Neighbours dog

Hi all,

My ndn had a dog that he lets out at various times between 12 -5 am to bark and presumably pee.

This had been going on for months and last night I snapped and said to him "every fucking night this happens"

His response was "we all have issues " I said what does that mean and he said "your child cries"

My DD is 2 - she is good but obviously cries like all kids do...

I don't leave her for hours on end crying and she never wakes up crying at night.

AIBU in thinking most people don't let dogs out at night who bark and wake neighbours up ? I get that the dog might need to pee or whatever and that dogs bark - it's just his lack of consideration- he also slams the door when he opens and closes it.

It'll prob be worse now, we were thinking of moving due to other reasons but I think this has made our decision more urgent.

If you have dogs I'd be particularly interested to know what you think

I have a dog. She goes out in the garden during the day but if she barks, I call her in immediately.

Your neighbour is totally out of order.

RunningFromInsanity · 16/06/2021 19:45

He shouldn’t be letting his dog bark at night but I bet your child disturbs him more than you realise too.

@RunningFromInsanity

I don't doubt it - she sleeps solid 12 hours every night wakes up crying maybe once every 6 months - honestly.

It's the time of day - I do t care if the dog barks during the day but in the middle of the night every night ?

As a dog owner and trainer I can tell you this is absolutely not normal dog behaviour.
With the possible exception of an ill or elderly dog, they are more than capable of holding their bladders overnight. Plus it’s easily possible for a motivated owner to train the dog not to bark.

AdelindSchade · 16/06/2021 19:59

No he's a knob. I'd be mortified if ddog was out barking st night (or any time).

spaceghett0 · 16/06/2021 20:03

He's obviously an idiot and totally in the wrong but his response to you makes me wonder if he's letting his dog bark purposely to get back at you for your DC noise. Have you had other problems with him OP?

How long does this dog bark for?

While I don’t let my dogs out that late at night, my older dog has been known to go out at about 5, and bark to come in, but only once then he is let in. And a couple of weeks ago he had an upset stomach and woke me up every two hours two nights running to go out. But it’s not the norm, and it’s not allowed to continue.

But tbh I do think there’s a difference between a dog which barks once and is then let in, which although the neighbours are going to hear it, the owner has control of it, and a dog which is left outside to bark consistently.

DoubleTweenQueen · 16/06/2021 20:05

I would be mortified if my dog did this. She goes out any time if she needs to (usually sleeps through though), but is quiet as a mouse if she does.
He needs to train and socialise his dog for better behaviour.

DoubleTweenQueen · 16/06/2021 20:07

If your dog is going out at 5am, it should be accompanied and brought back in. It shouldn't be left to bark to be let back in!

Warszawa32 · 16/06/2021 20:13

Yeah I get the situations where dogs are ill or getting older etc and to be honest if they bark once to be let in you can't blame them.

I haven't had any other issues with them, i try hard to be a good neighbour - share plants and food and gardening stuff with other side and buy the kids b day presents a couple of doors down. I take in parcels, helpe out elderly people that lived next door before the loud dog people moved in. It just annoys me, I don't expect silence and I love dogs 🐕 but I know if it was me I'd train them not to do it. I can't be mad at the dog lol I am mad at the human. I don't really want to open a case with the council if we are moving soon as it will cause issues with selling and it's not the main reason for the house sell - you can't ever know what neighbours are like anywhere
