To ask what to wear to an interview?

neroforte · 18/06/2021 21:38

Hi, I’ve just got my first interview for tomorrow at 11:30am tomorrow!
I’ve never had one before so have no idea what to wear and what questions I’ll be asked!
It’s a kitchen Porter job so not too fancy, but just a bit unsure
Please someone help!

So he sexually harassed a potential employee during the interview?

Run. And keep running.

What a dick.

User27aw · 19/06/2021 18:44

Yuck he sounds a creep. Saying that at an interview is dodgy. I wouldnt take the job.

Wrotten · 19/06/2021 18:53

You don't want to work for this man.

DavidTheDog · 19/06/2021 20:48

I'm afraid I agree with other replies. Sexual harassment is rife in the hospitality trade, especially at your age. I would keep going for interviews .

KM38 · 19/06/2021 20:49

@Graphista

Don't chase it any more

Frankly sounds like you dodged a bullet!

That was an inappropriate and unprofessional comment for him to have made.

BUT I'm really glad the interview went well - think of it as practice for the next one.

Unfortunately this is life at times. Keep on applying for other jobs, keep going for interviews positive and confident and smartly dressed and you WILL get there

I don't know where you are op but here in Scotland we have a phrase

"What's for you won't go by you"

Which means that what is meant for you won't pass you by.

You will get the right job for you

Wishing you so much luck! Thanks

Please don’t go and work for this man @neroforte - he sounds like a sleaze! If he’s making those comments at interview I can only imagine what you’d be subject to at work. 😓

As @Graphista quite rightly said, is Scottish love the phrase - “what’s for you won’t go by you” 😁

Blueballinthegarden · 19/06/2021 23:20

Ugh I’m sorry you experienced that, it’s awful and not what you should expect from an interview. Wishing you the best for future interviews, there are good employers out there! Flowers

neroforte · 19/06/2021 23:40

Hi everyone! So I called them (before I read the messages on this post lol) and the owner picked up (turns out I had spoken to the manager at the interview) and said sorry for not calling it he’d been really busy etc, I’m going to be working at his other restaurant 2 mins away from the one I applied for, he said it has more people of my sort of age working there (looking at their Instagram it seems like most of them are around 18ish which is good!) and that it would fit my hours better (still 40 hours, but not having to work after 10pm which is what I requested (but happy to start work earlier)). The owner definitely seems very nice and was a lot more professional and formal but still really nice and reassuring haha.
Just to add I didn’t feel uncomfortable when that comment was made, he seemed to say it in a nice way not a creepy way if u know what I mean and he was quite professional but casual the rest of the interview, so I don’t think he was a bad guy!!
I will be there from 10am-10pm and will get breakfast lunch and dinner, and I start on Monday!
I’m really happy :)

Congratulations! Just make sure they dont take advantage of the fact this is your first job, 16 and 17 year olds have extra rights due to their young age such as minimum break lengths and maximum working hours

Graphista · 20/06/2021 03:51

Congratulations that sounds like a much better fit for you.

he seemed to say it in a nice way not a creepy way

Honestly he shouldn't have said it at all!

Please have good boundaries for this kind of thing you will need them!

Good luck Thanks

musthavebeenlove · 20/06/2021 03:57

I disagree with people who say you can’t overdress for an interview. I have been told twice in my life that I had and in one of those cases it was partly the reason they didn’t hire me Confused.

In your case OP, I would go for casual smart.
Casual smart in my book is smart trousers or black jeans (very neat ones without any stains, holes etc), plus a nice cardigan or blazer. Wear a nice scarf with it, wear your hair up if it’s long.

Good luck.

DavidTheDog · 20/06/2021 06:16

I wonder if she’ll take your advice @musthavebeenlove and whether she’ll ever come back to update us on how it went.

I think you have missed the sarcasm in Davidthedogs post … they were surely making the point that musthavebeenlove’s advice was a bit late. 🙂

You are 16? Those working hours are surely illegal if so.

Yes. I know. Because I'm capable of reading a thread of only 38 posts.

It's against the law for a 16 year old to work 12 hours a day OP. I'd be vary wary about working for these people. They have also changed where the job is after your interview. And the comments made to you were not ok even if you think it was nice and not creepy. It's always creepy when an adult male makes that kind of comment to a young girl he doesn't know. That's not normal. Do you have any adults you can talk this through with in real life?

Zorinindustries · 20/06/2021 09:37

OP, please take care. The manager sounds sleepy. The hours sound v v long. Due to your age you must have a 30 min break for after 4.5 hours. This does not have to be paid.
And there needs to be formal training, leading to a qualification, it's the law for under 18s.
I don't want to put a downer on this, congratulations on the job, just know what you should be getting by law. Take a look at www.gov.uk/child-employment

Good luck, and enjoy the job

Zorinindustries · 20/06/2021 09:37
  • NOT sleepy, I meant creepy!
HappydaysArehere · 20/06/2021 10:21

Didn’t care for that “young and pretty” remark. He didn’t need to say that and should have just asked you if you would consider a waitressing job. As for saying he would contact you and then not doing it - well that sounds as if he is not acting professionally and with integrity. Put it down to experience. It’s not you, it’s the situation at the present time. Just keep ploughing on.

MrsPinkCock · 20/06/2021 14:41

OP, you’re going to have a bad time working there.

You’ve been sexually harassed during the interview and then you’re being told to work hours that are actually illegal at your age! Your employer cannot allow you to work more than 8 hours a day at 16.

How much are we prepared to bet he will want to pay you cash in hand, and won’t give you a contract?

Seriously - this is not a good job!!

Blueballinthegarden · 20/06/2021 15:26

Eeeek this doesn’t sound much better! Please be really careful OP, what do your family/friends think?

neroforte · 20/06/2021 15:30

My family are really happy with it and I’m excited to start. I will keep all of your advice in mind and if things start to turn dodgy I will leave as soon as possible Smile

@neroforte Good luck on your first day!! Just remember star you’re entitled to in terms of breaks etc. Don’t let them take advantage!

Benefit of the doubt, maybe there’s been a mix up in communication and the working hours will be between 10am-10pm so no early starts of later finishes, rather than working from 10-10? But I’m not holding my breath for that being true 😬

neroforte · 21/06/2021 17:45

hi everyone! it went really well, i made a few mistakes like leaving the tray on the table after giving people their drinks etc but overall i think it went well. i had an early finish today from 10-4 as it was sort of a trainee thing to see if i wanted to continue, i said yes so i start properly on wednesday 10-10. i had a 15 min break in the morning, and a 30 min break at lunch where i got lunch for free. i was offered free breakfast and coffee but i wasn’t hungry due to nerves. :)
