Feel unstylish and have no idea what suits me hair and make up wise

Onewayoranother88 · 15/06/2021 10:25

Does anyone else feel like they don't have a clue how to dress and what make up to wear?
I'm 30, just under 5'7 and I'm 9 and a half stone. I'm a healthy weight and slim, though not as toned as I'd like to be.
I've got a bit of a flabby stomach and I feel like I don't have the legs to wear short skirts/ shorts anymore unless it's with heels. Im slightly pear shaped I think, and have a D/DD bust.
I have no idea at all what clothes suit me.
I tend to always wear skinny jeans and like fitted clothes. I was in a 'hipster' part of the city I live in yesterday and all the girls/women just look so trendy, they seem to know exactly what clothes suit them and all seem to be very lithe and beautiful.
I feel very untrendy and no idea what flatters me.
I've also started to get Botox and fillers as I love the effect they give. I know it's really sad, but it makes me feel better.
Maybe I have a touch of BDD, has anybody else felt like this? Should I see a stylist?

Also cannot do my make up. Don't usually wear any, fortunately have good skin but no idea how to apply anything.

I am so not the person to give you advice but I couldn't help replying. I obviously don't know you but I bet this us more down to your confidence than anything else. You are the youngest you will ever be and you sound like you have a lovely figure. I am 20+ years older than you and 2 stone heavier and really struggle. You could literally wear whatever you wanted. If you want to get out of your skinny jeans then how about dresses. Mini ditsy print with box fresh trainers or chunky sandals are all in. Clean hair, a light fake tan, a bit of make up a lovely lip gloss a big smile you will feel loads better. There is loads of lovely fashion around, order a big haul from Shein or Asos and have a try on.

Onewayoranother88 · 15/06/2021 12:00

Thanks a lot for the suggestions I'll have a look.
I think it's confidence yes, I just seem to be comparing myself to these girls I see out and about and I don't know why. They just all seem to look like models and yesterday I was wearing a long fitted dress that made my legs look short and dumpy, my stomach look bigger, i had an Alice band that looked like it was from 2005 and my face looked orange as I have no idea what make up suits me.
I used to be 8 stone or just over, looking back it was underweight for my height but I never got this dumpy feeling, i need to accept I'm not that thin now.

Do you do much exercise? Not with the objective of changing your size or shape but because I think we feel more at home in our bodies when we are physically active on a regular basis. Doesn't have to be jumping around.

Imtoooldforallthis · 15/06/2021 12:14

So definately try a midi dress rather than long, if your hairs long enough try a hair claw, but look for a square gold one rather than a plastic one. Get some new sunglasses if you don't have any. I've got a couple of pairs of these in different colours.

As for make up, this is nice, just buff it in well and add a light dusting of powder

Onewayoranother88 · 15/06/2021 12:33

Thank you for those suggestions.
I do exercise quite a lot and my job is very active.
I think I need to stop dressing as if I have very long slim legs and just accept my body for how it is.

I love a good midi dress, they make me feel very stylish and I like white tennis/converse type shoes for dressed down and something with a bit of a heel for dressed up.
I was the exact same as you for makeup so a few years ago I asked one of my friends who really knows their stuff to teach me. And she did. I apply my foundation with a brush, and put powder over the top and I love a bit of highlighter. YouTube is a really good resource for makeup tutorials too.
As for hair, I'm crap. I have naturally thick, wavy hair and I've started conditioning my hair for a longer time in the shower so it's not frizzy and I can just have my hair down naturally instead of battling it out with straighteners.

LittleGwyneth · 15/06/2021 12:39

I think it sounds like this is more about your mental health than you actual clothes. But if you want an easy win, go on asos and buy a couple of pretty floral or gingham mini or midi dresses, ideally shirred which makes them super flattering, and wear them with white trainers and a denim jacket. As someone else pointed out, fake tan is a massive win, and a bit of tinted moisturiser with some mascara and a nice pink-brown lip colour is all the make-up you need to look polished. You can use the lip colour as a blush as well.

adviceseekingnamechanger · 15/06/2021 12:40

Can I recommend going to a make up counter? Somewhere like Bobbi Brown and they teach how to do really nice natural make up (when I last did it was free!) Or Mac if you want something more dramatic (they charge something like £25 or you buy £25 worth of make up they've taught you to use, something like that). I didn't have a clue and it taught me really well ( I did it for my wedding day)

ShowMeTheSugar · 15/06/2021 12:41

Based on the height and weight given I'd say you do have long, slim legs!

What about mom or cropped boyfriend jeans? Do you prefer skirts and dresses? How much time do you want to spend getting ready in the morning?

What kind of style do you like? More polished, casual or sporty?

If you tell us a little of what you like its easier to suggest things you might like.

DappledThings · 15/06/2021 12:47

I'm 42 and never really learnt how to do make-up so I don't bother. I'm pretty sure I look better without it than I would with it badly done.

Onewayoranother88 · 15/06/2021 12:50

Thanks for all the replies.
I think as well because my boyfriend has a new colleague who's 22, incredibly lithe and beautiful, looks like a doll and clearly very natural. I know he loves me a lot and I think I just need the confidence to accept I'm probably not as beautiful or slim as that but it shouldn't matter.
I work nights and wear a uniform for that so it's for my days off really.
I'm quite into the preppy style I guess, I am not into anything too floaty or frilly, citric colours or anything like that.
Somebody like Alexa Chung I like the way she dresses, or Kate Moss.
I wouldn't say I'm polished, I don't even paint my nails or anything.
I have a small waist so i think I would benefit from longer skirts but things that are fitted at the waist.
I don't know if it's the wrong bra but if I wear a tight t shirt my breasts bounce about all over the place when I'm walking which makes me self conscious.
I do seem to have a long body and shorter legs, I've friends of the same height who have much longer legs it seems.
I will definitely go to a make up counter this week if I can, and gonna check out ASOS this afternoon.
My boyfriend is great and tells me I'm perfect as I am and that I don't need a single thing doing.
I've had Botox around my eyes, filler on my nose as it used to be quite un straight and gave me a prominent side profile.
Have booked for lip fillers next week as i feel my lips are fairly thin.
I know it's just vanity and a waste of time, I wish I didn't get any of it really but it makes me feel better about myself.

If it helps my hair is in a short bob and I'm growing out the fringe. It's naturally dark brown, have a few grey hairs but I don't dye my hair anymore which is an improvement I guess.
Do have a lot of thick hair which is good, don't really do much with it other than let it dry naturally and scrape it back with a headband.

OP posts:
Imtoooldforallthis · 15/06/2021 13:04

I'm sure this is a generation thing but go lightly on the aesthetics you have a lot of life yet to live and it may be that you woukd never be happy with the results. What is the aim with growing out your fringe.? Do you ever straighten your hair, if you straighten your fringe to one side you could ditch the hairband occasionally.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 15/06/2021 13:09

Bare minerals tinted moisturiser is great as a foundation… it gives a really naturally glowy “no make up” look

WaltzForDebbie · 15/06/2021 13:09

Have you tried to get fitted at Bravissimo. It sounds like a good bra would help? I enjoyed going to France couple of years ago and seeing how most of the women dress. They dress really simply with minimal makeup and look really chic. You don't have to be mega on trend to look great. Concentrate on good skin care and a few simple styles that work for you. It's so hard at the moment when we can't try clothes on!!

Hereforthedramaz · 15/06/2021 13:17

I feel the same, I would love full tv style makeover where people really tell me what suits me; clothes, makeup and hair wise, but proper stylists are insanely expensive!

There are quite a few free resources you could use:

theconceptwardrobe.com

This is an interesting read and helps guide you though what works for you. And once you've established things like your body shape, colouring etc then places like Pinterest have thousands of guides and inspiration to try.

Also make use of places like John Lewis and others where they offer free personal shopping. My experiences have been brilliant and I've learnt more about what works for me as well as trying new things. And they have never been pushy about buying things.

Similarly with make up, book in with some brands you like for free trials and see what you like.

Onewayoranother88 · 15/06/2021 13:18

I will go for a fitting this week if I can.
My skincare regime is decent and i don't drink or smoke, I wear suncream and so I have fairly skin. I only really wear make up when I go out, I tend to do a heavy black eyeliner, the same shade of blusher, very bad contour and the same lip colour with bad lip liner.
I will definitely make some appointments and get things sorted if I can , I think it eikl help my confidence a lot. Thanks again to all who replied.

Imtoooldforallthis · 15/06/2021 13:22

I would have a play with your make up, buy a grey or brown eyeliner, ditch the contouring. Make sure you have beautifully groomed eyebrows. Try a little bronzer.

Onewayoranother88 · 15/06/2021 14:01

I've had a fitting today and they've said I'm a 34DD whichch is the size I'm wearing. Maybe I just need better quality bras instead of Primark lol.
Got a belt which I really needed too.
Make up is the next step, will get to a counter this week.
Had a good look at myself in the M and S changing room and realised I do have a good figure, the mirror we have at home isn't the best, my legs are slim and I can make them look longer with the right style. Hopefully I'll gain confidence.

There's plenty of fashion vloggers on YouTube for inspiration, I'm enjoying watching model mouth for ideas.

I am shorter than you but have the same kind of figure with shorter legs and a longer body. Have you tried paper bag trousers. They show off a narrow waist but skim over hips and thighs. I wear mine with a fitted T-shirt and short blazer.
They suit me better than mom or boyfriend jeans which just make me look too dumpy. I love my skinnies and am sad they are less on trend these days
