DIY Painting - roller or paintbrush...?

Just had a spat with DH. We are converting our basement, it was started last Easter (DH has done it all so far*) and are now at the stage where the walls need to be painted.

(*DH does a fabulous job but it is painstakingly slow. Hence, this room has been worked on, on and off, for over a year. I personally think that some things require more attention than others, and a white paint on a white lining paper in a room with limited natural light isn't one of those times.)

Two of the walls are to be white, another a far darker colour and the last is wallpaper. I said I could do the white one's and asked if we had a roller as it would be quicker. Cue an eruption from DH about how bad rollers are and how it needs to be done 'properly' and the colour needs to be 'flat.'

I painted the walls in our old house with a roller (when he was away) and he had no idea. These walls were coloured, and in lighter rooms so if the application of paint was really that different, it would have surely been obvious...? I did point this out but he just pulled a face.

AIBU to think he's being overly precious about things that won't be noticed

AINBU he's just being thorough and making sure it's perfect

Professionals use rollers. Your husband just wants time to himself.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/06/2021 11:28

Cue an eruption

This is the problem. Having opposing views is entirely normal, and a reasonable solution is to have a sensible conversation about best ways to do something.

An eruption over something like roller v brush is ridiculous and I'd have no truck with him erupting at me over something so trivial.

He does it - he chooses the method.
You do it - you choose the method.

brush for tricky & small areas, roller for large surfaces

JemimaPyjamas · 20/06/2021 11:30

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba That's pretty much what I'd use!

Yes, cut in or tricky areas use a brush, roller the rest. Woodwork I always use a brush though.

JemimaPyjamas · 20/06/2021 11:35

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I suppose 'eruption' might be a bit strong, but he reacted as if I was suggesting slapping paint on the wall with a pair of dirty socks or something equally dreadful!

Yes, use both roller and brush.
I use brush to do the borders/edges and then fill in with a roller. I don’t use masking tape because with a brush my hands are steady. But my husband always uses masking tape because he likes to just use roller and depends on the tape to protect edges from paint going over.

But I agree with pp who said there is no need to agree on method. Who ever is doing the painting should use whatever method they are comfortable with.

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/06/2021 11:36

Not yet mentioned is the sponge method...yes some people like painting with sponges.

This is why it always takes so bloody loooooooooooong!

He once took weeks tiling the bathroom as he had to make sure the tiles under the bath were also perfect - as another example. He does work full time too, so these things have to be slotted around.

@PlanDeRaccordement If I suggest sponges he might actually faint! Grin

Lol. Might be worth it as a joke to just to see his face....

BadNomad · 20/06/2021 11:42

Brushes give a nicer finish if done properly but it's a pain in the ass.

JemimaPyjamas · 20/06/2021 11:43

I think it makes sense if the colours and area make it more noticeable but not in these circs.

Paint sprayer? Or paint bomb al la Mr Bean? Grin
Painting vast expanses of walls with a brush is frankly bonkers and looks rubbish surely. Unless he is doing a mural.

Medievalist · 20/06/2021 11:46

In an empty room I'd definitely use a roller - it's much quicker and gives a smoother, flatter finish I think.

However, I'm a lazy painter and can never be bothered to cover myself or furniture properly and have never managed to use a roller without spraying myself and everything around me with paint.

Mydogisagentleman · 20/06/2021 11:47

As PP said, both.
I loathe painting, DH is ambivalent about it. He’s currently in Portugal and I am thinking of painting one wall in our kitchen navy.
I did mention it to him on Friday.
He said to wait and he will do it when he gets back. Win for me!
He will use a brush and tape for the tops and bottom of the wall then a roller for the middle bit
