslighting children.

Those poor kids.

Millionnewnames · 21/06/2021 14:03

Ahhhh. I hate this crap. I’m so sick of it. For centuries we’ve had boys and girls . I’m glad gay and bi people and trans people are allowed to be themselves and their right to live the way they want should be protected. But for the vast majority , you are a boy or a girl. It’s in your chromosomes. The message being delivered by these crazies is that there is something wrong with it, that’s what kids are going to take from it that they should all identify as non binary or something. My little boy is built like a brick **house, he’s tall , muscly , chunky and obsessed with everything stereotypically masculine, cars, engines , explosions .... Very like his Dad. My daughter , like me was a tomboy . We liked stereotypical boys stuff and dressed like chaps too for some of our childhood. But we sure as hell are both women now , thank god someone hadn’t come to my school and told me I was NB or trans.
If anyone tells my little boy he’s wrong for being a blokey bloke at school I hope he head butts them.

alwayswithhope · 21/06/2021 14:04

Can we not just leave kids alone to be kids.

HopeValley · 21/06/2021 14:05

I doubt any teacher would use these. It's just not how maths is taught - what are the chances your class would be on addition and subtraction word problems in the week that this falls? Practically nill. And the level of reading required is more like Y3/4 level, who would be dealing with 3 and 4 digit numbers. It's just really nothing like the reality of maths in a decent primary school, regardless of the content.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 21/06/2021 14:06

I'm so pleased my dc are older and not having to listen to this nonsense at such a young age. Its bad enough in secondary school but at least secondary school age have a bit more understanding.
