Should I tell my manager?

I have recently returned to work after an illness, I was diagnosed and treated for cancer last year. A recent scan has shown some concern and I am now waiting for an appointment with a consultant.
I feeling very anxious and work is stressful at the moment. I haven't told anyone at work about what's going on, I don't know if I should tell my manager or if I should wait until my appointment next month.

YABU - speak to my manager
YANBU - keep it to myself until I know more

You must be very worried about this. It depends on the relationship you have with your manager. If it's good and s/he is generally supportive I'd say it's worth telling them. If they're not, maybe try and keep it to yourself until you know more. As someone who employs people I'd appreciate my staff telling me something like this so I can support them in any way I can do I'm not inadvertently causing them any unnecessary additional stress at a horrible time. Good luck xx

Sorry you're going through this, I hope you get good news next month. In the meantime, if your manager is a reasonable person, definitely tell them. That way they can support you

You should definitely tell your manager. I’m a manager and I’ve had a few occasions where I’ve had staff in a similar position. In a couple of cases they didn’t tell me and the stress impacted on their work (making silly mistakes or being short tempered etc). They had no idea the stress was affecting them so badly. In both cases I had a chat with them about work and they then revealed the reason. Fortunately I’d asked if things were ok rather than telling them off. If I’d known in advance I could have taken some pressure off them and made allowances.

If your manager doesn’t know they may add rather than remove stress.

Do whatever makes you feel better. I'd tell them but there isn't a wrong choice here.

I don't really have a great relationship with her, she started whilst I was off sick and I have only been back 6 weeks so haven't worked much with her.
