To be fuming at holiday home owner?

namechange0178 · 14/06/2021 23:15

We booked a week away (in England) for August ages ago. In autumn last year. We're a large family group so limited options. Last week I get a cancellation note, with a big story from the owner that her family member has long covid and they are closing their business so that he and his carers can live there. Lo and behold, as I'm browsing every day in the hope that something else becomes available so that we don't lose our holiday completely, the house has popped up again for our dates at a much inflated rate.

Why lie? If you're going to be a greedy snake, at least give us the option to pay more to keep our holiday. As it is, there is literally nothing else available for us.

OP posts:
fedup078 · 16/06/2021 22:32

A few years ago my dad had to leave his rented accommodation because the owner said he wanted to move back in
A few weeks later the house is back on the rental market after a lick of paint at double the rent he’d been paying
Do they really think people won’t find out, so sneaky

TidyOmlette · 16/06/2021 23:07

I would email them and ask for an explanation. Then I would name and shame them.

NigellaAwesome · 16/06/2021 23:27

Awful, deceitful behaviour.

We have just started out as holiday home providers, and wouldn't dream of doing this.

Do you have legal protection on your home insurance? I would be threatening legal action for breach of contract, taking it if necessary, and reviewing wherever you can. and naming and shaming on here

Blacksheepcat · 17/06/2021 00:01

1.Tell them you know what they’ve done and you’d like them to honour your original booking

  1. Get nowhere?
3.Leave reviews on trip advisor and every other review site/social media sites you can .
memberofthewedding · 17/06/2021 00:31

You can understand hospitality venues wanting to make up for a shit year last year and putting up prices. However they should honour the bookings they already have at the agreed rate.

You may not be able to leave a bad revue on the site where you booked but there are many other platforms where you could leave a stinking review.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 17/06/2021 01:41

@Crazycatlady83

Very few people seem to have failed to understand that there would be consequences to closing the economy for 1+ year. Domestic holiday prices will rise this year, foreign holiday next year. Restaurant prices and taxes. I feel sorry for business owners - people screaming for their businesses to close (and in some cases they still remain closed), not making a penny for a year and then people calling them "disgusting" and "greedy" for trying to claw back some of their losses.

It's a inconvenience for you, but we don't know the holiday owners circumstances. They might be on the edge financially and need to make more money to keep their heads above water.

We should have a little sympathy for other people's circumstances

I have no sympathy for dishonest, money grubbing twats who don't deserve to be in business.
HarebrightCedarmoon · 17/06/2021 01:45

@Penistoe

Threaten reviews/complaining to the website you booked through etc

Threatening bad reviews is bribery and illegals

No it bloody isn't. You are entitled to leave a negative review if it is truthful, and telling them you are going to do just that is honesty! Nothing illegal there.
HomeSliceKnowsBest · 17/06/2021 05:01

Cunts OP. Though cunts in my experience very often reap what they sow. Flowers

Bluehues · 17/06/2021 06:42

We own a holiday cottage & it has been tight over COVID but I don’t think it’s down to holidaymakers to foot that bill, no price change here. Instead of leaving negative reviews, maybe give glowing ones to the hosts not acting like pricks.

Lulu1919 · 17/06/2021 06:56

That's terrible .....surely it's not allowed ???
I'd make a fuss ....not sure how ..but it's making me feel angry on your behalf !!!!!!!

frumpety · 17/06/2021 07:16

Is it still available ? sounds as though the government is going to let people travel to amber list countries without the need to quarantine on return quite soon, they might not get a booking after all.

LovelyIssues · 17/06/2021 08:39

That is awful!! Sorry that happened OP. I agree, post a review with screenshots

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/06/2021 08:53

Agree about holiday scams. We once had a couple from abroad turn up at our offices in central London thinking they’d booked them as holiday accommodation.

dustyparadeground · 17/06/2021 09:50

Had you paid OP?

thenewduchessofhastings · 17/06/2021 10:20

Lots of places have gotten greedy.

We normally stay in a premier inn in Portsmouth the night before we catch the ferry.

Two family rooms usually cost around £100;this year those two family rooms in the particular hotel has gone up to around £350;the price hikes are ridiculous.

caringcarer · 17/06/2021 11:29

You are correct it is disgusting behaviour. They should honour any pre existing bookings even if they put up prices for new bookings. My dh works with a woman who has had similar for her wedding. Originally booked almost 2 years ago at smart country house for 120 guests. When Covid came venue refused her a refund but offered an alternative date. She put it back 12 months thinking Covid would be over by then. Second date postponed too also due to Covid restrictions, she has set date for May 2022. A few weeks ago she got a letter from wedding venue stating she would have to pay over £4k more for exactly the same wedding or have refund. She says she can't afford over 4k more and so had to accept the refund. Now everywhere else is booked. If she had been given refund at the time she would have put it in stocks and shares ISA and so held value of money.

threatmatrix · 17/06/2021 11:36

Name and shame so we can all leave a review.

Tusue · 17/06/2021 12:01

I would call them out ,tell them you’ve seen it at a bigger price and ask they honour your booking, if not ,leave an honest review (obvs stinking) telling everyone what a bunch of con men they are 👿

QuimKardashian · 17/06/2021 19:20

@namechange0178

Put it on here so we can boycott it Grin

PeachyPeachTrees · 17/06/2021 19:44

Loads of places are doing it. To lie with a covid sob story is lower than low.

Barmychick · 19/06/2021 11:34

Karma

vivainsomnia · 19/06/2021 11:37

We should have a little sympathy for other people's circumstances
Well, that goes both ways. How do they know what OPs circumstances are and that maybe, they too have struggled badly, that maybe it's parents paying to give them the desperate holiday they deserves.

Only selfish people justify their being selfish.

Covidconfuse · 20/06/2021 06:10

I would love to know what happened in the end, OP.
Did you call them out? Did you take legal action? Did you leave reviews everywhere and if so how did they react? And did you find somewhere else to holiday?

Notusuallydown · 30/06/2021 19:19

What's up OP?
