Am I being unreasonable to expect that medical equipment used on women should fit the female body?

Why should we accept incomplete tests during a colonoscopy because the scopes don't fit the female colon? Are there other pieces of medical equipment that don't work properly for women?

Probably. Her book is in my to-read pile.
Cars aren't designed to be safe for women either, the safety features are designed around male bodies.

So much of the world, from safety features on cares right through to how offices are designed, is based on the model of a 50th centile male body. It's almost as if women aren't considered to be as important...

YANBU.

And in answer to:

Are there other pieces of medical equipment that don't work properly for women?

There sure are. This book came recommended to me (not by a MNetter) and it’s an eye opener:

On my colonoscopy, two female nurses offered gas and then said

You will need to have these again
Always ask for pain relief

They went on

If a Man says it's unnecessary and that they managed without , explain to them that women's bodies are different, smaller and with extra pieces like wombs and ovaries, which means the colon bends are much tighter so it's much more painful for women

This shit is everywhere. I have worked for the emergency services for years and there are some pieces of uniform I just have to source myself because an average sized female body cannot be accommodated 🙄.

Spéculums (spécula?) don’t fit all women. The smaller ones are not always available. I have a sibling who was shocked when requesting a paediatric speculum due to a condition was told they are called ‘virgin spéculums/a’ - really astonishing of right.

Actually disposable face masks ! I have a small face and just put a knot on each side, childrens are a bit too small and I haven’t found cloth ones to fit. One size means ‘male’.

khakiandcoral · 16/06/2021 19:22

Not having children equipment for some exams on children is much worse.

Another example from the Invisible Women book is that crash test dummies (used in simulated car crashes to determine the safety rating of a car) are generally based on average male bodies and don't allow for the fact that the average woman is shorter and lighter Angry
