Hayfever vaccine?

princesspeppax · 17/06/2021 21:43

Not really an AIBU posting for traffic - i'm just looking to see if anybody has had the hayfever vaccination? we have a clinic near by us which is offering it and my husband is thinking of going for it, he suffers horrendously from Hayfever and has done for years, he has tried every over the counter remedy/ eyedrop & nasal spray that we can think of and for the last 3 summers has been prescribed Fexofenadine from the GP but even with the fexofenadine, vaseline around the nostrils and sunglasses on most of the day he is in a terrible state with it - unfortunately he works in construction which is predominantly outdoors which obviously is harder to avoid the pollen. From my understanding NHS don't offer it which is why my husbands looked into private clinics but i'm a bit sceptical- surely if the nhs don't offer it there's a reason for it.

Any advice welcome pro's/ cons and anything inbetween to help!

Thanks

The reason is expense compared to benefit... £125 for an injection that might relieve symptoms for three weeks...but there is limited evidence for its efficacy. Some dodgy side effects too.

Calling it a vaccine is also really disingenuous. It is a steroid injection.

Immunotherapy is recommended. patient.info/news-and-features/the-pros-and-cons-of-the-hay-fever-injection

My husband gets the kenalog shot yearly and works a treat for him.

Not sure if that’s the one you’re looking at. Let me know if you want more details.

Hax · 17/06/2021 22:02

Thereis no such thing.
You can get a steroid injection but it's not a vaccine and may not help much. I take steroids all year round and still get hay fever.

LoopTheLoops · 17/06/2021 22:09

Following! I’m sick of suffering all summer with bloody hay fever, makes me so miserable

princesspeppax · 17/06/2021 22:17

Ooops apologies in the mixup with vaccine / injection. I'm really not that sure on it my husband only discovered there was such a thing last night but not much info to go online about it.

My husband had one in March and has just been for his second as the effects seem to have worn off. It's great while it lasts.

carrieeee · 17/06/2021 22:32

I don't think I'd be keen on having steroids injected in me, after reading up about the steroid withdrawals it's made me a little worried of them!
I do keep seeing people advertise the kenalog jab and it worries me that a beauty therapist can train to do it in a afternoon, what if you have an allergic reaction? They have no medical background to help, so I would definitely do your homework and go to a medical profession for it.

(I will just add, I'm a beauty therapist so I'm not slating the beauticians but we simply aren't qualified enough to be injecting people with medication)

princesspeppax · 17/06/2021 22:35

@carrieeee that is worrying I didn't think that would be allowed! The clinic near us is private gp clinic and it seems you have a gp appointment with them before hand do discuss it, well at least thats my understanding from reading their website. I'm not sure re side effects on steroids either will need to get some more information on it, I just don't want him rushing in trying to get a quick resolution so trying to get as many facts as possible

My dad used to have it done at a private drs surgery. He would get it in March and would usually last.Helped with his hay fever and also really cleared up his psoriasis. He didn’t have withdrawals or anything like that. He didn’t have it this year though and his hayfever is worse than usual but I think most peoples is at the moment. His psoriasis is pretty bad again too.
That was kenalog

Checkonthat · 17/06/2021 22:40

I have had it, it worked really well for me. Some days if I was gardening I might get mild symptoms and would take an anti histamine- it has been a life saver really. The side effects sound quite serious but I did not experience any. I have no contraindications though. I also went to a private GP and they went through a thorough medical history first so I felt really comfortable.

Hayfever was really debilitating for me, to the point I was having to not work and I tried everything. So this has been great for me

Checkonthat · 17/06/2021 22:41

Sorry it was kenalog I had

Checkonthat · 17/06/2021 22:42

Oh god I also wanted to say! The gp did say some people need a second ‘dose’ later in the season but I never.

Going to a GP privately is definitely the best option, it is terrible that there isn't restrictions in place to keep it just to medical professions.
Good luck with it all, hopefully it will bring your husband some relief Smile

No need to apologise. It's not that I was picking up on you. Some providers call it a vaccine - I think this is really underhand of them as it might lead people to think it works like a vaccine.
kittie01 · 17/06/2021 22:56

I’ve never heard of a hey fever vaccine. Watching this thread and pray I get something from it. Hay fever sufferer for years

KihoBebiluPute · 17/06/2021 22:57

I have considered it, I first heard of it as a treatment in 2019 and had been planning to get it for thr hayfever season of 2020.

However, part of the way it works is to suppress the immune system. The information leaflet says under side-effects if you were to get an infection such as measles or chicken pox within 3 weeks of having a kenalog injection it would be a worse episode than would otherwise be the case - ie it is talking about suppressing the ability of the body to fight off viruses. And that would include Covid19. So I have no plans to get the hayfever injection until the Covid pandemic is fully over.

ChrissyPlummer · 17/06/2021 23:28

My ex used to have it every year as his symptoms were genuinely debilitating. It was available on the NHS for very severe cases, but isn’t any longer, he was gutted but, thankfully they gave him some new (at the time) tablets and he got on OK with them. Not as effective as the injection but he did get some relief and was able to work.

nina3638 · 17/06/2021 23:37

i had it a couple of years ago. did shite all other than leave a dimple in my bum 🥲
