About 3 weeks ago my friend's DD was sent home from kindergarted as she had nits. She was at home for 10 days, went back for a few days then was sent home again.

She has been back in kindergarten since Monday. According to the GP, she was nitfree last Thursday.

Now DS has been sent home as he has nits which is a pain as he has to stay off 10 days. I am selfemployed so have to call off my classes.

My problem with my friend is that her DD has very long, very thick hair. She is 3yo and her hair reaches her waist. I cannot see that she can say that DD is definately free off nits. She would have to spend hours combing and searching. It would be very easy to miss just one egg, they are so tiny.

The first time she had nits, she talked about getting her DD's hair cut but has not done this. I know that it would not get rid of the horrible beasties, but it would make detecting them much easier.

To make matters worse, when I called her to tell her I could not take her DD home with me this afternoon as my DS has nits, she said, "Well, now I know where DD caught them again" as the kindergarten had just phoned to let her know. I was so as I have done loads to help her, even looking after her DD when she was working. I have a dent in my tongue from biting it.

This is only our GP's "rule". He won't give us the certificate we need for the kindergarten unless they have been off for the full 10 days. Some GPs don't insist on the 10 days.

I am ok really as I am self employed, so it is easy for me to arrange time off. A bit annoying but doable. For working mums it is much more difficult and so they are tempted to take the kids back earlier, even if it means that the nits get passed on again.

Have cut DS's hair and put the stuff from the chemists on it. I cannot see anymore nits or lice on him, but found some on DD. Just as well I brought her home too.

this is the best way to get rid of them
chemicals almost 80% are now resistant to the chemicals
teatree oil all that malarkey there is no evidence that it works a cochrane review found this when it looked at all the evidence

i use a shampoo called herbal riddance, it has neem seed extract in it and seems to keep the nits away, i use normal shampoo most of the time and then once a week wash their hair with the herbal riddance. the only time we have had nits was when i ran out of the shampoo and the chemists didnt have any in. i think its by bioforce?

We had something similar these past weeks (a MNetter in Germany suggested it) but we did not use it last week as it had run out. Will dig it out again now.

Why on earth do you have to go to the doctor for nits?

Blinking eck its hard enough to get an appointment for a chest infection here, never mind nits!!!!!

Me and dd have been battling them for weeks. There is no way I would keep her off school for even 1 day.

We have to get a line from the doc before the kindergarten let them back. Same for tummy upsets if there are some really nasty viruses going around. Last winter a friend's DS was off for weeks as he was still testing positive for the Novovirus.

The docs do not mind as our health insurance does not cover the line so they charge us extra.
