To ask if you will buy British meat rather than OZ/NZ with lower welfare standards?

Partly inspired by the farmer thread…

The Brexit trade deal with Australia has opened up tariff free trade for meat which can be produced to a lower animal welfare standard than employed by the UK system

Our UK farmers could be undercut by imports where poorer practices are employed

Will you support homegrown meat, UK farming and the standards they work to?

Won’t be buying meat from Aus/NZ. I mean wtf I don’t get it we have meat here why doesnit need to fly halfway round the world.

museumum · 18/06/2021 21:47

I will in the supermarket but I guess it’ll fund it’s way into restaurants and cafes and I probably eat more meat when eating out than I do at home.

Mandalay246 · 19/06/2021 06:46

I will not buy anything from Aus/NZ under this deal.

Produce that can be kept frozen and shipped halfway around the world, with associated fuel and staffing costs, and STILL be cheaper than produce from the UK (or Europe) - how utterly crap must that stuff be?

I can assure you that NZ meat is not "utterly crap", and I very much doubt that Australian meat is either. The first shipment of frozen meat from NZ to the UK was in 1882 - why is everyone going on as though it is something new?

PurpleyBlue · 19/06/2021 07:02

If it ends up being cheaper than British then I'd want to know exactly why before deciding. I rarely eat meat anyway though.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 19/06/2021 07:07

I've always bought only British meat poultry and eggs and will continue to do so. I buy it for the UK's strict animal welfare and production standards

Same here. Better quality and food safety are a bonus.

Sirzy · 19/06/2021 07:10

I get all my meat from the local farm shop anyway so nothing will change for me

hesterstanhope · 19/06/2021 07:11

I’d be very very surprised is Australian meat is cheaper the British as it is expensive here.

There is no excess meat and increasing production is difficult due to lack of useful land. Cattle here usually require a square km each as the pasture is less Rick due to soil types and rainfall.

Generally, the meat which is sold overseas is super premium as it can be marked up to cover transport costs. Lower quality meal is readily sold to local supermarkets.

The Australian trade deal has nothing to do with New Zealand.

Why do posters keep going on as though the two countries are one?

Bookfour · 20/06/2021 04:45

Not enough of us will do to make a difference!

ScribblyBaller · 20/06/2021 05:06

The Australia deal offers absolutely nothing to the British consumer. This is all for the benefit of Liz Truss', and Global Britain's' public image. If you can't see that you're a ninny.

And by Global Britain I mean sad, reduced little Britain.

It's part of a sweetener for work visas for British. As is the way with politics.
SpeakingFranglais · 20/06/2021 05:36

I will only buy British, I’m pretty sure we had meat in one major supermarket in the past with an Australian flag sticker on it before and I avoided it.

Or maybe I dreamt it and it was kangaroo meat I saw.

Either way what is the benefit of this? I get the fruit and veg from Europe, things we can’t produce as easily sure, but meat from Australia? WTF?

Clydesider · 20/06/2021 05:39

To me, it is absolutely crazy to ship food from the other side if the world when what we have here is more than adequate and is farmed to much higher standards. I will most definitely be buying British; local, if possible.

FierceBarrie · 20/06/2021 06:34

Is @Mamaboo22 coming back to the thread?

TomPinch · 21/06/2021 08:33

@Bluethrough

EU farming practices and subsidies undercut Aus/NZ exports and cause trade dumping by the EU here

What gets dumped in Aus/NZ ?

I know the place well, european products aren't widespread, father lives in NZ, partner Aus.

Most recently chips!

i.stuff.co.nz/business/123304562/mbie-investigating-claims-european-frozen-chips-dumped-on-nz

No joke for local producers being forced out of business by heavily subsidised European farmers. The reality down here is that the EU make everyone talk to the hand

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/06/2021 08:41

We eat a lot less meat than we used to, and for years now I’ve only bought U.K. origin/higher welfare. That is not going to change.

I don’t see that there’s necessarily anything wrong with NZ lamb, but I’d rather support our own farmers, even though U.K. lamb is more expensive - and I do often wonder why that is when in so many parts of the U.K. you see fields of sheep everywhere.

TomPinch · 21/06/2021 08:47

There is plenty of EU-produced food here. Mostly smallgoods, e.g. salami, cheeses, pasta and so forth. A lot of pork gets imported here, especially from Spain and (I think) the Netherlands. Cheap olive oil is mostly from Italy and Spain even though Australian is better value (imo). Almost all tinned tomatoes are from Italy.

And there's the UK section, I suspect for the oldies, as it has Frey Bentos pies, HP sauce, something called 'My Mate', Tunnocks Caramels, Pataks pickes and Irn Bru. Smile

Bringmemoonshine · 21/06/2021 08:53

I already do. I won’t buy meat that was not produced in the UK. I usually try to buy directly from farmers who I know produce to high welfare standards.

Bananahana · 21/06/2021 09:18

100% yes. Buy British, in fact we buy uba local from butchers. I know the farm, not quite the name of the lamb.

Mountaingoatling · 21/06/2021 09:47

I'm vegetarian. The government wants to replace family farms with big agritech. If the NZ deal doesn't do it the changes to subsidies and abandonment of welfare practices will. If you're prepared to inflict suffering on animals for a taste sensation then really I'm not sure the niceties over where exactly you draw the line matter.

Bluethrough · 21/06/2021 13:01

What???

The article talks about potential issues that might lead to producers leaving that sector i.e growing something else - not going out of business!
None of this will happen if the regulator steps in, which they are.

Mintjulia · 21/06/2021 13:05

I only buy British meat anyway, and try to only buy British cheese and British-sourced fish. Where I have the choice I buy British fruit & veg, as well as growing my own.

Shipping food to countries that already have their own supply of that product is bad for the animals, the environment, the farmers and usually for the quality of the food.

Lulalu · 21/06/2021 13:06

I will not be buying any meat full stop. Hope the whole industry goes into decline and fast - here and globally.

anon12345678901 · 21/06/2021 13:15

I'll continue to buy my meat from the butcher or the online company I use, happy with the quality from both of those. If they do start selling kangaroo meat I will give it a try though, it's meant to be lovely!

purplesequins · 21/06/2021 13:23

wrt buying british

for a londoner buying summer berries from the netherlands is less foodmiles than getting them from northern england or scotland...
