To think work should give us an incentive to stay?

My workplace is kind of a strange one in that it's only temporary due to a temporary demand in my industry. It's just temporary contracts and there is a high turnover of staff.

I recently have joined a new department at my workplace and I am being trained in quite a lot of depth with the intention that I will then train my colleagues, but at a more superficial level. Therefore they will know enough for the normal day-to-day responsibilities but I will know how to troubleshoot and have slightly more responsibility whilst also doing my normal role. The opening of the department is pretty much dependent on me and a few select colleagues being present for the extra responsibilities and to be able to train everyone else.

The issue is, I've been applying to other jobs and have some interviews scheduled. I feel really guilty about the timing of it and have contemplated cancelling them but it's an open secret that everyone else is applying for jobs too as we all want something more secure. There is a constant turnover of staff. AIBU to think if I have more responsibility there should be more of an incentive to stay?

The poor running of the company is not your responsibility.

@Fitforforty

The poor running of the company is not your responsibility.
True. I just think they should have considered this and if there are roles with more responsibility they should recognise that officially (e.g. extending our contracts or changing our job title). I would be more likely to stay if I knew my job was more secure.

Get a job offer, go back to work and say “I’ve had a permanent job offer, what would you be prepared to do to induce me to stay?” Happens all the time. I’ve offered jobs to a few people (women as well as men) who’ve gone back to their existing employers and negotiated a better deal. Bit of a waste of time for me, but I tend to feel “good for you!” because I wouldn’t have offered them a job if I didn’t basically like them.

Get a job other then go back and see if they can do better.

Don’t feel bad about it either.

You could let them know that, unless they offer a permanent contract, you will continue to look elsewhere

But, even with a permanent contract, you can still be made redundant

I don't think employers / employees give or expect loyalty in the way they did in the past. If it's the right thing for you to move on, then you should do that

Its a temporary job and no one in these roles is irreplaceable. Apply away for other roles, they'll manage without you fine if you leave.
