After reading another thread on here, I’m really surprised about how many people have said they hate en-suite bathrooms! It got me thinking… we love our house but the house bathroom is a pokey little cupboard. The previous owners crammed an en-suite into the master bedroom but this means that we have barely any storage space and are left frequently walking into the bed because there’s hardly any space around it. There’s no space for a beside table on my side.

So, is it unreasonable to have one tiny bathroom and a decent sized main bedroom or would you keep the en-suite? There is no downstairs loo although we are thinking of adding one but it wouldn’t be anytime soon.

I'm one of those who hates an en suit. I'd be very keen to redesign that bedroom... but is there any potential to make a proper bathroom elsewhere if the other existing one is so tiny?

DramaAlpaca · 15/06/2021 21:58

I love en-suites and wouldn't buy a house without one. You're right though, lots of people on here hate them. I certainly wouldn't get rid of it if you don't have a downstairs loo.

Walk in wardrobe?

StrawberrySquash · 15/06/2021 22:01

I think they are often a bit pointless, but yours sounds useful

I also think en-suites are grim.

I would definitely take it out!!

HelloBunny · 15/06/2021 22:05

Get rid of it. I had one once, and hated having a toilet in my bedroom...
Another friend has a shower in her bedroom that neither her or her H can fit into.
My uncle has a bathroom, the only one, that has en suite access from the master bedroom. Terrible design!
One big bathroom would be much better...

PotassiumChloride · 15/06/2021 22:05

Unless you’ve got a massive house, I hate them. The only time I’ve ever found them useful was in my younger days when I was sharing flats. Stopped arguments who was cleaning the bathroom or someone hogging it on a morning.

Ozanj · 15/06/2021 22:06

I think it depends on the area. In my old house we converted ensuite to a walk in wardrobe but it was unsellable until we converted it back - simply because people who bought in that area didn’t want storage space in bedrooms. It was so strange to us.

Wanttocry · 15/06/2021 22:06

I don’t hate en suites as a rule. But I don’t like them when they’re squeezed into a space too small, and take away space from the bedroom that is needed for storage.

How many bedrooms is the house in total?

Bluntness100 · 15/06/2021 22:08

How many bedrooms do you have?

If it’s just one bedroom I think fine but if it’s a three bed house I think I’d keep it till I can put a downstairs loo in.

HotChocolateLover · 15/06/2021 22:11

Could you fit a downstairs loo under the stairs? For me, if I was able to do that then I’d definitely get rid of the en-suite because it sounds as though the bedroom isn’t big enough for one.

NorthernNic · 15/06/2021 22:11

We took ours out (DIY job from previous owners) and haven't regretted it. 4 of us with smallish bathroom, one bath and shower although we do have a downstairs toilet. Do what suits you.

I think for a three bed house I’d keep it till you can put in a downstairs one op. Unless there’s only two of you living there?

StarryStarrySocks · 15/06/2021 22:14

I would rather have more space in the bedroom than an en-suite.

Winterwoollies · 15/06/2021 22:15

What have I missed? What’s grim about an en-suite? Surely it’s more grim for an entire household to be sharing one bathroom? Confused

StayOrGoOrWhat · 15/06/2021 22:15

There’s DH and me in our room and a child in each bedroom. 4 of us altogether.

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 15/06/2021 22:16

I’d keep it then op, one loo can be difficult. Whe someone’s in the bath or shower ans someone else needs. It’s better to have two.

lalafafa · 15/06/2021 22:18

why are they grim?its the same as having a bedroom next to a bathroom.
allofthecheese · 15/06/2021 22:18

I love ours but that's probably because it's a good size and doesn't take away from space/storage in our room. If the family bathroom is tiny then I'd leave it in.

StoneofDestiny · 15/06/2021 22:20

I'd not live in a house without an en suite anymore, but my house is big and there is plenty of room for them, with windows etc. I'd not want one squashed in where it's taking valuable space .

It really depends how many are living in your house and how often you have visitors. If it's just the two of you, you might be ok.

BackforGood · 15/06/2021 22:20

I'm not a fan of ensuites, but I would keep it over only having one bathroom and no downstairs toilet.

RoseMartha · 15/06/2021 22:21

Well the extra loo must be useful. I would be inclined to keep the loo and sink and make the shower area into a cupboard for storage. If you moved the new owners could always put a shower back in.

Bluntness100 · 15/06/2021 22:22

I also don’t understand why they are grim either.

I’d much prefer a cramped one than Four folks sharing one loo.
