AIBU DC keeps being sent home from nursery because he’s hot?

Bellasblankexpression · 17/06/2021 19:09

DC is a hot boy he never feels cool to touch except in the dead of the night (I have another thread about this as dressing him for it is a nightmare).
He goes to nursery three days a week but because he’s teething he keeps getting very red cheeks (very fair) and that combined with him feeling warm means they take his temperature. It keeps being 37.7 sometimes 37.8 and so I have to go and collect him.
We’ve done Covid tests each time - always negative - and I’ve had him at the doctors, all fine they say teething combined with him being a warm child.

But how on earth am I going to be able to keep this up with work/nursery etc if he keeps being sent home? I appreciate it from their side, they can’t take any chances, but it’s costing a fortune and he’s at home more than he’s there at the moment.

Doctor really not concerned he’s a perfectly well child and whenever he’s actually unwell he goes above 38. Doctor also said not all thermometers are accurate and you can easily get different readings but nursery have to abide by their Covid rules. Every time he’s been sent home, within a day or two he’s had a new tooth cut through it fully appear through but nursery say teething don’t cause fevers.

I don’t know what the answer is. I don’t think they are being unreasonable really, I’m just frustrated that even after I’ve spoken to the GP repeatedly and explained it still keeps happening

@Bellasblankexpression

In the meantime I guess I’m just going to have to suck it up. The doctor won’t write a note for it and nursery are abiding by their procedure so I think it’s a bit of a stalemate really. A frustrating one!
Why won’t the dr write a note?

My child has a pollen allergy (confirmed via blood test). As a result they often clear their throat and have runny nose.

Dr was happy to write a note to school to say these are ’normal’ symptoms for my child, to stop the school interpreting it as a cough or sending them home unnecessarily.

I did have to pay a fee though.

grandmashotdoodlebugs · 17/06/2021 21:57

I feel for you!
My DS is opposite and his temp runs low.
He can be really really unwell with a temp of 37.9 because his base is 36.0 but doctors don't take me seriously.

Try to get the manager on side to do his temp there at various points in the the day and keep a log.

I went to a business meeting last week and they went all funny on me because my temp was 37.3 and everyone else is 36 something

Yeah. I had a cold, I had a virus the week before (negative Covid). We've become the super clean now. !

Nodancingshoes · 17/06/2021 22:05

Weve been told that a high temp is 38 and above. To be fair tho, the advice is that if someone feels hot to the touch on their chest and back then it is a temperature and you shouldn't need to use a thermometer. Guess they are just being cautious and trying to follow the rules

Bellasblankexpression · 17/06/2021 22:12

That’s mad @grandmashotdoodlebugs 37.3 is a perfectly normal temperature! It’s well within the green “fine” range on our thermometer

They won’t write a note I guess because temperature isn’t quite like a specific allergy - so they can’t say for sure that one day if he does get to 38 that he’s just warm. They might if I monitor it for a few weeks though so I can show his temperature. Lord this is reminding me of trying to conceive with the temping charts!

OP posts:
Bellasblankexpression · 17/06/2021 22:14

@Nodancingshoes yes this is the thing - he does often feel briefly very warm back and chest and hands and feet and head but he doesn’t stay like it for long, and usually seems “normal warm” before long.

I think monitoring it isn’t a bad idea - if he will let me, he’s not a fan of having
Something put in his ear. I could use a forehead one but it doesn’t seem as reliable and is usually a degree lower than the ear one but then I can use that and add one on

I’m not having a go at nursery at all, they’re doing what they’ve been told to do and it’s not really their problem if DS isn’t the norm
When it comes to temperature, but I’m just finding it difficult to navigate

Is calpol appropriate to be given to him?

Theunamedcat · 17/06/2021 22:19

If you know his temp goes up when he eats dairy maybe don't give him dairy at nursery?

Bellasblankexpression · 17/06/2021 22:30

@Theunamedcat yes I’m actually going to try him on less dairy now, I hadn’t made the connection or any kind of connection until I saw the other poster’s comment. Could be nothing of course, but now he’s eating significantly more dairy than he ever has so I’m wondering if I cut down on it on nursery days if it will have an affect.
Although I suppose if he’s allergic I would have to try and cut it out altogether and not sure that’s wise without an actual diagnosis

I’ve taken it this morning and it’s 37.8 🙈 so maybe he is actually coming down with something. He doesn’t look red or seem feverish at all though!

OP posts:
Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 11:18

Okay sorry to keep harping on I’m trying to monitor and make sure I’m doing it right.

We’ve got three thermometers (DH prefers underarm, then we had a forehead and in ear which we didn’t trust and a brain thermoscan which seems to be the best according to reviews)

Because nursery has the braun I thought I would try the other thermometers just to see if it was the braun reading high (likelihood low I know, especially for two sepeRate ones!)

The braun is reading 37.8
Underarm is 36.8
The other in ear one is reading 36.9
Forehead is 36.6 (forehead is the same as the second in ear it does both)

I need to pick a thermometer and stick with it I know, but how can they all be different to each other?! And braun seems to be reading much higher?

God I hate this pandemic, I never really thought about taking temperatures before I would always go by feel!

DS feels warm but not hot and doesn’t look feverish which is often how he is when he gets sent home! This is driving me to distraction. I didn’t send him in this morning as I thought he was sickening for something due to the reading but he’s absolutely fine.

I need wine

You might have more flexibility with a childminder than a nursery

Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 11:49

I know, but it’s more expensive and he really loves nursery :(
I’m totally bamboozled by thermometer readings now

OP posts:
Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 12:06

Can anyone help with the different thermometer readings?

OP posts:
NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 18/06/2021 12:07

How old is he? I don't believe it's relevant for Covid unless the temperature is over 38.

NHS defines "high temperature" here as 38:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 18/06/2021 12:08

Temperature readings can vary a lot. Sometimes if you read your instructions you will find its calibrated to a particular place (eg in ear or under arm) and you have to adjust the reading per the instructions for different places. Worth checking.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 18/06/2021 12:09

Childminders are usually cheaper than nurseries and far more sensible about this sort of thing.

Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 12:12

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland he’s 18 months

OP posts:
DeathStare · 18/06/2021 12:15

I know, but it’s more expensive and he really loves nursery

Are you sure? That would be very unusual. Childminders are usually much cheaper than nurseries.

I understand that your DS loves nursery, but it's useless as a form of reliable childcare if they are going to keep sending him home.

Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 12:16

He seems absolutely fine today, I’ve taken his temperature twice and massively varying readings with the different thermometers. The braun one in ear is consistently high.

The only thing that’s up with him is lots and lots of dribble and teeth coming through. Despite the high reading he doesn’t look remotely feverish.

I’m going to give nursery a call later and chat to them about it again, I’m driving myself loopy

OP posts:
Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 12:17

I might be getting mixed up with nannies? @DeathStare

It would just be such a shame because apart from being sent home, he’s thriving at nursery and loves it and is really settled

OP posts:
Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 12:18

I also think part of the problem is he’s incredibly fair so when he runs about a bit or eats a big meal and gets a little warm he looks noticeably red

OP posts:
Patapouf · 18/06/2021 12:32

Can your doctor write a note describing him as a warm boy?

mygee · 18/06/2021 13:08

Am I right in thinking that you should add one degree to the reading given by a forehead and under arm thermometer? Which would them match the reading you got from the braun.

Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 13:17

@mygee are you?! I’ve never heard this. Il go and have a google

OP posts:
Bellasblankexpression · 18/06/2021 13:25

I can’t see anywhere it says to add, but it says under arm will always be cooler than in ear

His underarm is still in normal range though where his braun in ear isn’t so I don’t know what to make of it
