To think it’s silly to not go by your name on Facebook?

Unless you’re a teacher/work with children for obvious reasons.

I have a locked down Facebook with photos of me as my profile pictures, but nothing offensive or anything that could be considered dodgy.

Equally only friends can see my timeline, but again I’d never post anything offensive.

Am I being really naive here? A lot of my “friends” seem to go by firstname middlename but surely you can just decline a friend request?

I don’t use my name because I’ve had patients try to friend me.

I don’t post anything on any SM I wouldn’t be ok with the general public or my boss reading. I think it’s incredibly naive to think anything you post is guaranteed a limited audience.

I actually think it's weird to put your real name on FB and spread out your life for everyone to see. Why ? I wouldn't want to be looked up by distant acquaintances or strangers. And nothing you put online is ever truly confidential.

My husband and I work in police departments. Our FB names are no where near our real names. Neither of us want the police departments knowing who we are on social media. Between us we have about 30 friends, none of whom are connected to our jobs.

Not just teachers; NHS staff, carers, plus anyone who travels to countries with different rules (eg if they post anti government stuff on their FB or support anti government movements) they obviously don’t use the name on their passport for FB, in many countries FB is blocked.

I use a fakename on all my social media accounts. I don't need or want them connected to my name.

@Sparklingbrook

I used to have a fake FB account a few years ago. I set it up to join a FB group and I’m glad I made up a whole new persona. They were all absolutely bonkers and I left eventually and got rid of the account. Also didn’t want family to find me.

Not silly at all. Not everyone wants to disclose their full name publicly. It's personal identifiable information, people have the right to keep it private or disclose.

There are at least 3 people with my name in this country (and my name is not that common!) - I've dealt professionally with 1 and another lives locally enough for our takeaway orders to get mixed up on occasion 🤣

I got the name on Facebook but not when trying to join Twitter, gmail, yahoo, hotmail and a couple of other things.
