To think that a GP probably wouldn't have said that he doesn't recommend my df has the vaccine?

My dad is 80. He's had a blood clot in the past. He told me his gp recommended that he didn't have the Covid vaccine due to his medical history. For context, my dm is a rabid antivaxxer. Is there any possibility he's telling the truth? Fwiw I am leaving the choice up to them (my dm would like nothing more than to argue about it and I'm not giving her the satisfaction).

Well there's no way of knowing for sure. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for vaccines

Fitforforty · 18/06/2021 10:54

It may have been recommended that he didn’t have the AZ vaccine but I doubt they would recommend that he didn’t have any vaccine. Unfortunately your DF is an adult and unless he doesn’t have capacity there is nothing you can do about it.

catndogslife · 18/06/2021 10:59

I know people who have had blood clots in the past who have been vaccinated OP so unlikely to be true.

Ponoka7 · 18/06/2021 11:15

I've had pulmonary blood clots in the past, been hospitalised etc. I've also got other complex health issues. My Consultant recommend the AZ because I'm over 50 and the chances of a blood clot vs my chances with Covid is a lot better. People who have had strokes after blood clots are having the vaccine. At 80 he'd be told to have it.

It isn't worth arguing about. Although if he doesn't make it through winter, you'll eventually tell her what you think.

Did she have you vaccinated as a child?

Bells3032 · 18/06/2021 11:17

given that Covid is a blood clotting illness would think that someone with a past history (esp at 80) would be highly reccomended to have a vaccine (although likely to suggest pfizer rather than aZ)

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/06/2021 11:19

No I'm not arguing with them about it, it's up to them. Just wondered whether that was a 'thing'.

I'm not sure if they had me vaccinated. I definitely had the bcg vaccine. Dmum wouldn't let me get glasses though as they train your eyes to be lazy, and also wouldn't let me have paracetamol for the inevitable headaches I constantly had, so safe to say she hated doctors/medical things

The people who have died from the causal blood clots have all been under 50.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 18/06/2021 11:20

The over 80s were offered their first jab back in January, when the clotting risk from AZ vaccine was unknown (most jabs pfizer anyway until mid-Jan, which was also when they moved from groups 1&2 - health and social care and over 80s' to 3-4 - over 70s and CEV)

So it's really unlikely (I'd say impossible) he had this advice when he would have first have been offered the jab.

What has happened in the intervening months between Dec/Jan when someone his age would first have been invited and now?

Ozanj · 18/06/2021 11:22

I think he’s lying to you too.

Ponoka7 · 18/06/2021 11:22

If that's been her stance throughout her life, then nothing is going to change her mind.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/06/2021 11:23

Yeah pretty sure it's bullshit.

They both have social anxiety and by their own admission bloody loved lockdown as "everyone had to live like they did". Think they are just looking for more excuses never to leave the house.

Its been reccomended by several medical professional that I do not have the vaccine while pregnant due to my medical history and that precautions would have to be put in place for me to receive it afterwards if i choose.

Zerorightanswers · 18/06/2021 11:58

I have a blood clot right now and was given Pfizer

spanieleyes · 18/06/2021 12:18

My son has a blood clot currently, is under 30 and was given Astra Zeneca. When he spoke to his GP , they said that, because he is already on long term warfarin, he is probably LESS likely to develop a further clot than someone not on warfarin!

Ozanj · 18/06/2021 12:21

Yes, if you have a clotting disorder then many consultants are now recommending Az because it’s most likey to reduce severe / long covid complications - which are more likely if you have a clotting disorder.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/06/2021 12:21

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I hope those with blood clots improve soon Flowers

My mother is 59 and has a long list of medical issues, one of them being Urticaria Odaema. She has random allergic reactions to things. One day she can eat something fine, the next she can develop swelling and hives from the same thing. She has to carry an epi pen at all times.
The GP have told her that she cannot have the covid vaccine just yet due to this. They haven't said never, but just for now until they can be sure that she will be ok with it.

Do you not know if you had any of your childhood vaccinations? You can ask your GP whether or not you did, and have them now if you want!

One of my friends did this - her mum was anti-vax so she had them done in her mid-twenties.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/06/2021 21:06

I'm 55! They would probably have all worn off now anyway 🤣

Kittenbittenmitten · 18/06/2021 21:35

Hmm. It's puzzling that he would feel the need to lie to you. He is free (as you know) to decide whether or not he gets the vaccination. Do you think your mum is controlling?
